ICT are increasingly a structural aspect of societies, however, ICT continue to be a highly gendered area of life in all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, and a source of significant social inequality in enduring ways. This paper reports on an ongoing research project ‘Gender@ICT’ which explores the interrelations of gender and technologies in an educational context in Portugal, based on focus groups and group activities (games with images related to ICT and gender) with preschool children and 9th grade students. The results bring evidence that ICT is highly related to gender stereotypes which affect boys and girls representations and practices, including their educational and career choices.","PeriodicalId":173351,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124463093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are several reasons for this, but opinions point to the student's inability to solve problems, difficulties in logical reasoning and lack of critical attitude. The Portuguese Ministry of Education proposed in 2015/2016, in extracurricular period, the Getting Started with Programming challenging in primary School activities, with the intention of promoting computational thinking competences in students. Two schools from Coimbra city opted to use Scratch software for the implementation of this project aiming to promote school success in subjects already mentioned. The project, based on the academic curriculum of 4th grade, intends to link the theoretical knowledge with the practical knowledge, promoting the characteristic values of the city of Coimbra. This project implementation resulted in different applications (computer games) created by students, covering the contents of the mentioned subjects, but concretizing these knowledge with the socio-cultural and environmental realities of the city of Coimbra. The following study demonstrates the results obtained in 5 classes in 2015–2016 and six classes in 2016–2017, according to student satisfaction and project evaluation.","PeriodicalId":173351,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"212 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120913128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sound sensors (integrated in tablets) together with a free app were used by children to improve their awareness in what concerns noise, and its consequences. A set of strategies were designed and implemented to support children in making sense of the use of sound sensors in the specific context of a science museum school, with their own teachers, and where each class stays only for a week. Children's registers and answers to a satisfaction questionnaire contributed to validate the developed strategy. Primary school teachers' feedback made it possible to follow-up the experience. The dissemination of the experience to other primary schools is being planned in the context of a research project on Environmental Health (Eco-sensors4Health).","PeriodicalId":173351,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115156200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Complementarily, the TEL@FTELab (Technology EnhancedLearning@Future Teacher Education Lab) research project investigates how a technology enriched training can improve teachers' education. The research presented in this article was developed in the context of both projects and created a set of multidisciplinary learning scenarios to raise awareness in environmental health, through the use of sensors in teacher training. The referred scenarios focus on various dimensions of environmental health in schools, such as sound and air quality (trough the study of carbon dioxide concentration in air). The assessment of the use of sensors to explore such dimensions of environmental health in school made it possible to validate learning scenarios and envision multidisciplinary practices of prospective teachers regarding the empowerment of children to eco-innovate in environmental health.","PeriodicalId":173351,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132938987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Marques","doi":"10.1109/SIIE.2017.8259669","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SIIE.2017.8259669","url":null,"abstract":"The gap between the use of mobile devices inside and outside school can lead to students' disengagement with learning activities in formal education. To fill this gap, educators can take advantage of mobile devices' dissemination to give students access to educational Augmented reality (AR) systems. However, this type of exploration is relatively new, and researchers are still studying AR's advantages and challenges in education. In that line, the EduPARK project is developing an interactive AR mobile application to support geocaching activities in outdoor environments, thus creating situated learning opportunities. It is to be explored by students and teachers from basic to higher education, but also by the public. The project follows a design-based research methodology, with several cycles of AR application development, user testing and evaluation. This manuscript is a work-in-progress report of the EduPARK project's options regarding the AR content and triggers, and points out some future directions. The EduPARK's option was to use image-based AR, with marker-based tracking, to display mainly botanical content. In a first implementation experience, 74 pupils (aged 9–10 and 13–14) from two schools tested a beta version of the application and AR markers in an urban park. Some technical issues, related to the markers' recognition, were observed and registered by both pupils and monitors, leading to the revision of the markers' purposes, structure, and content. Examples of refined AR markers and content are presented and discussed in this manuscript. Future work will include developing markerless tracking for this application in the selected urban park. Additionally, a proposal for the installation of the refined markers will be presented to the Park's management entity and the fully developed application will be freely offered to the public, promoting the autonomous exploration of this resource. This work is useful for teachers and both educational technology developers and researchers, as an example of how to successfully develop image-based AR for outdoor settings.","PeriodicalId":173351,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128202763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
