Porter’s eponymous Pollyanna with her famous glad game has undoubtedly become a phenomenon denoting an attitude and perspective rather than simply being a literary character. Pollyanna is a prototype of well-behaved, modest, and content children in children’s literature, and she embodies not only an adult nostalgia for the naivety and pure goodness of childhood but also the merry and kind child that is wished for. Pollyanna has, in time, transformed into a cultural icon which has found different names in literatures of different cultures. Porter’s novel’s far-reaching influence can also be seen in Turkish children’s literature and screen adaptations through child protagonists that voice ideas surrounding Pollyanna. This can be related to the development of Turkish children’s literature that has occurred on the same axis with children’s literature in Western countries. Modern Turkish children’s literature started with the translations and adaptations of classics in Tanzimat Era (1839-1876) and this tradition continued almost until the mid 20th century. Therefore, Anglophone as well as French children’s classics became a model for modern Turkish children’s literature where the writers adopted and adapted outstanding themes, motifs and characters for Turkish child readers. This paper explores the intersections of Anglophone and Turkish children’s literature by tracing the influence of Pollyanna in Turkish children’s literature through the analyses of selected texts.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116817279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radicant, which is defined as “taking root” (radication), also includes change, development and progress. Roots in the radicant are formed afterwards, not at the beginning because the radicant is something that progresses, develops and takes root by making a transposition between different situations and even between different languages, thoughts and cultures. In the nature of radicant, there is always progress, development and radication. The radicant also shows itself in interlingual translation, which is itself characterized by progression, transposition and development. Taking into consideration the radicant character of interlingual translation, we can say that translation theory can also show a radicant quality if we look at it from the perspective of translation studies. The Polysystem Theory, one of the most important theories in translation studies, is a theory that focuses on literary translation. The transmission of an original text written in a source language for a specific culture to the target culture through a target language also determines its position in the target culture because the translated text can occupy a central position in the target culture and become more popular and contribute to its literature. It can even shape the literature of the target culture by influencing it. Thus, it can provide the emergence of new literary genres in the target culture or make them more popular. In other words, the source text, turning into a target text, takes root in another language and culture and continues its development. The objective of this theoretical study is to show that the Polysystem Theory is a radicant translation theory by approaching the theory from the perspective of the concept of radicant in a different way.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133231588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These poets are three well-known poets who have made a great contribution to the development and progress of the genre of eulogy-themed poetry in the period of Jahiliyyah. They have influenced the poets interested in the poetry of the Classical Arabic Literature and even the ones writing poems on the neo-classical movement having occurred at the beginning of the Arabic Literature. Three of the poets earned income by versifying poems based on eulogy-themed poems, and they prepared the ground for the eulogy being praised by other poets and becoming widespread. They have chosen the ones living and having the authority of the government in the Jahiliyyah Period as the praised. Among these three poets, only el-‘Aşâ despite being nonmuslim he has versified eulogy for the prophet Muhammed (pbuh) because of being one of the poets having seen both the Jahiliyyah and Islamic Periods. The common features of the three poets’ eulogies are that their styles are extremely simple and fluent.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126320738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of fantasy elements to deal with issues related to today's society also leads to a significant increase in the readership of this genre. Terry Pratchett, who is the writer of the Discworld series consisting of 41 novels, blends fantasy and satire skillfully in his novels. As the novel’s title gives some indication, Equal Rites, which was first published in 1987, is about equal rights in terms of gender. Talking about witches, magic, wizards and the Unseen University where women are not allowed to enter as a student or teacher, Pratchett combines the fantasy with serious topics about gender inequality. The story is set in Pratchett’s fantasy world -Discworld and the writer uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own. In this paper, how Pratchett deals with some serious gender-related issues such as male dominance in institutions, women’s struggles against the sexist point of view and stereotyped roles of men and women in his fantasy world are analysed via quotations from the novel. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the writer satirizes society by using elements of fantasy for all the inequalities that women face in different areas of life and offer various solutions to those inequalities.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116526589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, it discusses the potential of the sense of place to invoke certain environmental values through which the readers could appreciate the interdependent relationship between human beings and their natural surroundings. To this end, it first discusses how Austen’s “environmental imagination” (to use Lawrence Buell’s term) works through Emma to draw a parallelism between the environment in which she grew up as a child, that is, Steventon, and her fictional environment that she created for this specific novel, Highbury. The reflections of her environmental imagination are particularly worth revisiting in line of the environmental ethics philosopher Jim Cheney’s idea of the parallelism between “landscapes and mindscapes” and Holmes Rolston III’s “storied residences”. These two theorists similarly suggest that landscapes are directly or indirectly reflected through mindscapes, and narrative is the most convenient mode to contextualize this parallelism. Building on these theoretical insights, this article displays how Austen is a keen observer of her natural surroundings but also argues that there is a place-based approach in her characters that potentially offer an environmental consciousness for the reader in Emma, explored within the special light of the ecocritical understanding of place.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125177359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nafisi complains that most readers avoid reading dangerously in order not to break their “comfort zone”. This, however, causes atrophy to their senses and makes them passive and indifferent to the problems of today’s world. To Nafisi, such readers don’t believe that “sky is falling till a chunk of it falls on [them]” (92). Ordinariness is what such readers suffer from. Nafisi further claims that ordinariness is the most fearsome state since ordinary people even normalize the violent deeds of totalitarian regimes. They take them for granted without questioning or raising doubts about them. They become docile bodies in the society easily conditioned to move into the predetermined spaces created by the authorities. Realizing the potential threat of routine to individual liberty in the growing totalitarianism, Nafisi urgently suggests the necessity of reading dangerously that would raise higher consciousness in readers in order to actively engage with the opposition. Through reading dangerously, she believes that readers can be carried away to a “disaster zone” which enables readers to negotiate over some critical concepts such as enemy, oppressor, and victim.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"12 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131957491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Autobiography, which has maintained its existence for centuries, has been influenced by the change that occurred in the perception of novel and in 1977, Serge Doubrovsky coined the term “autofiction” in order to separate contemporary, impermanent, disruptive, multi-layered and fragmented self-narratives from the conventional forms of autobiography. The aforementioned concept is concretized the transition from subject to text and hence the transformation of the author. Along with the major economic, historical, social and cultural transformations that has been defined as “postmodern” and took place between the years of 1980 and 1990, this new notion has drawn considerable attention. In a sense, the concept of autofiction, which has been emerged as a result of the rise of individualism, narcissism, and hedonism does not only appear in literary works but also in every aspect French culture. The text structure distorts the meaning relations while establishing it, re-establishes it while breaking it, and the meaning is constantly shifted. While the translators create this literary feature, which is a reflection of a perfectly functioning systematicity in the source text, within the conditions of the translation, they may touch the boundaries between making themselves visible and making Kafka and/or the narrative visible. The aim of the study is to examine these contacts in translations through the systematic relations presented by the source text, in terms of the aspects they add to and subtract from the target text fiction, and to clarify the structural criteria in terms of the translation process.","PeriodicalId":213916,"journal":{"name":"Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Uluslararası Filoloji ve Çeviribilim Dergisi","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133831575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
