Methods: Subjects consisted of seven patients with chronic discogenic lower back pain who underwent intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET). Subjects were asked to describe the usual distribution of pain before IDET. If heat stimulation during IDET reproduced the usual pattern of pain, subjects were required to describe the distribution of induced referred pain, which was then drawn on a body diagram. A total of 9 discs were studied. Results: Pain referral maps were constructed using IDET of the lumbar intervertebral discs. Referred pain distributions from intervertebral discs in this study resembled distributions of L2 discogenic pain. Conclusions: The main afferent pathway for pain from the lower intervertebral discs appears to be through the L2 spinal nerve root, from the sinuvertebral nerves.","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"17 1","pages":"161-165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74436241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: An experimental paired design of different controlled pain levels administered by an iontophoretic device. Each study subject received two stimuli, which were separated by a 7 day interval. Subjects were asked to assess their pain levels using a 10 cm VAS and to assess whether the two painful stimuli were different or the same. Results: 40 volunteers were studied. None of the subjects with a VAS difference of 0–0.9 cm could differentiate the difference in pain intensity between the first and the second stimulus. Seven of the nine subjects with a VAS difference of exactly 1.0 cm distinguished the second electrical stimulus as more or less painful than the first electrical stimulus. All 21 subjects with a VAS difference greater than 1.0 cm differentiated the intensity between the first and the second electrical stimuli.","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"49 1","pages":"119-121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85803210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to Bigliani's classification, acromial morphology was classified in three types; Type I (flat), Type II (curved), Type III (hooked). We evaluated acromial type in three age groups; Group 1: 25–35 years (67 cases); Group 2: 36–55 years (100 cases); Group 3: 56–65 years (57 cases).We found a significant difference in the distribution of acromion types between Group 1 and Group 3 (p = 0.04), and on the left shoulder (p = 0.03). Type I acromion was more prevalent on left shoulder in Group 1. Type III was more prevalent in both shoulders in Group 3.Our study raised the possibility that different shapes of acromion may be acquired as a response to traction forces applied via the coracoacromial ligament, and excessive use of an upper extremity may be responsible for these secondary acromial...","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"17 1","pages":"155-159"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77628449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The CPS was administered by the Helsinki University Hospital Pain Clinic and was provided by a senior anaesthesiologist specialised in pain management. During the first year, 266 patients were seen and the medical records of 212 patients were analysed retrospectively. Information was collected about the requesting units, and types, duration, anatomical regions, intensity, mechanisms and treatments of pains of the patients, and the work-load expended for the consultations. Results: The reasons for consultations were cancer (37% of patients), chronic non-cancer (27%) and acute pain (20%). The most common pain mechanism was nociceptive. The number of consultations per patient varied from 1 to 32. Most (56%) of those patients with more than four visits had invasive treatments. The potency and toxicity of many drugs also change according to the time when they are administered. There are also some studies of the biological rhythms in pain sensitivity. In the present study, central and peripheral antinociceptive effects of aspirin and dipyrone, commonly used analgesics, were evaluated chronopharmacologically in mice. The central antinociceptive activities of these drugs administered intraperiotoneally (100 mg/kg) were investigated in mice using tail clip, tail flick and hot plate tests, and the peripheral antinociceptive activities of these drugs were investigated using a stretching test with acetic acid when the drugs were administered at 9.00 a. m. or 9.00 p. m. The central nociception was not different between the two groups, while the sensitivity to pain was significantly greater with the acetic acid test (p < 0.05) at night than in the daylight in the con...","PeriodicalId":19808,"journal":{"name":"Pain Clinic","volume":"172 1","pages":"195-200"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77031926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
