Previous investigators have demonstrated that myocardial vascular volume varies with both perfusion pressure and contraction. The purpose of this study is to measure vascular volume in an isolated rabbit heart model under a variety of controlled mechanical conditions using 3-D MCE. Isolated rabbit hearts were perfused with a room temperature crystalloid solution in a Langendorff perfusion apparatus and a small balloon was placed inside the left ventricle and attached to a volume infusion pump. Digital images of the heart were acquired with a Volumetrics 3D ultrasound scanner at perfusion pressures of 0, 30, and 50 mmHg without and with a microbubble-based contrast agent. LV pressure was held at a constant level of 0 mmHg. Regional videointensity and LV area were measured from short axis images in six hearts. Background-subtracted videointensity increased linearly with normalized coronary blood flow (R/sup 2/=.99), demonstrating the ability of this method to noninvasively determine myocardial perfusion. Coronary vascular volume was estimated using a calibration technique and assuming the perfused myocardium may be modeled as a composite material, consisting of incompressible tissue and distensible vessels. Coronary volume was estimated to be 16-24% of the myocardium, comparable to values found in previous studies. Our method may be extended to noninvasively measuring regional coronary volume in patients, thereby providing an additional tool for physicians.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. We use multi-layer feedforward artificial neural networks trained by a standard backpropagation algorithm to determine the probability that a given Compton scattered photon originated from a certain point in the reconstruction space. Summing up this probability for all measured photons at each volume element (voxel) of the discretized reconstruction space gives a good estimate of the real X-ray source distribution. We reconstruct and discuss the point spread function obtained with different materials (germanium, silicon) used for the scatter detector and incident photons having an energy of 122 keV and 512 keV.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. Our design integrates wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibers onto an Anger-type detector to allow measurement of depth-of-interaction (DOI). As few as 0.3% of blue scintillation photons created in NaI(Tl) contribute to detectable signal at the end of the WLS fiber ribbon. Thus, maximizing signal output from the fibers is important for achieving the best possible DOI measurement. We have investigated the effects of two design options on the signal output from the WLS fibers: fiber geometry and methods of assembling fibers into a ribbon. A blue-to-green WLS fiber (Saint Gobain BCF-91A) was chosen because its absorption spectrum matches well the emission spectrum of NaI(Tl). Its emissions, peaked at 500 nm, can be detected with reasonable quantum efficiency by enhanced-green-response PMTs. These fibers are available in several configurations (round or square cross-section, single or multiple cladding layers) and sizes.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. We modeled a 11 mm thick orthogonal strip germanium detector (GOSD) with 2 mm pitch and compared its performance to an Anger camera with a 10 mm thick NaI(Tl) crystal. The Anger camera simulation method was validated by experimental measurements made with point and volume sources. Resolution and sensitivity were determined for air and scatter measurements. The device is intended for use in breast tumor imaging, and expected device performance was simulated in response to 5 mm spherical tumors embedded in a referenced phantom geometry previously used for the simulation of a CsI pixellated detector. The thorax, the breast and the heart background contributions are considered in this phantom. A comparison of the results obtained indicates that the GOSD provides superior contrast than the Anger camera for every tumor to collimator distance. Also signal to noise ratio, FWHM and FWTM show a better response for the Germanium pixellated detector with respect to Anger camera due to better energy and spatial resolution of the germanium-based device.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. These maps are derived from 4D spectral-spatial images that show the spatially localized absorption spectra of an introduced molecular probe. The spectral linewidth for each spatial voxel is linearly related to the local oxygen concentration. Shown here are an image of a phantom and an in vivo image of a tumor implanted in the hind leg of a mouse. We aim to acquire the 4D data sets in 15 minutes and to produce images with sub-millimeter resolution and oxygen concentration sensitivity of several torr. Slices through the 4D spectral-spatial images are shown, as well as the respective linewidth maps given by spectral fitting. The spatial distribution and linewidths measured in the phantom image correlate well with a priori expectations. The mouse tumor image shows probe and linewidth distributions that are consistent with the mouse anatomy and physiology, including a sharp distinction between the bladder and leg/tumor signals. These results demonstrate the promise of EPRI for the measurement of in vivo oxygen concentration.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. Each detector module is composed of a matrix of 400 YAP:Ce finger crystals (2/spl times/2/spl times/30 mm/sup 3/ each) directly coupled to position sensitive photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R2486-06). By applying two high resolution collimators to two opposite detectors we realised an integrated PET-SPECT scanner for small animals. At present, at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University of Ferrara, the scanner is employed in small animal SPECT studies with /sup 99m/Tc labeled radiotracers dedicated to obtain quantitative activity measurement in region of interest (ROI) directly from a reconstructed image of a in-vivo rat, with respect to the traditional ex-vivo measurement of activity with gamma counters. To achieve this goal, the scanner was calibrated referring it to a Isodose dose calibrator based on Geiger-Muller counters which previously underwent an absolute calibration with a known activity source. Preliminary results on quantitative tomographic heart perfusion and planar heart biokinetics studies are reported.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat. This technique will allow full 3D positioning in large volume GeDs. We have calculated the detailed electric field inside the detector using relaxation techniques and taking into account the surface conductivity in the gap between strips. The weighting field for the detector has also been calculated for determining the charge induced on the electrode for any position within the detector. These two fields have then been used in charge collection simulations to trace electron-hole pairs from the interaction site to the signal electrodes, calculating the induced signals on the anode and cathode for each time step. Using this simulation, we can determine the relative difference in charge collection times between the anode and cathode as a function or position in the detector, allowing us to determine the intrinsic variation in the timing signal at each depth in the detector, which will set a limit on our ability to determine the interaction depth. By including a random noise based on that modeled from a real detector, we can determine the expected depth resolution as a function of depth in the detector.","PeriodicalId":159123,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (Cat.
