The higher education sector in Malaysia is currently experiencing intense competition as many higher education institutions are mushrooming in the market. As a result of this, students now face more complexities when choosing a suitable higher learning institution for their studies. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to propose a valid framework that determines the most significant determinants of students’ decisions on choosing higher education institutions among local students in Sarawak. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship strengths between job perspectives, reputation of institution, location, cost, parental advice, peer influence, and student’s choice intention. This study takes on the primary data collection approach. Data was collected through a complete set of questionnaire in a survey. Non-probability sampling method (purposive sampling) was used in the process of data collection. A total sample of 324 secondary school students participated in this study. The SmartPLS (version 3.2.6) was utilised to perform the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) estimation procedure to examine the proposed direct and indirect relationship. Interestingly, the results indicated that reputation of university and parents’ advice contributed the most to students’ decisions regarding their higher education choice. Current findings of the study may be informative and can play a role as a basic guideline for future scholars. The findings may also assist marketers of higher education institutions to understand the concept of “business-to-students” before promoting and convincing more potential students. Several research limitations, implications, and recommendations for future research have also been highlighted in the study.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129878247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, numerous factors were reported by researchers to be responsible for extreme poor cost performance, among which is inaccurate cost estimate. Preceding researches focused largely on: identifying and categorizing errors in Bills of Quantities (BOQ) as a document that provides cost estimate, errors in construction contract document at large, and sustainability of the application of BOQ despite the faced challenges. It is therefore necessary to determine the level of effects of errors in BOQ as a component of contract document on cost performance of public building project in order to augment the effectiveness of cost performance in North Eastern Nigeria. Positivist research approach was used where 140 questionnaires were administered to quantity surveyors (QSs): consultants’ QSs, contractors’ QSs and public servants’ QSs whom were selected using simple random sampling technique. 112 were returned and 105 were used for the analysis with 7 invalids, this resulted to response rate of 75%. The effect of errors was measured using multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that errors in BOQ contributes to poor cost performance with statistically significant effect size of 6.8%. This research is limited to errors in BOQ in North Eastern Nigeria. It should serve as a wake-up call to stakeholders in Nigerian construction industry on the consequences of errors in BOQ for enhancing effective cost performance for national economic development.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"88 43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130809590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Out of the 180 copies of questionnaire distributed to grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 contractors operating within Bintulu and Sibu in Sarawak, only 36 copies were duly completed, making the valid response rate to be 20 percent. Descriptive analysis and Relative Importance Index (RII) were utilized in analysing the data. The descriptive analysis revealed that availability of construction site, type of building constructed and market condition are the important determinants of construction duration. The result of relative importance index revealed that the availability of construction site is the highest determinant. This study has complemented the existing knowledge on the determinants of construction duration.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130772512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The richness of this multiculturalism elements is reflected in the various motifs applied in the traditional public buildings. Influences of this Multiculturalism will also be discussed in this paper. The paper reviews a series of composition analyses of the motifs in the building components and elements of palaces, an aristocratic house and a mosque in Malaysia in order to study the composite elemental vocabulary based elements and the links to the local endemic Malay identity and traditional decoration motifs from the selected building elements; such as wall and ventilation panels, door leafs, staircases and balustrades are extracted n studied morphologically. However, parents often overlook teaching financial skills, such as budgeting and investing, while their children are still living at home. Consequently, children are forced to learn how to handle their finances after leaving home, entering colleges or universities. Sometimes they may make mistakes that would cost them several years of repayment of loans. This research therefore examined the prime factors of University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) students on managing their personal finance, and the relations between each influencing factor with the youth financial knowledge at UCTS by the using Theory of Planned Behaviour (TBP). The resulting analysis and interpretation provided a description of the influence of cash management and credit management behaviour related to students' financial knowledge. The qualitative method in this study derived from a constructive perspective. The outcome of this study is that the influence of family members is important yet complicated for personal financial management behaviour. Based on the findings, three primary categories with supporting factors emerged as the critical components of each category. These three primary categories represent a conceptual framework for the students' personal financial management.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"14 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133525283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beginning with an architect’s gaze initiated by a measured drawing exercise, it observes a range of architectural adaptations that the building has undergone in integrating itself into a transposed location, before suggesting that consideration of the historical and social narratives embedded in building-and-builder is inevitable to map their communal contribution to national conversations fully. Employing a hybrid methodology of architectural case study and interpretive, literaturebased, social analysis, it finds that engagement with the equatorial climate wrought the most change to the northern Chinese typology of this building, and that there is a metaphorical parallel in the inherent narrative that highlights cultural negotiation and compromise. It concludes by arguing that any unequivocal quest for historical truth can only be healthy for a multicultural society that keeps vigil over political harmony, and that the process necessarily involves “re-storying” as much as “archaeological” findings. It suggests five potential areas for further research.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131216683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surveys involving undergraduates of two private institutions of higher learning were conducted. Using cross-tabulation, the equality of scholarship and loan distributions to undergraduates with reference to four independent variables: ethnicity, gender, areas of origin and income groups were investigated. Chi-square test was used to examine associations between the provision of scholarships and loans and the four independent variables. By employing cross-tabulation and multiple logistic regression, the scholarship distributions favour male over female and urban over rural respectively in terms of type-1 and type-2 equality measurements. However, cross-tabulation analysis shows that the scholarship distribution favours native in terms of type-1 equality but non-natives for type-2 equality. Multiple regression analysis also indicated that native had more scholarship support than non-natives. For the income groups, both cross-tabulations and multiple regression analyses yielded similar results whereby the high income group received most scholarship, followed by the top-bracket, lowest, low and medium income groups. For the loan distribution, cross-tabulations and multiple logistic regressions indicated that loans favour non-natives over natives, female over male and urban over rural respectively in terms of type-1 and type-2 equality measurements. However, for the income groupings, it showed mixed results respectively when using both analyses. The result also indicated that the probability for students to get scholarships and loans contrast distinctly with one another with given characteristics. Moreover, respondents highly supported the issues surrounding loans as an alternative mechanism of financing tertiary education. To ease the budgetary pressure and for equity and efficiency reasons, it is suggested an income-contingent loans can be introduced as a student financial support.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120935949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
