Arthralgias may be severe and worsen the quality of life. Gabapentin, an analogue of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is a second line antiepileptic drug that is also approved for neuropathic pain. Gabapentin is effective in taxane-induced arthralgias and myalgias, but there is no established schedule for its use. Here we report the use of high doses and a different usage pattern of gabapentin in a patient with taxane-induced arthralgia and low back pain who also showed signs of a mild to moderate degree of polyneuropathy. Taxane users usually have polyneuropathy either due to the toxic effect of this drug or to the cancer itself. Two prior reports of effectiveness of gabapentin on taxane-induced arthralgias have mentioned little or nothing about polyneuropathy in their cases and we believe this matter deserves discussion. Gabapentin seems to be active in high doses and may be the first choice of treatment in taxane-induced ar...","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"14 1","pages":"271-276"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73088472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These patients were followed for a period of 1.5 years after labour.The factors that influenced back pain in the pregnant patients were: multiparity, former back pain during pregnancy, and weight gain during pregnancy. Method: In this study, 50 patients referred to the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology, Marmara University, Faculty of Dentistry, were studied. A clinical examination, a complete review of past medical history, and a detailed history of RAS was performed in each patient. Clinical features of apthous ulcers and visual analogue scale values scraped (VAS) were recorded. Cytological examination was performed by collecting smear material scraped off the lesion surface. Triester glycerol oxide (TGO) gel (Protefix®, Queisser Pharma) was applied to lesions three times a day. Results: A significant reduction of the number of erythrocytes and inflammatory cells, and a significant increase of mature epithelial cells were observed. Methods: A total of 1100 women, eligible study subjects, were selected. Of those, 1045 subjects participated in the screening phase. The screening protocol included several interview items that have been defined as components of the FMS. Subjects were also asked questions on demographics. Individuals screening positive were invited to be examined by a physician to confirm or exclude FMS using the 1990 American College of Rheumatology Classification Criteria (ACR). Results: The overall prevalence of FMS was found to be 5.6%. The prevalence of FM is highest in the 50–55 years age group (9.3%). Using logistic regression analysis, being part of an extended family, oral contraceptive use and stressors increased the risk of FMS, while a family income of $3000–3999 decreased it.","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"24 1","pages":"251-257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74887597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A retrospective analysis of the pain control charts of 204 patients was performed. Forty-one patients received morphine with fentanyl (GI) and 163 patients received only morphine (GII). The patients were evaluated twice each day. The degree of pain relief was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The doses used and analgesic drug-related complications including adverse effects were noted. The VAS scores in GI from postoperative days 1–3 were 2.8 ± 0.8, 1.8 ± 0.7, and 1.3 ± 0.5, respectively, and the VAS scores in GII from postoperative days 1–3 were 3.1 ± 0.9, 2.3 ± 0.8, and 1.9 ± 0.7, respectively. Each patient attending the outpatient clinic to see the Consultant or the Specialist Nurse was asked to complete the brief pain inventory (BPI) and the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HAD). We looked at the data of patients who had received the tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) amitriptyline as a part of a multi-treatment regime over a period of 4 years from August 2001 to July 2005. Material and Methods: We looked at the data of patients who were treated with amitriptyline in a 4-year period, starting from August 2001. We selected 124 patients on whom full information and follow up was available. In addition to treatment received we also looked at BPI pain score and HAD mood scores.
