Time constraints and job definition keep this team from mining and managing the knowledge contained in these records. Some problems require code changes, and some problems require changes to product information, but most require both code changes and product information changes. This creates a gap in the documentation. This gap must be addressed both in the short term (between releases of the product) and in the long term (in the next release). To understand how service information is gathered, the authors studied the support process in IBM. To understand where breakdowns in communication were occurring, the authors surveyed information planners across a number of products. To address the \"between releases\" issue, they explored vehicles for delivering between-releases information, including a Web-based vehicle for communicating short-term changes to information that has already been shipped. To address the \"lack of communication\" issue, they advocate fixing the process to incorporate the flow of service information into documentation into the ISO knowledge management model.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. When research is cited to support Web design guidelines, that research has frequently been conducted as part of a small usability study or a print-media study. Whether such sources can be validly generalized into standard Web design guidelines is questionable but the practice is widespread. Professional technical communicators may be interested in conducting experiments to determine what Web design elements most benefit their audiences, paying attention to how those users interact with their own computers at a place and time of their own choosing. Conducting such research, however, requires a level of technical expertise usually reserved for programmers. To address this problem, our research team has been developing a tool to aid non-programmers in conducting Web-based experiments of Web design features. The ultimate goal of such experiments would be the development of research-based Web design guidelines.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. Often they have difficulty seeing the connections between the actions involved in managing projects and their writing assignments. We present our strategies for coordinating concepts and connecting writing assignments to action. We include examples of assignment guidelines that we have developed and refined over time, explicit links from the writing assignment to the project management process, and a discussion of our successes and challenges as we work across disciplines and try to present the information in an integrated manner.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. Despite PowerPoint's popularity, many dislike the tool, accusing it of obscuring data and boring audiences. The current backlash against PowerPoint stems largely from Edward Tufte's criticisms in \"PowerPoint is Evil\" and The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint. Tufte believes that PowerPoint is abused at conferences, in meetings, and in classrooms more that it is used e3ffectively. Because most audiences, including attendants of IPCC's annual conferences, have come to expect PowerPoint in most if not all conference presentations, professional and technical communicators need to assess their uses of PowerPoint and whether or not this slideware program is most appropriate for their target audience and for the type of information being presented.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. In such cases, the visible public site is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. In addition to the design and delivery of content on the public site, there needs to be a reliable and effective system (which may include other linked websites) by which content creators and reviewers work together in the development and review of site content. In addition, this system may have to provide an efficient method for approved content to be formatted appropriately and posted on the public site. There can be many challenges to establishing and maintaining such a system in support of an internal website community of content creators and review board members. These challenges can be caused or exacerbated by: geographical separation, multiple disciplinary perspectives, differing levels of technical expertise, and the need to coordinate across organizational boundaries. The website of the Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence (MSCoE) is such a site, facing challenges like these in support of an internal community of website content creators and reviewers. This work describes the system we have implemented to address these challenges and support the work of this internal community, as well as to link the results of that work seamlessly to public website delivery. This system combines technical tools for managing and facilitating content and publication tasks with both informal and formal methods of interpersonal and team communication. The lessons learned in developing and supporting this internal operations community can be applied to other website projects with similar goals and issues.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. If technical communication is a profession, it must have some mechanism for identifying and validating the work that its professionals do. This mechanism must provide a clear entry and exit from the profession and a clear career path for advancement. Everyone would benefit from an objective, fair, and meaningful system of certification. The author defines the terms that are going to be used. Then the author discusses five reasons that the proposition for certification is a valid one. Then he describes five current approaches to certification by different organizations. Finally, the author describes twelve issues that must be addressed and tasks that must be undertaken to move the profession towards meaningful certification.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. These studies and earlier ones have analyzed quantitative data, such as people's ratings of different typefaces on different personality attributes. These studies have not addressed why people rate typefaces differently across personality attributes. We report findings from a survey that gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. We asked writing students to rate 15 typefaces on 10 personality attributes (e.g., \"artistic\") using 1-7 Likert scales. We also gathered qualitative data by soliciting written comments about the typeface ratings. We posed two research questions: 1) What personalities do different typefaces have, according to participants' assessments? and 2) How do participants explain their ratings of typeface personality, i.e,, why do they assess particular typefaces to have particular personalities? It is hoped that this study, combined with future research on the anatomical features of typefaces, will help technical communicators analyze typefaces so that they can make informed decisions when choosing typefaces for their documents.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004. While the training policy for each phase will be governed by factors that relate to national, institutional or professional particularities, the new ICAO requirements will ensure that language training courses around the world will share common features. These training courses will need to be specified in terms of five principal features -objectives, syllabus, methodology, resources, and structure. When even their own management team casts an ominous eye in their direction every time the notion of budget cuts and subsequent layoffs loom large, the writing community could easily be justified for having a sense of paranoia that their perceived value-add to the development effort of new products is significantly less than that of their code-crunching counterparts in the next aisle. This work attempts to dispel some of that angst by sharing one technical communicator's experience in facing self doubt head-on, in diving into the deep end of the developer pool early in the project cycle, finding ways to contribute to the design and development effort, and to provide real value as an active member of the project team. As a result, a strong and mutually respectful relationship between technical communicators and programmers has been established, with programmers learning to seek out the technical communicator's advice on GUI design and usability, message formats and standard usage of terminology, and actually listening to (and in many cases implementing!) suggested ideas from their dedicated writing team.","PeriodicalId":202491,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference, 2004.
