Empirically, the factors determining consumers to purchase functional foods are widely investigated. However, inconsistent findings regarding their effect on purchase intention remain in the literature. Besides, studies considering health consciousness and the perceived benefits of purchasing functional foods in a single study are rare. Therefore, further study was required to re-examine these factors' effect on the functional foods eater's purchase intention. Through purposive sampling, 167 functional food buyers in Malaysia participated in this study, and their responses were further analysed using the partial least squared-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The result revealed that only three factors (attitudes, subjective norms, and health consciousness) significantly affected functional food purchase intention, while perceived behavioural control and perceived benefits had an insignificant effect. The importance-performance map analysis (IPMA) result further showed that the effort and resources should be concentrated on the subjective norms due to unsatisfactory performance. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are further discussed in this study, and it's expected to be beneficial for the stakeholders to cultivate the purchase intention of functional foods. For instance, stakeholders such as government agencies and businesses must maintain their existing attitudes and health consciousness efforts as the current performance for both constructs is satisfactory. However, more improvement efforts and resources should be concentrated on subjective norms. It is one of the most influential constructs in determining the buyers’ purchase intention on functional foods, but its performance is unsatisfactory.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"83 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139130250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globalization brought in new technology and saw the rise of multiple industries within the country. This affects the structure of the workplace and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). This paper takes on the research gap to expand the knowledge and insight on the determinants of OSH practices compliance among employees in Sarawak. It is vital to uncover the determinants of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practices compliance among employees due to the fact that health and safety sustainability is fundamental to the performance and growth of organizations in any economic sector. The main purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practice compliance among employees in Kuching. The research employed quantitative research methods with questionnaires as the tool to collect data. The research location is none other than the capital city of Sarawak, Kuching with a sample size of 384. The data analysis was done via Statistical Package for Social Sciences, SPSS software version 25. Based on data analysis, it is found that the availability of safety rules and procedures, the effectiveness of safety training, and the readiness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have significant relationships towards OSH practices compliance among employees in Kuching. Contrary, management commitment toward safety is found to have a not significant relationship. The study findings offer vital information for top management decision-making to increase OSH practice compliance in their organization. Besides, this study contributes to the expanded literature in the field of OSH practice compliance especially in the Sarawak local context.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"36 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139131470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Assessing the Impacts of COVID-19 Outbreak on the Construction Sector in Sarawak","authors":"Nurzalikha Sa’adi, Maximus Balla Tang","doi":"10.35370/bjssh.2023.5.2-07","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35370/bjssh.2023.5.2-07","url":null,"abstract":"COVID-19, first identified in Wuhan, China in November 2019, rapidly spread globally, leading to a worldwide pandemic. This novel Coronavirus disease profoundly affected every aspect of our lives, from societal and economic to political dimensions. Consequently, many countries, including Malaysia, were forced to enforce lockdowns as a safety and health precaution. Regrettably, as stay-at-home orders were enforced, many industries experienced significant setbacks. Hence, this led to unprecedented challenges to the global construction industry, including the construction sector in Sarawak, Malaysia. The lack of sufficient research on the specific implications for the construction industry in Sarawak during the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbates the problem. Therefore, the aim of this research was to identify the impacts of COVID-19 on the construction industry in Sarawak. To address this, the researchers utilized a comprehensive quantitative research approach, distributing a structured questionnaire survey primarily to those within the construction domain in Sarawak. Respondents were selected from the CIDB's Grade 7 contractor directory, with 393 questionnaires distributed and 153 responses collected. The data obtained from a Five-Likert Scale Survey were analyzed using SPSS software. By employing this rigorous quantitative approach, the research sought to gather comprehensive insights from various stakeholders in the construction arena regarding the multifaceted impacts of the pandemic. Research findings revealed substantial challenges within the construction sector in Sarawak due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These challenges included labour shortages, disruptions in the supply chain, and financial constraints. Regulatory challenges intensified the disruptions, leading to delays or complete halts in numerous projects. The financial implications not only presented immediate hurdles but also cast doubts on the sustained feasibility of various ongoing endeavors. Despite the challenges, the pandemic prompted innovations in the construction industry. This research serves as a guiding blueprint for the future, potentially mitigating the adverse effects of future pandemics on the sector.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"82 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139132144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ubiquitous nature of smartphones and the availability of real-time internet connections drive mobile social commerce. Online consumers are vulnerability to opportunistic exploitation if some parties withhold resources. Effective social interaction requires information transparency and trust. Consumers may depart from their routine buying decisions, which may or may not be the result warranted. Even so, in order to achieve the necessary level of success in online shopping, users must have confidence in their capacity to organise and execute a sequence of actions. This research examined three factors that affect consumers’ purchase decision on mobile social commerce, namely social capital, situational influence and technology self-efficacy. A snowball sampling approach was applied in this research to gather responses from the e-consumers in Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan by means of WhatsApp, Wechat and email using a questionnaire. A total of 396 samples were analysed using SPSS and SmartPLS software. The assessment of the PLS-SEM structural model demonstrated that social capital and situational influence have a significant effect on consumers’ purchase decisions, while trust partially mediates the relationships. Although technology self-efficacy has no direct impact on consumers’ purchase decision, it is mediated by trust. This research provides information on the factors which directly affecting consumers’ decision using mobile social commerce. Besides depending on AI-based techniques for early detection of fraudulent patterns and outliers for protection, consumers should take the initiative of self-protection during online shopping. Future studies should include psychological and personality characteristics, such as resilience and vulnerability to add to the body of knowledge on mobile social commerce.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"109 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139134417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
