Bugis has been recognized as an ethnic group which has successfully accustomed to the local environment and culture but still maintain their own. One of the characteristics of their culture is represented on their dwellings. In Kubu Raya District, there are three Bugis dwellings which were established by the third generation of Bugis descendants. This research concerned in comparing them with the Bugis houses in South Sulawesi, the city where this tribe originated. The method of sample selection was based on the age of the dwellings, the status quo of the owner that must be the third generation of Bugis descendant and there are no significant changes in the dwellings. The results of the study indicate that there are similarities and differences between the samples and the Bugis Houses in South Sulawesi, particularly in terms of their functions, space arrangement, and mass configuration. The mass configuration in the Bugis Houses in South Sulawesi confirms that the social status of homeowners was also found in all samples. However, the differences in the way Bugis in Kubu Raya function and arrange the space proves that there has been an assimilation between the culture of Bugis and Malay. This prompts the Bugis houses in Kubu Raya to have different spaces with the Bugis houses in South Sulawesi and the same space as the house of the local Malay.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133364391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is also an NGO working to promote and preserve handicrafts in Sarawak, such as the Society Atelier Sarawak. Seven of Sarawak’s handicraft have been awarded the prestigious UNESCO/World Crafts Award of Excellence in 2016. However, at the grass root level amidst the efforts to promote handicraft industry in Malaysia, the scenario differs. This paper aims to identify issues and problems faced by Iban women who are involved in handicraft production in Central Sarawak. This research employs a qualitative approach through in-depth interview and participatory rural appraisal. A total of 17 longhouses were visited for the study and interviews were conducted on 34 women who were involved in handicraft production. Findings show that the main type of handicraft are mat, weaved textile (pua kumbu), beads jewelleries and accessories, baskets, bags and souvenir items like key chain. The main reasons for continuing the tradition includes interest, way of life and self-consumption and seeking for additional income.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122299886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, this study aimed to evaluating the features and encounters on the implementation of the PPA, 2007 in tertiary institutions in Bauchi State. The study adopted quantitative approach using descriptive and exploratory design. Data were collected through questionnaire survey from 80 respondents using purposive sampling. The data collected were subjected to analysis using mean ranking to identify the features, encounters and the level of implementation of PPA, 2007. Also, multiple regression was been used to assess the influence of the features and encounters affecting PPA, 2007 on implementation. The study revealed that the features and encounters are highly significant with 52% and 56% effect size on the dependent variable. Also, the study indicated that implementation of PPA, 2007 and enforcement usage in the study area is moderate. Thus, the study recommends that PPA, 2007 be amended in such a way that appointment of procurement officers in all public institutions be clearly stated in terms of appointment criteria such as profession, academic qualification, and professional experience and qualifications. The result perhaps, will help eradicate the culture of having non-professionals with no procurement related expertise being saddled with the responsibility of coordinating procurement activities and processes in the public in institutions in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129997848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However dividend payout is not compulsory in conventional investment. Among the reasons to hold back dividend payment is for investment purposes which is necessary for both wealth maintenance and growth. Of course, if the investment rate is very high, the present shareholders or investors are deprived of wealth distribution for the benefit of future investors which is against the spirit of profit and losssharing of a partnership in Islam. The question is, would firms change their dividend policy to cater for tacit requirement of divident payment by Islamic investment once certified shariahcompliant status and reverses the policy when shariah-compliant status revoked? Hence, this study, investigates the impacts of the shariah-compliant status of firms in Bursa Malaysia on their dividend payout behavior by analysing their preand post-shariah-compliant years data. The results showed that the shariah-compliant status of firms has positive impacts on firms’ dividend payout decisions. The revocation of the status, startlingly, does not necessarily overturn the long-held dividend policies of the firms. Instead, the firms maintain consistent dividend policy, perhaps in an effort not to portray negative overtone related to the annulment of the shariah-compliant status to the stockholders and the market.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127373677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, contrary to the main harvest festival, Gawai Dayak, this celebration is less likely to be celebrated among the Ibans due to various reasons. This research aims to investigate the disappearance of Gawai Antu and determine its sustainability. This research could significantly contribute to the Iban community and to the state government of Sarawak where it could help in building greater understanding on the factors affecting the disappearance of Gawai Antu and suggestions on how to revive and sustain the festival. The study is focused on youths in Sarawak with the sample of the study was 88 youths in Kuching. This research is based on data obtained from a survey questionnaire and was analysed by using descriptive analysis. The data were gathered using Stratified Random Sampling and Convenience Sampling Technique. The research suggested that the extinction of Gawai Antu celebration is linked to modernization, religious barrier with cost and time constraints. The results also suggested that the three dimensions of sustainability of Gawai Antu are important to curb the disappearance of this festival namely, collaboration via partnerships, preservation and protection of the festival, and keeping the quality and authenticity of the festival. As this celebration is one of its kind, it would be recommended that production of more credible sources, creating practical exhibitions, and cooperation between relevant agencies would help in keeping the festival alive.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134258413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it would heighten its functionality in terms conservation and efficient use of resources, there is an apparent conflict between these two practices as intervention to the historic buildings must adhere to the principles of building conservation which dictates the need to retain the historical values of the building. This poses a challenge to protect the historic values whilst upgrading its usage to suit the contemporary needs and statutory requirement. Currently, there is a lack in the present guidelines that integrates SDEs into the conservation of historic buildings in Malaysia. This paper aims to identify SDEs and practices suitable to be integrated into the guidelines. To achieve this, a documentary review has been conducted by reviewing historic building conservation guidelines from selected countries and few rating tools for assessing building’s environmental design and performance. The identified SDE categories are: 1) energy efficiency; 2) water efficiency; 3) materials and resources; 4) indoor environment quality; and 5) sustainable site planning, building and management. From these identified SDEs, qualitative data would be collected to support it. Incorporating these SDEs into the existing guidelines for conservation of historic building would provide guidance to architects, building conservators and other stakeholders in promoting a more sustainable and greener practice of historic building conservation in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130742785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For hundreds of years Sungai Perak has been the seat of the traditional Malays of Perak. Used as the main ‘highway’ during its heyday, it is seen as the economic, social and political seat of the Perak royals. Sungai Perak also forms the heart of the transportation and communication for the people of Perak. As with other main rivers systems Sungai Perak holds many wealth and secrets. Remnants of old Malay palaces, traditional houses, royal tombs and vernacular mosques can be seen to this day along the river basin, as prove of the existence of the old Malay civilization. Architecturally, traditional house was built not only for shelter and safety reasons. All forms of traditional architecture are built to meet specific needs, accommodating the religious, cultural values and way of life. Based on these circumstances, it tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological and historical context in which it exists. However, this traditional Malay home will face extinction if it is not well preserved and documented for future reference. This paper discusses the development of architectural style on the Malay houses at Sungai Perak. Fifty (50) houses in Kampung Aji, Bota Kiri were documented and analyzed chronologically. The evidence is derived from sixty houses as case study. Data is collected through site observation and variety sources of documentation. The roof design, spatial organization and architectural elements several types of architectural design were found in the period of 150 years. All of these shapes up the evolution of architectural design of the Malay houses in Perak and contribute as an extension of knowledge to the traditional Malay architecture in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124231691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individuals can invest indirectly in property through Listed Property Companies (LPCs) and enjoy income from the returns. This study presents the significance and performance of listed property companies in 10 African countries from 2006 to 2015, with 3 countries from North Africa (Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia) and 7 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa (Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe). The study analyses the risk adjusted performance of 64 LPCs in African countries using the Sharpe Ratio Index in comparison with Shares and Bonds. Correlation coefficient analysis was used to determine the potentials for diversifications among the asset classes within each respective country and across the African countries. The results revealed that only two of the countries (Botswana and Mauritius) LPCs outperformed on risk adjusted basis while the other eight countries (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) underperformed either shares, bonds or both on risk-adjusted basis possibly attributed to global financial crisis, Political instability, high void rates, corruption, insurgency, and harsh economic conditions. Shares is the most performing asset class outperforming in 6 countries followed by Bonds and LPCs with 2 countries each respectively. The findings further revealed that LPCs offer potentials for diversification to investors in almost all African countries due to the low correlations between the LPCs and the other asset classes (Shares and Bonds).","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121851371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
