Effective patient education is a key component of asthma management. The National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) promotes “optimal asthma management and quality of life by advancing excellence in asthma education through the Certified Asthma Educator process.” Methods: Following completion of the asthma educator certification examination, applicants were invited to participate in a voluntary, anonymous Web-based survey. The survey was developed and approved by the Executive and Research Committees of the NAECB, with the objective of reviewing the experience of applicants seeking initial certification and of those seeking recertification. Results: Completed surveys were obtained from 988 applicants. Seventy-six percent of respondents were first-t...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"25 1","pages":"78-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85368311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of asthma, the most desirable biomarkers measure airflow obstruction caused by inflammation. Although many biomarkers have been proposed to assist in the diagnosis of asthma and to indicate the degree of disease severity or responsiveness to treatment, few are noninvasive, inexpensive, or measure clinically important aspects of disease activity. Currently, spirometry is the only established biomarker used to confirm the diagnosis and determine lung health. However, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s Expert Panel characterizes other biomarkers of particular interest in asthma. This review will compare and contrast spirometry (something old) with one of the newly proposed biomarkers–fractional exhaled nitric acid (something new)–with respect to what aspects of asthma they propose to measure, what they do measure, and what sources of systematic and random error arise in ...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"4 1","pages":"64-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90430439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Response to bronchodilator also helps in diagnosing the disease and assessing control. Guidelines and standards are available to help perform and interpret spirometry and response to bronchodilator tests. These guidelines come from the American Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program—Expert Panel Report-3, and the American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines. The objective measurements, especially in the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), and the FEV1/FVC, enable proper management and provide continuing assessment to check the effectiveness of therapy and to follow the disease over time.","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"229 1","pages":"73-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79692146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Families must devise risk reduction techniques as they run repeated surveillance to minimize potential food allergen triggers. Monitoring of signs/symptoms of allergic reactions, handling serious medication needs, and planning ahead for a potential emergency due to an accidental exposure can be arduous responsibilities. This diagnosis has psychological, social, practical, and logistical implications to a family and subsequently the community surrounding the patient. Often, patients with multiple food allergies and/or coexisting atopic conditions must interact with several medical specialists to obtain comprehensive diagnosis and management plans. Patient education, case management, and mentoring are essential in promoting compliance and supporting family efforts. It is also critical that the dignity and autonomy of the family be respected during the diagnos...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"45 1","pages":"146-161"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86249409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even those with mild asthma can experience a life-threatening event, and nearly 55% of adults with asthma have poor disease control. Asthma self-management (ASM) training provides instruction on desired medication, monitoring, and trigger avoidance behaviors. Together, these ASM “best practices” are strongly linked to enhanced asthma control and reduced attacks. Certification as an asthma educator (AE-Cs) indicates that the certificant possesses expert knowledge of these 3 critical elements of ASM training, as well as proficiency in the delivery of programs in diverse populations. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of AE-Cs in comparison to the number of individuals with asthma, the task of providing ASM training often falls on members of the health care team who do not have the same knowledge base as AE-Cs or other asthma specialists, such as experienced respiratory therapists or board-certified allergists.
