The paper presents data on the statistical characteristics of the electromagnetic environments in aircraft cavities. Data are presented from a Boeing 707 airframe, a Cessna 404 airframe, and an operational Beech U-21 aircraft. The fall time of the transmitted pulse was greatly reduced and the peak amplitude decreased as 1/r/sup 1.3/. It is well known that cable twisting is beneficial for reducing the low frequency emissions from, and coupling to cables. However, many misconceptions have evolved with respect to the actual contribution of the cable twisting at high frequencies, in particular with respect to the electric-field and electromagnetic field emission from and coupling to cables. In fact, in certain text books, the \"pair-balance\" is attributed to twisted pairs, contributing a rejection of 20 dB and more. In the present paper, the actual effect of cable twisting on the reduction of radiated emissions due to common-mode and differential-mode fed signals is presented and discussed. Tests were conducted by the authors, in order to investigate the effect of pair twisting on the interference coupling to cables. Due to the duality between emission from- and coupling to cables, the results obtained by means of measurement of the field emission from the cables for common-mode and differential mode feed to the culprit cable can be applied for the estimation of the effect of twisting on the coupling to the cables of the system. It is clearly shown that for high frequency common mode emissions, absolutely no reduction in radiated emissions may be expected due to the pair-twisting. Measured data are compared with predicted values of reflectivity for prototype and production absorbers. Normalized site attenuation results are presented demonstrating improved performance for radiated emissions per ANSI C63.4. The original development effort [Ellam, 1994] included a survey of ferrite absorbers, design and construction of specialized test fixtures, computer modeling of basic and complex absorber structures, measurement of bulk dielectric parameters such (permittivity/permeability), examination of production and economic constraints, and measurement of new absorbers in EMC semi-anechoic chambers. The present follow-on paper is limited to a brief overview of the of previous survey results, new computer modeling of absorber structures and the design tradeoffs involved in the design of a broadband hybrid EMC absorber. This same ESD simulator using air discharge in a 150 ps test setup, with a charge voltage, between 2 and 8 kV had a peak current 2 times higher and a rise time of 1/6 of the contact values. A five step design order is presented to achieve cost effective ESD equipment immunity design. The key consideration for obtaining this design is the understanding of the common-mode (CM) ESD current path. Two primary factors contributing these problems are available physical space and available electromagnetic spectrum. Due to the close proximity of platforms and equipment, close coordination is necessary for the effective and efficient utilization of the electromagnetic spectrum. While the US Navy was forced by necessity to deal with global spectrum management considerations, national and international implications of spectrum usage are becoming more prevalent in other governments around the world. As international travel and trade have grown and flourished, certain conventions or conferences evolved to cooperation for the mutual of all parties concerned. Cooperative use of the electromagnetic spectrum via the International telecommunications Union (ITU) is an example. The demands on spectrum usage are going to be much more dynamic, and require the participation and cooperation of all nations and all entities, departments, and agencies within these particular nations. Automated spectrum management systems will be required to handle the tasks of frequency allocation, frequency assignment, frequency allotment, etc., in a dynamic fashion to control and reduce electromagnetic interference. These emissions were found to cause degradation to reception in the automobile's entertainment radio. Further study revealed that the emissions were the result of common mode current transients brought about by the imbalance in the outputs of the bus differential drivers. The degree of imbalance was found to be affected by a number of parameters including the offset voltage (voltage drop) between modules communicating on the bus. A simple SABER model of the differential driver circuit and load is used to estimate the radiated emissions from the multiplex bus wiring due to voltage offset between two communicating modules. The heatsink geometry is usually driven by the thermal requirements in conjunction with the device packaging needs. As the processor speeds increase the die power dissipation also increases, leading to an increase in the preferred heatsink size.
