After referring to some of the most important works found in the (Polish) literature (all concerned with teaching and learning the English language), in the further part of the article, the author advises on current education system in Poland. The empirical section, in turn, quotes the most recent figures excerpted from the data published by the Central Statistical Office in Poland, and regarding the number of speakers of particular modern foreign languages (based on primary, lower secondary and secondary education in the preceding school year, i.e. 2016–2017).","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131368309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis results indicate that specific language use variables are correlated with individual performance at the point of flight performance and individual communicative intentions. Also, language use was found to vary as a function of crew position, out-of-cockpit addressee and level of workload during the flight. Language use for the procedure purpose was tightly linked to cockpit panel readings, whereas language use for personal interaction was of ‘over a cup of tea talk’ pattern. These observations suggested a specific hybridness of the cockpit language discourse which might need to be further checked by an alternative research method of communication analysis., e.g., a content-coding method.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114606262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

McBride-Chang et al. 2008; E. Bialystok et al., 2005) have shown that the syllable is the basic unit when learning Chinese pronunciation. This study attempts to explore how adult native speakers of Polish (non-tonal language with the alphabet based on Latin script) develop Chinese tonal syllables through intensive training at the beginning level. Students from the Faculty of Philology participated in a four-stage phonetic teaching program and experiment. First, learners exercise excessive articulation of vowels, practicing how to carry the tone. Secondly, students try to assign the meaning to the joined segmental and supra-segmental phonetic units. Then, acquisition of Chinese morphemes/lexemes is supported with characters to differentiate homophones in the learning process. Finally, students are trained to decode the heard syllables in a sequence into meaningful phases and sentences. Next, based on the ongoing training, the pronunciation experiment in two series provides an insight into the development of the Chinese syllable production.","PeriodicalId":161619,"journal":{"name":"Applied Linguistics Papers","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114701695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
