Mobile apps have played an unprecedented role during this pandemic to enable citizens to participate and interact with social issues while raising concerns about privacy and surveillance. In a partnership of the Natal smart city initiative of the university and the public ministry, we deployed the “Tô de Olho” (TdO) platform for integrating different sectors of society against coronavirus spreading in the state of RN, Brazil. In less than four months, TdO reached more than 20,000 users with several user roles, functionalities and a strictly defined privacy policy. Location data allows TdO to notify users when they have possible suspicious contact with an infected person or have gone through virus hot zones. The platform also helps city health officials to select people for infectious testing, according to user information on symptoms, comorbid diseases, contact with infected people, risk status and QR health code. Our integration with private institutions enables employers to know which employees have tested positive to protect work environments. We discuss the partnerships involved with TdO’s deployment and compare our context with related apps around the world, suggesting that public scrutiny, government investments and integration with active applications in the city are essential to achieving massive use. Further, we evaluate the feedback of active users (N=175), analyzing the positive points and advising improvements for future work on participatory applications during an epidemic.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122161043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Personalised data access methods are required to deal with the variety of users, their goals and preferences on available data, and need to be adapted to the unique characteristics of data lakes. Pay-as-you-go or on-demand solutions are advocated, where integration is progressively carried out, and methodologies to enable personalised data exploration are required. In this paper, we present a methodological approach to build users’ profiles, in terms of context, determining the roles and activities of users while acting in the Smart City, and preferences expressed on indicators semantically derived from data lake sources. The proposed methodology includes: (a) the definition of preference constructors based on the semantic representation of indicators from data lake sources; (b) the definition of users’ profiles, in terms of context and preferences; (c) the definition of a procedure to support domain experts and data analysts for enabling personalised exploration of indicators.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133724433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to further enhance the wait time reduction benefit of batched matching by incorporating learning-based open driver guidance and rebalancing. By leveraging the rider demand data, the guidance solutions are computed through the integration of machine learning techniques with a two-stage stochastic programming model. To validate the performance of the proposed approach, we conduct numerical experiments using the New York taxi trip data sets. Our results show that the proposed approach outperforms the single value estimation model and the parametric model using Poisson distribution in terms of average wait time. When assuming the open drivers are randomly located before the batching time window, the proposed approach reduces more than 70% of average wait time compared to batched matching without guidance.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132754861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The low power wide area network (LPWAN) plays a key role in IoT techniques due to the characteristics of wide coverage and low power consumption. However, it is hard to decide which one of the LPWAN techniques to be implemented in a specific application for best practice. Considering this, we discussed the main characteristics of the three popular LPWAN technologies, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and Sigfox, and proposed an LP-INDEX to weighting them according to application requirements. To further distinguish their difference, a comparison test based on parking detection sensors using the three different techniques was implemented as a use case.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114405718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Policy makers and stakeholders in Palestine (PS) have made the decision to move towards a knowledge-based economy with the aim of providing a rapid but sustainable economic growth. Thanks to the EU funding, it was possible to transfer know-how from European experts to PS and to enhance the capacity building and skills of professors, students, and industry employees. Although the Covid-19 pandemic has compelled to delay some activities related to Academia-Industry cooperation, like the students’ stages at European universities and enterprises, the academic activities have been developed as planned, just accelerating the adaptation of the didactic material to remote learning, phase that was already included in the initial project plan. The paper analyzes the structure and content of the developed didactic material, and the corresponding students’ feedback after the first year of courses delivery.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"66 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120928143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some actions need to be taken to make it safer, hence, we have proposed, implemented, and deployed a support system that predicts and generates, based on the prediction, a program-card for a Federal agency responsible for patrolling highways which cross most of the big Brazilian cities. We used the data from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) about road accidents to test the performance of the generated models and demonstrate the designed dashboard. To improve the robustness of such applications, decentralized collaboration is imperative in a vehicular network. Moreover, decentralized collaboration poses threats, such as forged message injection, forged identity, and repudiatory activities, as most vehicles are stranger to each other. In recent years, blockchain technology has been widely used in the vehicular network to enhance trust, provenance, and eliminate unauthorized access to the vehicular services. However, most of the existing vehicular blockchain suffers from issues related to scalability, efficiency, and transaction verification. In this paper, we propose a lightweight vehicular blockchain architecture for distributed model sharing to enhance trust, verifiability, and non-repudiation in distributed vehicular collaboration. We propose a novel PoVS-BFT protocol and an effective two-step transaction verification mechanism for model sharing applications. Finally, simulation results are presented to conform to the efficacy of our proposed architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed PoVS-BFT protocol can minimize the size of consensus committee up to 62.5% which in turn reduces communication complexity during the consensus process.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132008007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we explored the strategy of conveying recommendations to drivers through buses that are in front of them and equipped with a variable message sign (VMS) on their rear. We analyse the impact of such a strategy on the system equilibrium, using the Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) microscopic simulation suit. There is a correlation between the number of buses and the percentage of informed decisions and, therefore, it is crucial to consider the frequency of the bus services and the communication efficiency between the road-side (RSU) and on-board (OBU) units, as well as articulate the RSU location with traffic infrastructure, in order to minimize transmission failures and obtain a better traffic performance.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128760574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To promote a rational development in cities, the maintenance of green infrastructure is primordial. In this study, we propose a framework to evaluated changes in the environmental quality of forest fragments using open-access satellite data. The environmental quality of forest fragments was obtained using landscape ecology analysis and the prediction of future scenarios by Markov Chain Analysis and Celular Automata. We demonstrate this framework using a location that comprises an environmental preservation area, the JundiaíMirim river basin, containing the remnants of Atlantic forest near the São Paulo state capital, southeast of Brazil. The results showed a constant trend of deterioration in the environmental quality of natural vegetation, attributed to the intense occupation process of urbanization in the watershed. The proposed methodology showed great potential to prevent the deterioration of urban forests, allowing the understanding of driving factors and disturbance dynamic in forest fragments. The locations of very low environmental quality proved to be the most vulnerable to the occupation process, highlighting the need of actions to preserve the Atlantic forest in Jundiaí-Mirim river basin.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130714675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic declared in Spring 2020, a stay-at-home order was made in many cities in the United States and other countries, which caused the conversion of university education entirely online right in the middle of a semester. Students have experienced both face-to-face and online instruction in a single semester with almost the same duration. This paper discusses our survey-based study of over 300 students taking a course from the departments in computing and engineering college of a higher education institution in the US, in order to understand the effectiveness of face-to-face and online education through quantitative and qualitative research methods. The familiarity of online resources is relatively high to students and instructors in the computing and engineering disciplines than other disciplines. That technology use itself might be less likely a barrier in the instruction allows us to focus on the effectiveness of teaching and learning. We also offer discussions on the challenges and opportunities of online education that are likely to be a persistent future education option.","PeriodicalId":201808,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"252 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122488075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
