Allelopathy can be considered as a component of biological control that reduces the development of other plants. This study was carried out to determine the effect of Greek sage (Salvia fruticosa Miller), basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), Dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.), spearmint (Menta spicata L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), oregano (Origanum onites L.) and thyme (Thymus kotschyanus Boiss.) on the germination of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) which causes significant yield loss in agricultural production. Essential oil (9, 18, 36 μL/petri) and hydrosols (50, 75, 100%) of aromatic plants were applied to determine their inhibition effects on seed germination of A. retroflexus. The experimental design for in vitro was a randomized design with five replications. It has been shown that germination rate was decreasing by the increased concentration of essential oil and hydrosols of the tested plant species. Also, total germination inhibition of A. retroflexus depended on the essential oil doses; the rate ranged from-2.9 to 85%. Amongst the essential oils, the highest effect was observed in spearmint with 7% germination rate. It could be considered as an important solution, which would contribute in Integrated Weed Management of A. retroflexus by using different concentrations of essential oil and hydrosols from aromatic plants.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2471-2475"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43841582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contagious ecthyma is a disease with economic and animal welfare implications, rarely being fatal if the host organism suffers from immunosuppression or if secondary infections occur. Similar to other members of the Poxviridae family, immunity to contagious ecthyma is mediated by both innate and adaptive immune responses. Following the invasion of the contagious ecthyma virus, immunoglobulins are mobilized that specifically bind to the contagious ecthyma virus to form immune complexes, which are then eliminated by defense system to protect tissues from damage. The level of circulating immune complexes and immunoglobulins can be quantified and can be an indicator of the stage of infection. In the present study we aimed to investigate whether there is a link between the individual characteristics (sex, age, severity of clinical signs) of sheep with orf symptoms and the evolution of circulating immune complexes and total immunoglobulins. In addition to these investigations, we aimed to follow the evolution of these immunological parameters compared to the evolution in clinically healthy animals. Investigations of the serum revealed that levels of these two parameters (total Ig and CIC), can be influenced by the individual characteristics of sheep affected by the contagious ectima and shows differences compared to clinically healthy animals.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2361-2369"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46000425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Paraoxonase and myeloperoxidase activities are considered sensitive biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, being also predictors for coronary artery disease. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of chronic nandrolone administration on paraoxonase and myeloperoxidase activities in Wistar rats. 16 Wistar rats were divided into two groups (n=8 for each of them): nandrolone decanoate (A) treated group and control group (C). After 12 weeks of nandrolone decanoate administration we analyzed several plasma oxidative stress parameters: TROLOX Equivalent Antioxidant Activity, paraoxonase and myeloperoxidase activities, total thiols, and advanced oxidation protein products. Our results showed a significant decreased total antioxidant activity in nandrolone treated group compared with controls, while paraoxonase activity and total thiols levels were significantly increased. Myeloperoxidase activity and advanced oxidation protein products were not significantly different between the two studied groups. In conclusion decreased plasma total antioxidant activity suggested increased oxidative stress induced by chronic high doses of nandrolone. Despite oxidative stress presence high doses of nandrolone induced also increased plasma paraoxonase activity.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2483-2488"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42901323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Romania in the case of tomato culture it is very low due to several production constrains including diseases. One such disease is the early blight caused by fungus Alternaria solani (Ell.) Martin. The isolate used in this study was obtained from tomato and it was cultivated on three culture media: potato dextrose agar (PDA), malt extract agar and Czapek Dox medium. Using chlorothalonil, thiophanate methyl, prochloraz, tebuconazole and cooper sulphate, they were evaluated in order to control colony growth of fungi, at the concentrations recommended in agriculture by the specialized literature. The extract of Allium concentration with three levels (3%, 75% and 100%) significantly stronger effect on reducing mycelia growth, reducing spore germination and causing high inhibition percentage of A. solani. To evaluate the rate of positive thrombophilia tests in our laboratory we analyzed the carrier status for common thrombophilia-related gene variants in a consecutive unselected cohort of 360 Romanian patients. Genetic tests were performed on a Real-Time PCR platform. Majority of patients (98.6%) carried at least one thrombophilic variant. The carrier frequencies for classical prothrombotic mutations in F5 (Factor V Leiden) and F2 genes (prothrombin G20210A mutation) were 11.67% (10.27% heterozygous, 1.4% homozygous) and 6.95% (6.39% heterozygous, 0.56% homozygous), respectively. Concurrently, high carrier frequencies for MTHFR c.677C>T, MTHFR c.1298A>C, and PAI-1 4G/5G variants, that are controversially associated with thrombophilia, were observed: 65.28% (52.5% heterozygous, 12.78% homozygous), 53.61% (45% heterozygous, 8.61% homozygous), and 78.61% (49.44% heterozygous, 29.17% homozygous), respectively. The impact of MTHFR genotypes on plasma homocysteine levels was also determined. Male carriers of TT homozygous genotype and CT heterozygous genotype of MTHFR C677T polymorphism had significantly higher levels of plasma homocysteine unrelated to age, compared to those harboring CC homozygous genotype (P=0.028). In unselected patients a high rate of positive thrombophilia tests was observed and the clinical implications of such results need to be carefully examined.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2275-2282"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69219884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) genome was discovered, nucleic acid amplification techniques were developed with more rapid detection and identification of rifampicin resistance in respiratory and extra-pulmonary specimens. GeneXpert is a DNA-polymerase chain reaction technique based on NAA, which allows an accurate genotypic method for a quick diagnosis of PTB diagnosis. The aim of the study was to assess retrospectively the yield of genotypic assay GeneXpert in revealing multidrug resistant TB compare to phenotypic confirmation by solid culture. 512 patients with positive and negative smears of suspected PTB were investigated by conventional phenotypic assays. PTB diagnosis assessed by positive genotypic assay and confirmed by phenotypic conventional solid culture method was 78.12%. The yield of GeneXpert in revealing rifampicin resistance was high (n=79/512; 15.43%) with 12.5% additional resistance against isoniazid revealed by positive solid cultures and drug susceptibility test. The results obtained by phytochemical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of some pharmacologically active chemical compounds such as: alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and tannins. Quantitative analysis showed that the seeds had phenols in greater amounts (157.88 ± 2.09 mg GAE / g dry matter) than dried fruit pulp (54.09 ± 2.24 mg GAE / g dry matter). Contrariwise, flavonoid content was found to be low in seed (0.013 ± 0.02 mg EQ / g) and high in fruit pulp (0.13 ± 0.05 mg EQ / g). Correlated with the high amount of total phenol, in the seed extracts was found a good antioxidant activity – measured by both DPPH and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. This antioxidant capacity may be also correlated with the amount of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds, and as well as with their synergistic interactions. Synsepalum dulcificum fruits can be used as a healthy source of additives for the food industry or as natural antioxidants for the pharmaceutical industry.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":"2230-2235"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69220091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After clinical estimation of lesion activity, a fine sample of deep dentin layer was removed and inoculated on bacteria tests. Salivary cortisol was assessed using an ELISA method. Most molars were diagnosed as actively carious progressing. There was a gradual increase in the bacterial counts, with higher lactobacilli (p=0.001) and mutans streptococci (p=0.045) loads in deep carious lesions, without any salivary cortisol level association. The findings of the present study discriminate between different clinical characteristics of carious lesions, supporting a conservative cavity preparation approach.","PeriodicalId":21566,"journal":{"name":"Romanian Biotechnological Letters","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69221001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
