Despite this obvious difference between blood and tissue, medical studies looking at the impact of diets and drugs have primarily utilized changes in qualitative or at best semi-quantitative imaging [4-6], weight and blood tests to monitor presumed changes in heart disease and cancer. However, changes in heart disease and cancer cannot be measured through the mere use of blood tests alone, since these blood tests merely tell us what is happening within the blood and not what is happening in the tissues of the body proper [7,8] – hence, the persistent debate about the consequences of different diets or drugs, and the potential risk for CAD and cancer [9-14] – and the persistent doubt and confusion by the public and media [15-18]. Frankly, if I hadn’t spent more than three decades working out some of the details and limitations in our knowledge and published studies based upon what I read in the lay press I would be just as confused [19-25].","PeriodicalId":191049,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Journal of Food and Nutrition","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115818311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diets tested were a commercial diet (Diet 1, 0% maggot inclusion) and a maggot diet (Diet 2, 100% maggot inclusion). The values obtained for both treatment groups indicated nutritional adequacy of the diets. Non-significant differences were observed between both treatment groups for nearly all the hematological parameters. A marked increase in the total protein, ALT, AST and triglyceride levels was observed in the blood of fish fed the maggot diet compared to the levels in the blood of fish fed the commercial diet, suggesting health improvement in fish fed the maggot diet. The replacement of fishmeal with maggot meal is acceptable from a growth perspective and in terms of the observed histological architecture. The results show that the maggot diet can be conveniently used as a total replacement for fishmeal in the diet of Nile tilapia.","PeriodicalId":191049,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Journal of Food and Nutrition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132178913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Routine evaluation of one’s risk for coronary artery disease has focused on measuring cholesterol levels in the blood. Assessment of the benefit of lowering LDL cholesterol has focused on the use of these blood tests, coronary arteriograms and Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scores. However, evidence demonstrates that changes in blood cholesterol and other inflammatory markers does not correlate with actual changes in physiologic CAD. The use of most cholesterol lowering medications is not associated with a reduction in body LDL cholesterol, but rather a shift of LDL from the blood into the cells of the body, where actual oxidative damage is associated with inflammatory problems. Absent the demonstration of improvement in physiologic CAD, coupled with increased questions about benefit to risk ratios, the true benefit of these drugs should be transparently reviewed along with a call for more investigation into the impact of the dietary issues related to CAD.","PeriodicalId":191049,"journal":{"name":"Scholarly Journal of Food and Nutrition","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115718152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
