Participants were undergraduate students aged 18 to 29 years with self-reported allergies (N = 79), asthma (N = 79), and with no history of a chronic illness (N = 79). Participants completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and the SF-36 Health Survey Questionnaire as self-report measures of depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms, and HRQOL, respectively. A series of ANCOVAs (analysis of covariance; allergies vs asthma vs healthy controls) was conducted to examine differences between the groups. The results of the current examination suggest that AYAs with allergies are indeed at risk for experiencing higher rates of depressive and anxious symptoms and poorer HRQOL than healthy AYAs. Furthermore, they are experiencing psychosocial concerns o...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"21 1","pages":"288-294"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83499099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The media can play an important role both in framing allergy issues for the general public and in the policy-making process. As such, an exploration of media representations can provide valuable insight that can inform policy and communication strategies. The authors conducted a content analysis of Canadian newspaper articles to elicit information about the portrayal of laws and policies to address food allergy and anaphylaxis. The authors gathered information on types of policies, support or evidence provided for policies, and whether the overall theme of an article was in support or opposition to a policy. Results indicated that, in general, the media portrayed laws and/or policy proposals to address food allergy-related issues in a supportive manner, but policies that limit individual choice, such as allergy-related food bans, drew more criticism and debate.","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"137 1","pages":"282-287"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77081549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of EIB. EIB is caused by transient narrowing of the airways during or most often after exercise and indicates airway hyperresponsiveness. EIB is an important cause of exercise limitation in children. However, the diagnosis of EIB can be challenging because symptoms poorly predict the presence of EIB. Bronchial challenges, such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing, are required to document EIB. The severity of EIB is worsened by exposure to inhalational toxicants such as chlorine in pools and air pollution. In most children, EIB can be effectively prevented by both nonpharmacological means and medications. Educating the child, his/her family, and supervising adults about asthma triggers and management is important. Prompt recognition and treatment of an asthma attack associated with exercise is critical; bronchodilators should be on the sid...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"143 1","pages":"246-252"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79673169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this inquiry was to determine if environmental remediation programs for urban exposures are effective. Research articles relevant to this topic were obtained by conducting a literature search of the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed Plus, and Google Scholar databases. Search terms included combinations of asthma, environmental remediation, environmental triggers, environmental interventions, urban, and allergies. Out of 27 articles retrieved, 14 meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria were retained. When considered together, it appears that multiple-trigger environmental remediation programs are more effective than single- trigger programs in reducing asthma morbidity. To produce the best outcome, these programs should be tailored to a child’s specific sensitization and exposure. Asthma educators play a role in allergen remediation p...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"1 1","pages":"295-305"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89646082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
