The study of building typology is more related to similar functions but of different form. Form can be with regards to roof, site location, façade, building materials, ornaments, detailing, spatial programming and etc. Typology study is important for decision in policy-making related to conservation and promoting regional architectural characteristics. In academic points of view, typology study provides a fundamental basis to generate knowledge in architectural discourse, particularly in the understanding of the origin and evolution of vernacular architecture and the complex influences of culture, economic and the immediate environment to characteristics of the types of similar building, making the study relevant for historical references. This paper focuses on examining the different typology of the Rajang’s traditional dwelling. The Rajang is part of the Melanau ethnic group in Sarawak. The mighty Rejang River was named from this sub ethnic group of the Melanau – the Rajang. There is also a close affinity between the Rajang and the Melanau of Kampung Nangka and Kampung Banyok Sibu, in terms of language and family kinship. The Rajang tangible culture, in particular, the traditional vernacular housing is facing threat of loss due to modernisation and assimilation with the mainstream group of Sarawak, such as with the Malays and Iban. Therefore, it is critical to document the traditional typology of the Rajang’s vernacular housing. Thus, the objective of this article is to examine the evolution of Rajang’s traditional housing typology from the sixteenth century up to the twentieth century. Findings show that, there are three main typology of the Rajang vernacular housing, namely – the Early typology; the Intermediate typology and the Modern typology. Findings also show that the characteristics of the Early and Intermediate typologies are similar in terms of scale and ergonomic requirements. The Early and Intermediate housing are based on traditional scaling based on human scale, known as the “depa”, whereas the Modern typology are built based on British standards scale, using feet and later meter. Therefore, the Modern typology are larger and slightly taller. All typologies are minimalist with very little ornaments.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126626622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, Malaysians seem to prefer the consumption of imported honey. The local honey industry can be invigorated if Malaysians are willing to consume more locally produced honey. This study attempts to examine the factors affecting the decision to purchase local natural honey by using a probit model. Besides the general socio-economic factors, an analysis of product-related factors is of importance to understand the choice made by consumers. Results indicate that factors such as stock availability and distribution availability of honey, packaging, consumers’ income, and educational background influence the purchasing decision of consumers towards local honey.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126696519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the rapid development of the Internet, it has directed the interest in how to encourage the owner or manager of SMEs in Sarawak. Specifically, this paper examines the influence of need for achievement and risk tolerance factors on attitude towards adoption which directly anticipates e-business adoption in Sarawak’s SMEs. The motive of this study was the limited studies related to e-business adoption by SMEs, especially in Sarawak. Furthermore, most e-business studies concentrate on the level of acceptance in the e-business adoption instead of the owner’s or manager’s attitude towards the adoption. Thus, this limits the understanding about e-business adoption by SMEs in Sarawak, in particular, the need for achievement and risk tolerance factors that influenced the attitude towards the rate of the e-business adoption in Sarawak’s SMEs. SPSS 24.0 and SmartPLS 3.0 are used as the main analytical tool which confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, discriminant validity and reliability on the measurement model, and tvalue test on the structural model to answer the research objectives. Data were collected from 238 Sarawak’s SMEs. A quantitative survey is conducted among the owners or managers of SMEs in Sarawak and purposive sampling method was used for the research. The findings revealed that need for achievement and risk tolerance factor are led to the adoption attitude of Sarawak’s SMEs in the adoption of e-business platform. This study validates these variables for e-business adoption among SMEs in Sarawak. Practically, the present findings also extended the current understanding of e-business adoption by Sarawak’s SMEs. The results will be useful to SMEs sector, government, and policymakers devising e-business policies. The conclusion and implication of study is outlined.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117094034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dual nature of the studio is grounded in its uniqueness as both a physical setting and a pedagogy. These two elements have resulted in the studio becoming a crucial component in architectural education. Despite the studio being a critical physical set up for gaining architectural knowledge, there has arisen a deficiency in the empirical research data, specifically in terms of a person-environment congruence. Therefore, this study aims to determine the end-users’ priorities. The main objective is providing insight into establishing the studio attributes that are prioritised by architectural students. The finding is a useful reference point when planning and designing a student-centred studio environment. The Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) approach forms the basis of this quantitative research through the use of a questionnaire survey. A case study was conducted at University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS). The respondents were one hundred and sixty-eight undergraduate students of architecture programme. The ranking order of sixteen studio attributes arose from the results compiled from the BWS analysis. The aforementioned attributes can be scrutinised depending on their relative levels of significance. This study appropriately determines the ranking and relative importance of sixteen studio attributes in a straightforward graphical presentation of an environmental quality profile. The application of BWS is proven as a viable approach to determine students’ prioritisation of studio attributes based on their perception.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131841279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaysia envisions to have at least 30 percent of women directors in board of directors by 2020 and making mandatory for large listed firms to take the lead since 2017. On the other hand, bank loan is one of the main sources of finance to Malaysia listed firms. On top of that, cost of debt plays a significant role when firms considering debt finance. Fortunately, it can be reduced through corporate governance mechanism, namely a gender-balanced board. Nevertheless, the empirical evidences on the relationship between gender-balanced board and cost of debt based on emerging markets including Malaysia remaining scarce up to date warrant a study. Therefore, a study to determine the relationship between women directors and cost of debt in Malaysia is proposed in respond to the callings. There are a few implications of the proposed study. Firstly, it contributes to the hot debates on how women directors contribute to the board. Secondly, it contributes to the further understanding of different context’s outcome, specifically both developed and emerging market. Practically, it sheds light to the regulators and policy makers in setting future corporate governance guideline. Besides that, it also provides insight to nomination committee in recruiting new board member. Lastly, it can become an additional reference to the potential investor when making their investment decision.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115524402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is vital to exploit the opportunities presented by the strength that evolve from ICT adoption in corporate businesses. This study aims to assess the benefits of innovative ICT facilities adoption in construction project delivery in Nigeria. The study employed quantitative data gathered through wellstructured self-administered questionnaires to solicit information from construction professionals in the study area. With 68.28 percent response rate, frequencies, percentages, mean item score and Kruskal Wallis test were employed to analyze the gathered data. The most important benefits of ICT deployment in construction are increased productivity of employees, reduces mistakes/errors in contract documents, time-saving, enhanced marketability and competitiveness and ease of doing complex tasks. Also, no significant difference in the perception of construction professionals regarding the benefits of innovative ICT deployment in construction was observed. Construction organizations would need to embrace the benefits of ICT by adopting innovative facilities to boost performance and increase visibility and market share. Adequate plans and budget should be provided to reap the strategical, tactical and operational benefits of adopting innovative ICT solutions in construction project delivery.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123635239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effective way to provide comfort thermal condition in this climate is by optimizing air movement and natural ventilation. Centre aisle and back veranda, found particularly in melayu Pontianak vernacular house, could be considered as special spatial arrangement that was predicted to have been used to create comfortable thermal condition for the house by optimizing natural ventilation performance and this research was done to prove the reliability of such building elements. This was a computed experimental research which used digital model simulation in computer with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FloVENT® 9.1. The experiment emphasized the variation of centre aisle and back veranda to simulate natural ventilation performance in various wind direction (i.e. front, tilted and side perpendicular). The evaluation was determined by assessing the intensity and distribution of air movement within the living spaces. The result of experiment showed that centre aisle and back veranda acted as ‘regulators’ and also as the airflow controller for other rooms by applying the Bernoulli’s principle and venturi tube. This funnel allows living spaces to have comfort natural ventilation, which has airflow velocity less than or equal to 0.5 m/sec and distributed evenly spread. The airflow velocity inside living room and bedrooms are 0.78 m/sec and 0.05 m/sec respectively during front wind direction; 0.52 m/sec and 0.40 m/sec during tilted wind direction, and 1.04 m/sec and 0.98 m/sec during side perpendicular wind direction. It is concluded that funnel is important to the natural ventilation performance in melayu Pontianak vernacular house.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121578178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Sarawak’s Malay society, the traditional ways of treating mothers in confinement, include the use of herbal treatments, and age-old ways of physical care. However, the underlying philosophies of the most do’s and don’ts during the confinement are not clearly explained, and neither are they properly documented. For the young generation today, the traditional confinement care is perceived as not modern in this scientific age. This perception lessens the number of traditional care midwives, as well as those involved in the preparation of traditional confinement herbal medicines; leading to the depletion of knowledge on herbal plants used during confinement care. Hence, realizing the need for the restoration of indigenous knowledge, the main objective of this paper is to document and explain the traditional Malays’ ways of confinement care in Sarawak. The phenomenology approach used in this paper recorded the traditional practices in the Sarawak’s Malays of confinement care. The traditional practices of confinement care discussed in this paper are qualitatively narrated through autoethnographic recorded experiences of the first author. The Sarawak’s Malay confinement care is classified into five functions and labelled as curing, cleansing, heating and toning, energizing, and gastronomy. Significantly, the findings would assure that with proper post-natal care, the risk of meruyan could be reduced. The details of the confinement care and support for the wife, attempt to answer most unexplained reasons in traditional confinement practices.","PeriodicalId":173200,"journal":{"name":"Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133694472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
