This study aimed at evaluating acute and sub-acute oral toxicity of E. sacleuxii roots ethanolic extract. Phytochemical analysis was conducted on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer. For acute and sub-acute toxicity studies 16 male rats n=4/group were used. The control group received 2% DMSO while treatment groups received 400, 1200 and 2400 mg/kg single dose (acute toxicity assay) and repeated for 14 days in subacute toxicity assay. Histopathological, serum biochemistry and hematological tests were analyzed. The results of FT-IR analysis recorded 12 dominant peaks, confirming availability of N-H, C-N, -C=C-, C-H, S=O, C-O and C-C functional groups. GC-MS analysis revealed presence of 17 bioactive phytochemicals mainly terpenoids and phenols. No toxic effect, organ toxicity or death was recorded in acute toxicity assay. In the subacute toxicity investigation, rats' behavior, gross pathology, and hematological parameters showed no significant changes. Biochemical analysis indicated an increase in alkaline phosphatase from 147 U/L at 400 mg/kg to 164 U/L at 2400 mg/kg however this was not statistically significant and no mortality was recorded. In comparison to the negative control, treatment groups’ gross and histopathology of livers and kidneys had no significant difference. These results demonstrate that 80% ethanolic extract of E. sacleuxii roots has no severe effects in both acute and subacute study. However, sub-chronic and chronic toxicity studies are necessary for further validation. ,","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43520095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study analyzed the phytochemical composition, antiproliferative activity and cytotoxicity of Carica papaya black seeds against the prostate cancer cells and Vero cells. Phytochemical screening was performed by standard procedures. Methyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell viability assay was used to evaluate the antiproliferative effect of crude extracts in prostate cancer cells against the control. Phytocompounds, namely flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, glycosides and saponins were found in the crude extracts. All papaya seeds’ extracts had antiproliferative activity towards prostate cancer cells. Ethyl acetate extract was found with higher antiproliferative activity with IC 50 of 3.64 µg/ml. The crude extracts were not toxic towards Vero cells as compared to the control. Isolation and characterization of active compounds from herein crude extracts and papaya black seeds are therefore recommended for future studies.","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45437837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, in vivo antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic activities were tested in the livers of hyperlipidemic mice. Activity levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-P X ), catalase, and malondialdehyde were observed. At the 500 mg/kg dose, NU showed strongest antioxidant activity compared with the hyperlipidemic mice. This dose also increased GSH-Px compared with ulvan. NU at a dose of 125 mg/kg showed the strongest antihyperlipidemic activity, significantly decreasing total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein levels (LDL-C), as well as elevating high density lipoprotein. The antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic mechanisms of NU may be related to the nicotinyl group in its chemical structure. NU may be effective in protecting liver tissue from the damage of a cholesterol-rich diet in mice and may be of use as a novel antihyperlipidemic agent.","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43330250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to review the literature on the applications of products derived from brown macroalgae as antiviral agents against human herpesviruses. To date, species of seven distinct orders of brown algae have been studied for this purpose, such as Fucales (19 species), Dictyotales (14 species), Ectocarpales (9 species), Laminariales (2 species), Scytothamnales (1 species), Sphacelariales (1 species) and Tilopteridales (1 species). The products evaluated in this review include extracts, fractions and isolated natural products, mainly terpenoids. Extracts, fractions and isolates of brown algae were evaluated against four viruses: simple herpesviruses types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein–Barr Virus (VEB), also known as human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4). This review shows products derived from brown macroalgae as potential antiherpetic agents.","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47266870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cultivar BRS Pérola do Cerrado is the first registered and protected cultivar of a wild Passiflora and has become an alternative to the passion fruit market due to its desirable characteristics for food, ornamental and pharmaceutic industries. Since plant tissue culture techniques are considered important tools for large-scale production of plants and bioactive compounds, the goal of this work was to evaluate the flavonoid content and the antioxidant potential of hydroethanolic leaf extracts from in vivo and micropropagated plants of this new cultivar. Phytochemical analysis was performed by HPLCUV-ESI-MS/TOF. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH and the iron-chelating assays. The activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase (CAT, SOD and APX) were also determined. Two di-C-glucosyl flavonoids derivatives from apigenin were registered as major constituents in both leaf extracts analyzed and were identified as vicenin-2 and schaftoside. Despite the low antioxidant potential observed by the DPPH assay, leaf extracts from both in vivo and micropropagated plants showed high chelating capacity. Although no differences in the activity of SOD and CAT were observed, the specific activity of APX was increased in leaf extracts of micropropagated plants. These results suggest that in vitro plants can be used as an alternative for flavonoid production from cultivar BRS Pérola do Cerrado.","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42777757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Endophytic actinobacteria, especially those associated with medicinal plants, are one understudied source. The goal of this study was to investigate whether the secondary metabolites of endophytic actinobacteria isolated from Harpagophytum procumbens, commonly known as the Devil's claw, have antioxidant and DNA damage protective properties. H. procumbens secondary tubers were collected from the Khomas and Hardap regions of Namibia, yielding a total of 23 isolated actinobacteria. The identities of the actinobacterial isolates were determined by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. This revealed 6 families affiliated to 7 genera that included the dominant Streptomyces genus (57%) whereas rare genera (Agromyces, Nocardiopsis, Rubrobacter, Patulibacter, Rhodococcus, Curtobacterium) and 2 unidentified strains accounted for 43%. The antioxidant results revealed that the ethyl acetate extracts of Streptomyces species strain A36, had the highest phenolic content of 1.993 ± 0.004 and total antioxidant activity of 0.258 ± 0.001. Meanwhile, extracts from Streptomyces spp. strain B12, had the highest radical scavenging activity of 95% at 0.1 mg·mL -1 while B43, an unidentified actinobacterium, had the highest total reducing power of 0.849 ± 0.003. In addition, 61% of extracts showed the ability to protect DNA from damage when exposed to hydrogen peroxide. None of the samples contained terpenoids, while 13 (72%) contain alkaloids, 17 (94%) contain phenols and 8 (44%) contained flavonoids. The present study concludes that endophytic actinobacteria associated with H. procumbens are a potential source of bioactive compounds with pharmacological properties.","PeriodicalId":16387,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Medicinal Plants Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42959652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
