Thus, speech acts are among the prominent areas that have been investigated in the field of Inter-language pragmatics (ILP). Hence, the current study examines the realizations of the speech act of refusal by young adult Egyptian students in their L1 (Egyptian Arabic) and L2 (English). The study also explores the socio-pragmatic features of Egyptian refusals in terms of power and distance. 2270 cases of refusals were collected by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) and field notes. The sample consists of 200 DCTs and 60 instances of refusals extracted from field notes collected by the researcher from natural observations. The data are analyzed according to an adaptation of the taxonomy of refusal strategies (RS) by Beebe et al. (1990). The findings reflect a great amount of positive pragmatic transfer as most of the participants’ refusals are indirect refusals. The main strategies that are used include statements of explanations, statements of alternatives, and statements of regret. In addition, adjuncts to refusals such as gratitude and positive opinion are used in refusals to interlocutors of equal and higher power. Furthermore, the results reveal an amount of negative pragmatic transfer in the participants’ L2 refusals. Moosavinia, Somaye Sharify","doi":"10.30958/AJP.5-2-3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30958/AJP.5-2-3","url":null,"abstract":"Frank writes that the characters of migration literature invariably deal with migration in different ways, from \"the experience of migration and the uncertainty of displaced identities as destructive, agonizing, and painful to the experience of migration and displacement as productive, fascinating, and appealing, but in general, as he argues, the migration literature concerns redefining immigrants\" identities to show their heterogeneous or hybrid feature. Jhumpa Lahiri has treated the same themes of migration and postcoloniality in most of her works. Being an American of Indian, or more accurately Bengali, descent, her works all have echoes of her life. This essay focuses on the various ways in which Jhumpa Lahiri employs hybridity in the second part of Unaccustomed Earth, entitled \"Hema and Kaushik\", to convey the unhomeliness of her postcolonial subject. Briefly, it is an account of an ethnic-American man, Kaushik, who is unable to root himself, either emotionally or physically. In this sense, his story becomes an excellent example of a hybrid text since the author addresses the protagonist's unhomeliness by constructing a text that defies fixedness and shows the impossibility of clinging to a center. This study intends to argue that \"Hema and Kaushik\" is a narrative permeated by unhomeliness, both in the tales it tells and in the form that the narrative takes. A writer such as Milazzo (2015, 2017) has discussed some discourses tying together apartheidera and post-apartheid South African English literature, among them continued considerations of institutional racism. The point of departure of my present study is that postmodernist transnational features, seen by some critics as characterising post-apartheid South African literature written in English, have been highlighted at the cost of the deviances obtained in the literature. In this paper, I compare conceptions of the post-apartheid South African city represented by Ivan Vladislavic’s satirised white characters on the one hand, and on the other hand those of the black characters in the works of Niq Mhlongo, Kgebetli Moele and Phaswane Mpe. Collectively and across the two categories, I scrutinize the four writers’ novels Welcome to Our Hillbrow (2001), Dog Eat Dog (2004), Room 207 (2006), The Book of the Dead (2009), Double Negative (2011), The Restless Supermarket (2012), Untitled (2013) and Way Back Home (2013). I interpret the later texts by black writers in relation to their earlier long narratives, in order to take account of the evolution of this category of my selected texts to the period in which their later works grapple with social issues of the same era as those of the white writer Vladislavic. One group was presented explicitly some frequent grammar mistakes previously elicited from ten experienced teachers of English that included the signalling principle (using several colours, sounds and semiotic signs). The other group was exposed to the functional approach, where grammar mistakes were implicitly dealt with, using the same pictures as teaching resources used by the experimental group. Both groups kept the interactive and functional practice. After using different instruments to test recognition and oral production, findings revealed there were no significant differences with a P-value of 0.314 and a 5% level of significance when both groups were compared in the recognition stage of mistakes. This means that both groups benefited from explicit and implicit presentation of specific English contents. However, in the oral production stage, the group that was explicitly exposed to some grammar mistakes did a better job at \"monitoring\" and self-correcting some of the mistakes that had been shown in the presentation stage. These indigenous languages are mostly spoken in bordering regions of the country, as well as in settlements located in diverse ecological regions. One of these indigenous languages is the Criollo Sanandresano (SAC) spoken in the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, located on the north-west Atlantic coast of Colombia, with the status of official language since 1991 (Article 10, Constitution of Colombia). Criollo Sanandresano, the vehicular language here in informal conversations, is an English-based creole that developed in the seventeenth century and emerged after a process of language contact with English (superstrate), West African languages (from the Atlantic slave trade) and Spanish (substrate languages). Following Thomason (2001: 63), we assume that in situations of language contact all language levels can be affected and \"anything\" can be adopted from the languages in contact. Our aim in this paper is to describe the current situation of Criollo Sanandresano and to analyze it from a linguistic point of view, in order to see whether the acknowledged view that creoles have a simpler grammar (e.g. lack of inflectional morphological markers, development of analytical particles, etc.) and more internal variability than older, more established languages holds (McWhorter 2005, Thomason 2001).
