Until now, only analyses of existing instructions have been published, while guidelines for making instructions motivational are not yet studied carefully. We present four strategies that can be followed, and an experiment that was meant to test the effects. The results show that motivational elements do increase the user's appreciation of the instructions, but have no effect on performance, self efficacy, or appreciation of the product. However, there are indications that further research may show effects.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. IPCC 2004. In 2002-03, our faculty developed writing and oral presentation rubrics as well as a digital archival tool to help our institution achieve those goals. In this interactive session, presenters describe and define the digital archival tool and assessment rubrics used at SDSM&T. In so doing, they enrich participants' understanding of the assessment process by helping them: (1) learn about the construction and use of digital archival tools; (2) learn about the construction and use of rubrics; (3) assess writing samples using a rubric; (4) learn about cross-disciplinary collaboration, classroom application, and campus wide assessment; and (5) discuss their concerns, experiences, and observations relating to assessment as an instructional method to increase student learning. Participants leave with experienced advice on creating assessment tools, insights into the advantages and pitfalls of cross-campus faculty collaboration, and examples of how one rubric can be used in a variety of disciplinary settings.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. Yet not all types of knowledge are easy prey; indeed, I will argue that much of what we know defies the pen and taunts the page. The goal of this workshop is to explore one such type of elusive knowledge: that which pertains to our kinesthetic sense, the knowledge we have and rely upon daily about bodily position and movement. After this exploration, we will discuss the kinds of knowledge one must acquire to dance a tango and we will critique systems for recording dance movements in print. Finally, we 'II consider what we *ve learned about the tango and ballroom dance and consider its application to writing and reading.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. In brief the recently adopted ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements are found in Annex 1-Personnel Licensing; Annex 6-Operation of Aircraft; Annex 10- Aeronautical Telecommunications, Volume IICommunication Procedures including those with PANS status, and Annex 11-Air Traffic Services, and they accomplish the following: Strengthen the requirement that the English language be available to international flights; Establish clear minimum proficiency level requirements for flight crew members and air traffic controllers; Introduce an ICAO language proficiency rating scale applicable to native and non-native speakers; Clarify the requirement for the use of both plain language and ICAO phraseologies; Standardize on the use of ICAO phraseologies; Recommend a testing schedule to demonstrate language proficiency and; Provide for service provider and operator oversight of personnel compliance. This work outlines the new standards and discusses implications for training and assessment. Structural grammar attempts to develop the student's sentence sense by studying the most common sentence patterns. The six basic sentence patterns can be combined to create compound, complex, or compound-complex sentences. In this workshop, you will be provided with exercises and the breakdown process for analyzing sentences and be given a chance to experiment with the online tutorials for the structuralist approach to grammar, punctuation, and style. The purpose of this workshop is three-fold: to introduce you to a structuralist approach to grammar and punctuation, to provide you with an opportunity to experiment with this approach, and to solicit your feedback for the usefulness of this approach for editors and new technical communicators.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. Frequently, the guide most qualified to guarantee safe passage across this daunting terrain is the technical communication professional. Experienced technical communicators accustomed to thriving on the chaotic borders between subject experts and users, engineering departments and management, old procedures and new technologies are adept at achieving multi-purpose objectives without compromising core requirements. Recent literature reveals that some of the most effective work in achieving adherence to new accreditation standards is occurring at engineering schools with established technical communication leadership. At the University at Buffalo (UB), the State University of New York for example, our Center for Technical Communication (CTC) is working with representatives from five engineering departments to develop strategies for achieving full integration of technical communication instruction within the engineering curriculum. This work, however, looks beyond instructional approaches to examine how technical communication professionals are guiding the institutionalization of effective engineering communication strategies within engineering curricula. Full integration of this core capability promises significant benefits not only to engineering students and their employers, but also to engineering schools seeking improved content mastery, higher retention rates, and higher competitive ranking.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. Communicating the inventory, meaning, and eventual understanding of the knowledge held within the corporation can be a daunting task This work presents a detailed methodology and case study of building enterprise business intelligence from a multi-dimensional metadata framework. The framework includes structural, integration, and semantic metadata as well as the physical components required to deliver the functionality to the end user. The case study section will review a large telecommunications effort at communicating the knowledge of enterprise business intelligence.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. I compare his approach to the commonly-accepted model that linguists use to describe how human languages vary widely, and yet are all thought to be based on a common set of human-language universals, generally understood to have been fixed by human DNA, the cumulative programming of human evolution. Hofstede's fixed set of cultural parameters likewise imply a set of cultural universals. By analogy with the linguistic parameters it becomes apparent that beneath all the highly visible differences between cultures, there would likewise be a set of a cultural universals, likewise probably shaped by human evolution and programmed by our common genetic code.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004.
