Feline small intestinal lymphoma predominantly demonstrates a T-cell immunophenotype identified by standard immunopositivity for T cells with CD3 or immunopositivity for B cells with CD20. In contrast, a wide spectrum of immunohistochemical antibodies are applied in humans to diagnose the various specific lymphoma subtypes according to the WHO classification. Our aim was to augment our knowledge of immunophenotypes in feline non-B-cell lymphomas forming macroscopic masses in the intestinal tract. We evaluated the combined immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry findings from 15 cases. Neoplastic lymphoid cells were immunopositive for CD3 in 93% (14/15), granzyme B in 87% (13/15), CD5 in 20% (3/15), CD8 in 13% (2/15), CD4 in 7% (1/15) and CD56 in 7% (1/15) of cases. Cytotoxic granules indicating a cytotoxic origin of the neoplastic cells were identified by histopathology only in 13% (2/15) and by cytology in 47% (7/15) of the cases. Without immunohistochemical labelling of the cytotoxic protein granzyme B, the cytotoxic status would have been missed in 46% (6/13) of the cytological and in 85% (11/13) of the histopathological slides. These findings suggest that more complex immunophenotyping may advance our understanding and help prognosticate small intestinal T-cell lymphoma in cats.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":15520,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Pathology","volume":"212 ","pages":"Pages 20-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021997524002627/pdfft?md5=49e641153ea8436c190c1241892b7b2d&pid=1-s2.0-S0021997524002627-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141468451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The typical abnormality was a hoof wall disorder with a circumferentially deep ring and/or transverse hoof wall cracks parallel to the coronet on all feet and appearing after excessive ingestion. One affected Thoroughbred male was unique in that all the hooves had a rough surface with a very fragile hoof wall, but no wall rings or transverse cracking. This horse was euthanized because of dysstasia due to the permanent foot pain associated with hoof wall deformities in the front feet. To detect Se deposition in the hooves, we used energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis to measure the Se signal intensity of each lesion. Characteristic Se-kα signals were emitted from the areas of histologically damaged hoof wall at 33.76 ± 11.78 (mean ± SD) counts per second (cps)/mm<sup>2</sup>. In contrast, the signal from the uninjured proximal hoof wall was 1.43 ± 0.14 cps/mm<sup>2</sup> and that from the uninjured distal hoof wall was 1.51 ± 0.23 cps/mm<sup>2</sup>. The much greater Se deposition in the injured hoof walls suggests that their disintegration was caused by alkali disease. These results indicate that atypical hoof wall abnormalities due to alkali disease can be diagnosed by EDXRF analysis.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":15520,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Pathology","volume":"212 ","pages":"Pages 51-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021997524002664/pdfft?md5=5db0eb0256fed579142f5bb2743f75b3&pid=1-s2.0-S0021997524002664-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141622332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to establish clear morphological features enabling more consistent distinction between benign OETs and ovarian carcinomas (OvCas) as well as defining different histopathological patterns of canine OvCas. Analysis revealed a mitotic count threshold of &gt;2 as a potential criterion for differentiating OvCas from benign OETs. Alongside ovarian adenomas, ovarian borderline tumours were introduced as a distinct category among benign OETs. OvCas exhibited five different histopathological patterns, namely papillary, solid with tubular differentiation, micropapillary, cystic and sarcomatous. Since some OvCas can morphologically overlap with other ovarian tumours, the expression of cytokeratin 7, a cytokeratin expressed in ovarian epithelium, was assessed and proved helpful, although it was not expressed in all cases. Furthermore, we investigated the expression of 14-3-3σ and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). Based on the frequent expression of 14-3-3σ, this marker appears to have a role in canine OETs since it is not expressed in normal canine ovaries. The infrequent expression of COX-2 suggests that it is a poor candidate as a potential therapeutic target in canine OvCas.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":15520,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Pathology","volume":"212 ","pages":"Pages 42-50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021997524002640/pdfft?md5=0d53671ece2d4be731c44d48f1fb1ef1&pid=1-s2.0-S0021997524002640-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141579837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have shown that animals possessing both receptors allow for the rearrangement and emergence of new viral strains of public health importance. This study aimed to evaluate the expression and distribution of human and avian influenza A receptors in nine Neotropical snake species using lectin immunohistochemistry. We selected 17 snakes that were examined <em>post mortem</em> at the Veterinary Pathology Sector of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais between 2019 and 2023. Sections of nasal turbinate, trachea, lung, oral mucosa, stomach and intestine were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis using the lectins <em>Maackia amurensis</em> and <em>Sambucus nigra</em>. This research detected, for the first time, co-expression of SA α2,3-Gal and SA α2,6-Gal receptors in the respiratory and digestive tracts of snakes, indicating the possible susceptibility of these species to influenza A virus of avian and human origin. Consequently, snakes can be considered important species for monitoring influenza A in wild, urban and peri-urban environments. In October 2022, a captive, 1-year-old white-lipped peccary (<em>Tayassu pecari</em>), kept in a herd of five peccaries in a zoo in Finland, suddenly developed signs of inappetence and reluctance to move. Despite treatment, the peccary was found dead. At necropsy, the main gross finding was severe acute segmental necrotizing enteritis. Several other organs had lesions compatible with acute septicaemia, including petechiae and ecchymoses. Histopathology of the intestine revealed severe acute multifocal necrotizing enteritis with neutrophilic vasculitis, vascular fibrinoid microthrombi and myriad clusters of densely packed, rod-shaped, gram-positive bacteria on the tips of the intestinal villi. Bacterial culture was identified as <em>E. rhusiopathiae</em> by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Often, despite routine diagnostic investigations and confirmation of intestinal inflammation, an aetiology cannot be identified, leading to a non-specific categorization as chronic enterocolitis rather than an aetiological diagnosis. This study evaluates the histological features of gastrointestinal tissues from 23 SCMs, comparing animals with a clinical history suggestive of chronic enterocolitis (n = 14) with those without gastrointestinal clinical signs (n = 9). Tissues were graded according to the Nancy index (NI), a scoring system used in human medicine to evaluate disease activity in ulcerative colitis, a common form of human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Additionally, inflammatory cells in the colonic lamina propria were visually identified by type, counted and subsequently compared between diseased and control animals. Moderate to severe lymphoplasmacytic inflammation and structural changes were most common in the colons of affected SCMs, whereas histopathological changes were absent or mild in all examined small intestine (n = 17) and stomach (n = 11) tissues. The colonic NI had a significant positive correlation with clinical disease severity and 57% (n = 8) of animals with clinical signs had a NI grade of ≥2, consistent with moderate to severe, active IBD. Half of SCMs with recurrent rectal prolapse (n = 6) had a NI grade of 0, suggesting that intestinal inflammation is not always part of this condition's pathogenesis. The numbers of colonic lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils, macrophages and total leucocytes were significantly higher in diseased animals. This study validated the use of the NI in SCMs, enabling a more standardized histopathological evaluation of the colon in this species.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":15520,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Pathology","volume":"212 ","pages":"Pages 6-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0021997524002524/pdfft?md5=b9570134443e69da9774884d0cf1c5e3&pid=1-s2.0-S0021997524002524-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141433858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The heterogeneous nature of ovarian tumours makes accurate histological identification difficult, whilst treatment is limited to surgical excision. The tyrosine kinase receptor CD117 is neo-expressed in many tumours and represents a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target. This study aimed to establish if CD117 is neoexpressed in canine ovarian tumours. Immunohistochemistry was employed to assess expression of CD117 in 29 canine ovarian tumour samples. CD117 labelling was assessed with a semiquantitative immunoreactivity score, and the location of labelling was recorded as membranous, focal cytoplasmic or diffuse cytoplasmic. Histological morphology was assessed and used to assign subgroups based on growth pattern. Cytokeratin 7 labelling was used to indicate the tumour type as epithelial or sex-cord stromal in origin. Mitotic index, percentage of necrosis and vascular invasion were also assessed and evaluated for association with CD117 expression. Overall, 81% of ovarian tumours neoexpressed CD117 and normal ovarian tissue did not express CD117. Positive immunolabelling was seen in a subset of cells in both ovarian carcinomas (n = 20) and ovarian granulosa cell tumours (n = 3). There was no association between CD117 expression and patient age, histological subtype, mitotic index, percentage of necrosis or vascular invasion. Despite many similarities between these neoplasms in both species, only a limited number of studies have approached these entities in a comparative manner. Therefore, this review compares benign and malignant melanocytic neoplasms in dogs and humans, exclusively those arising in the haired skin, with regard to their clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular aspects. Shared features include spontaneous occurrence, macroscopic features and microscopic findings when comparing human skin melanoma in the advanced/invasive stage and canine cutaneous melanoma, immunohistochemical markers and several histopathological prognostic factors. Differences include the apparent absence of active mutations in the <em>BRAF</em> gene in canine cutaneous melanoma and less aggressive clinical behaviour in dogs than in humans. Further studies are required to elucidate the aetiology and genetic development pathways of canine cutaneous melanocytic neoplasms. Evaluation of the applicability of histopathological prognostic parameters commonly used in humans for dogs are also needed. The similarities between the species and the recent findings regarding genetic mutations in canine cutaneous melanomas suggest the potential utility of dogs as a natural model for human melanomas that are not related to ultraviolet radiation.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":15520,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Comparative Pathology","volume":"211 ","pages":"Pages 26-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140957729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
