For example, certain inspection applications of scanning electron microscopes (SEM) require high probe current, which exacerbates resolution degradation due to CI. However, current methods for estimating CI, such as direct ray tracing and analytical approaches, struggle to balance speed and accuracy. This limitation significantly impedes the efficient optimization of SEM design parameters. In this study, we propose a quasi-ray tracing method based on perturbation theory, which simulates CI-induced trajectory displacement and the Boersch effect using a Monte Carlo ray tracing approach. Our method eliminates the need for iterative solvers employed in conventional direct ray tracing, thereby increasing simulation speed by over 105 times. Benchmarking against the direct ray tracing method demonstrates an error margin of less than 1% over a broad parameter range covering typical SEM applications. This quasi-ray tracing approach offers a fast, accurate, and general solution for CI estimation in charged particle imaging systems.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144035194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern TEMs can also be used in scanning TEM mode (STEM) where the beam scans across the sample. The preferred detector for STEM mode is the high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) detector. The aim of this study was to compare image quality of resin embedded biological samples such as yeast (Saccharomyces), algae (Chlorella, Haematococcus), plant leaves (Nicotiana), human cells (MCF7), and animal tissue (mouse liver and brain) between TEM bright-field and STEM-HAADF mode. Generally, images taken in STEM-HAADF mode showed better image quality in terms of contrast, brightness, and signal-to-noise ratio. Samples of sections that did not receive postcontrasting with uranyl acetate or lead citrate appeared significantly less grainy. Specifically, STEM-HAADF mode resulted in significantly better image quality of algae cells, MCF7, and liver cells that did not receive postcontrasting. Artifacts visible in TEM mode were absent in STEM-HAADF mode. Thus, we can conclude that STEM-HAADF mode has significant advantages when investigating resin embedded biological samples that have little contrast or sections that did not receive postcontrasting rendering postcontrasting of sections unnecessary.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144001668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were characteristic features for each age. The papillary crest shape changed as the chickens aged: an arc-shaped crest in 1-day-olds, a \"V\" shape in 2-month-olds, and a serpentine pattern in 6-month-old chickens. The glottis was bordered by a papillary border in 1-day-old and by rostral nonpapillary and papillary portions in 2- and 6-month-olds. The apex and body carried fork-shaped filiform papillae in 1-day-olds; it had long, thick-branched papillae on the lateral tip region; the apex carried thin-branched papillae in 2-month-olds; and it had thick, long papillae in 6-month-old chickens. The rostral apical part was surrounded by membranes, two or three in 1-day-olds, four to five in 2-month-olds, and six to seven in 6-month-old chickens. These glands were located only in the free tongue and the root's second half. Histochemically, all ages had positive PAS and AB reactions, with moderate reactivity in the anterior and strong reactivity in the posterior part. Collagen fibers were seen within the connective tissue core, and glandular acini varied among ages: lower in 1-day-old, moderate in 2-month-old, and abundant in 6-month-old chickens. In conclusion, the tongue evolved to strongly adapt to the food particles available at each age stage.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144326242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research aimed to improve taxonomic clarity and facilitate species differentiation within this genus. Species-specific variations in scale features revealed by SEM included length, width and shape of scales; focus area sculpture; number and width of radii; circuli number and intercircular space; length of lateral line canal and size of anterior opening of canal. Notable findings include polygonal-shaped scales in S. niger and S. plagiostomus, while circular scales were noted in S. curvifrons, S. esocinus, and S. labiatus. S. curvifrons had the largest scales, while S. plagiostomus had the smallest. The maximum number of radii was observed in S. plagiostomus, and the minimum in S. niger. Circuli were most numerous in S. esocinus and S. plagiostomus, and minimum in S. niger. Moreover, lepidonts on circuli and chromatophores on the posterior margin were absent across all species. Lateral line canal length was similar in S. esocinus, S. labiatus, and S. plagiostomus, with significant variation in S. niger and S. curvifrons. These morphological traits provide valuable insights into the differentiation of Schizothorax species and serve as a foundation for resolving taxonomic complexities within this genus. Such findings are crucial for accurate species identification, a key step in developing effective conservation strategies for these endemic fishes of the Kashmir Valley.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144275259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach overcomes the limitation of FESEM related to its representativeness on larger areas. The strategy is based on imaging an area of 3 mm × 3 mm where a set of regions of interest (ROIs) of 600 μm × 600 μm with similar mineralogy is selected and imaged. A second selection of areas of 150 μm × 150 μm inside the ROIs is performed. The three sets of images, linked through their mineralogy and organic matter, account for pore sizes within their given resolution range, providing an efficient computational method. The cumulative porosity plot, in addition of showing the contribution of the different pore sizes to the total porosity, enables the detection of fissures. The pore size distribution function allows to discuss the practical limit for counting small pores, around 30-40 nm for the samples studied in this work, under the given experimental conditions. This value is appreciably larger than the resolution of FESEM and the minimum pore size defined considering either 1 pixel/1 pore or 9 pixels/1 pore.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144018452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tin does not originate from the primer mixture itself but is typically linked to a thin disc-shaped foil placed over mercury fulminate-based primers to prevent embrittlement of the cartridge case and primer cap. However, this practice has not been previously reported or observed in hunting ammunitions. We designed an experimental protocol to investigate the formation of quaternary GSR particles containing Pb-Ba-Sb-Sn, following shots fired from a double-barrel shotgun using modified hunting ammunitions. These ammunitions were loaded with multiple pellets and included a thin tin foil over the primer's flash hole. Our results confirm that the tin foil is directly responsible for the origin and composition of the quaternary GSR particles detected on the collected stubs. Additionally, the hunting ammunitions market has recently seen increased production of environmentally friendly ammunitions, including shot pellets made of tin, tin alloys, or coated with tin. Our findings provide a foundation for further experimental studies into GSR from such eco-friendly ammunitions, especially in forensic investigations involving tin-containing pellets.
","PeriodicalId":18625,"journal":{"name":"Microscopy and Microanalysis","volume":"31 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2025-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144010124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics for present ion types provide interpretable descriptors of each community that indicate the relative level of enrichment or depletion of ions within a community. We demonstrate our technique on a set of APT reconstructions of irradiated 316 stainless steel. Our method detected chromium carbide and Ni-Si-rich precipitates and located a grain boundary based on Ni and Si enrichment.
