A promising method for fungal disease control in storage is the use of essential oils. Three different methods of wild oregano essential oil application were tested: incorporation (5% dilution), exposing to the vapor phase (0.08 and 0.16 µl/cm3), and fruit immersion in 5% dilution. Incorporation of essential oil showed the strongest inhibitory effect on Monilinia laxa in both tested cultivars (Regina and Karina). The vapor phase had the same effect on inhibition of Monilinia laxa at both concentrations on cold-stored fruits of cv. Regina after incubation at room temperature, while on cv. Karina, higher concentration showed a stronger inhibitory effect. The immersion in EO dilution caused phytotoxic changes on the fruit skin. Necrosis development rates significantly increased after the cold storage period terminated.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42778776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatments included four rates of PRE emergence application of S-metolachlor + fluchloridon and one POST emergence application of flumioxazin + quizalofop-pethyl. PRE-em application (1.4 + 2.4 and 1.2 + 2.0) provided at the higher crop densities (70 000) best weed control. However, PRE- em treatments with lower doses (0.8 + 1.6 and 1.0 + 1.8) and POST- em application did not maintain acceptable control of dominant weeds. Grain yield increased with the crop density, but did not statistically differ between applied herbicide treatments. Finally, the implication of this study demonstrated that sole application of tested herbicide treatments at higher crop sowing density (60 000 and 70 000) was found to be economically the best alternative strategy for reducing weed infestation and achieving a better yield.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44185216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program implied estrus synchronization of non-pregnant cows with either prostaglandin or GnRH followed by prostaglandin after 7 days, then GnRH 2 days later and AI during the following day. Cows included in the estrus synchronization program recorded an improvement of the pregnancy rate at 130 days in milk compared to those in which this strategy was not applied (56.7% vs. 37.5%; P<0.05). The economic analysis revealed a difference in the net present value (NPV; $/cow/year) of $10.1/cow/year between the two programs (rebreeding the non-pregnant cows following estrus synchronization program and AI at detected estrus vs. AI at detected estrus). In summary, rebreeding the non-pregnant dairy cows after early negative pregnancy diagnosis (25 days after AI) using estrus synchronization program can improve the pregnancy rate and economic value of dairy farms.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46701717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Milk fat (MF) of buffalo’s milk was partially or fully (0.0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) replaced by modified starch for making single cream cheese (SCC) or double cream cheese (DCC) aiming to produce low-calorie CC. The cheese samples were analyzed when fresh and after ten days of cold storage. Moisture gradually increased with increasing percentage of replacement and decreased with storage. Replacement of MF decreased protein and increased carbohydrate contents in general, while acidity increased gradually and pH decreased with increasing percentage of replacement and with storage. Energy content was significantly decreased by more replacement of MF and increased by advancing storage. Spreadability of DCC showed the same trend of energy results. Replacement of MF up to 50% improved the organoleptic properties while the full replacement adversely affected the organoleptic properties of CC.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41884074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little research has been conducted concerning the detection of AFB1 on meat. The aim of this study was to modify the method for AFB1 determination by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection in dry aged meats. The aged meat samples used for determination of AFB1 were obtained from a commercial dry aged meat plants and produced for 28 days in a meat plant chiller. All meat samples were analyzed according to the modified method. The samples were cleaned to remove impurities by using a immunoaffinity column. Photochemical reactor was used for the recording and evaluation of the chromatograms. The analytical performance parameters showed that the method was specific for AFB1 detection in the meat samples. Recovery rate, reproducibility (RSDr%) and repeatability (RSDR%) were found to be 85.889%, 3.822% and 6.601%, respectively. Limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.15 ng/mL and 0.501 ng/mL, respectively. AFB1 was not detected in the meat samples. Our results indicated that the method modified for monitoring AFB1 level in the meats was simple, time-saving and reliable.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49349691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main forages in Vojvodina, north province of Serbia is silage made from the whole plant of corn. After the outbreak of aflatoxin B1 in corn in 2012, the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in corn as a source of contamination of aflatoxin M1 in milk was very broadly investigated. There is no data regarding the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in silage and how much silage can contribute to the overall intake of aflatoxin B1 in this region. This work is an attempt to estimate how much silage, in condition and practice used in Vojvodina, contributes to the intake of aflatoxin B1, and consequently aflatoxin M1 in milk. In total, 82 samples of corn grain and 72 samples of corn silage were analyzed on the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 during 2017-2018 period. Aflatoxin B1 was found in 13.41% of corn samples in the range from 6.82 to 187.5 ppb (average 63.5 ppb). All positive samples were from 2017, while no positive samples were found during 2018. Incidence of aflatoxin B1 in silage was 54.17% in the range of 3.5-58.0 ppb (12% moisture content) or 0.95-16.1 ppb in the fresh matter. Results suggest that silage can be a significant factor to overall intake of aflatoxin B1 and that further research is needed.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48366852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The crude extract from the leaves of Indigofera apalathoides aids in the bioreduction of silver nitrate into silver ions which results in the formation of colloidal silver nanoparticles. Critical physio-chemical parameters such as temperature, pH, substrate ratio (ratio of leaf extract and silver nitrate solution) and incubation time were optimized to increase the yield and efficiency of the nanoparticle formation. Synthesized nanoparticles were then characterized by performing a set of spectral analyses such as UV, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDAX and AFM, later its bioactivity was also assessed. Characteristic UV-Vis absorption peak (λmax) at the range of 360-390 nm indicated silver nanoparticle formation and XRD pattern revealed the crystalline nature, while the average grain size was estimated to be 68.5 nm using Scherrer’s formula. SEM image clearly depicted the square shaped silver nanoparticles, which were synthesized using Indigofera aspalathoides leaf extract. Confirmation of formation of silver nanoparticles were carried out using EDAX spectrum. IC 50 value of free radical scavenging occurred at a lower concentration of 300 µg/ml, while a maximum inhibition zone of 13 mm was recorded against pathogenic bacterial strains and 6.7 mm was recorded against pathogenic fungal strains. Further, the silver nanoparticle cytotoxicity analysis was also carried out using MCF 7 cell line and IC 50 was found out to be 5.9 µg/ml. Silver nanoparticles which are green synthesized using the aqueous extract of Indigofera aspalathoides proved as an effective broad-spectrum antibiotic as well as an efficient antioxidant and an anti-cancerous agent.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2606-2617"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48890323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
