The obesity epidemic is a worldwide problem affecting both developed and developing countries. The prevalence of obesity among US children and adolescents has tripled over the past 4 decades, and there is an all-time low in the level of physical activity among children and adolescents. Recent data show that the incidence of asthma has been climbing rapidly as well over these past 4 decades. An increasing body of literature suggests that there is an association between this parallel rise of obesity and asthma incidences. Although the exact nature of this association remains unclear, many investigators have interpreted the data to suggest that obesity both increases the risk of incident asthma and alters prevalent asthma toward a phenotype that is more difficult to control.","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"39 1","pages":"119-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89735220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To determine appropriate components and contents of an online peer support intervention for young adolescents and to evaluate intervention processes, perceived benefits, and satisfaction with the intervention.Methods. Three months of support were provided through synchronous chat, e-mail exchange, instant messaging, and bulletin boards. Online support group sessions were facilitated by trained peer mentors (older youth/young adults with asthma and allergies) and health professionals. Participant use of online options was tracked (eg, log-ons, e-mails, chat minutes). Qualitative data were elicited from peer mentor reports, online support group chat transcripts, project coordinators’ field notes, peer mentor exit interviews, and adolescent telephone interviews.Results. Almost all adolescents were satisfied with this online support intervention. Topics discussed in the support groups were pertinent to their educational and support needs. This article defines treatment with ICS in children and discusses current research findings related to the long-term side effects and safety concerns related to ICS therapy in children with asthma. Major safety concerns associated with long-term treatment with ICS include the potential effect on adrenal function, the inhibition of linear growth and growth velocity, osteoporosis, and ocular disorders. This article describes side effects associated with ICS and implications in pediatric primary care.","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"1 1","pages":"241-245"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89569907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a group-level educational intervention to change knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) in asthma patients. In a baseline study to assess KAP in asthma patients, 797 adults participated. All were invited to participate in this follow-up study about a group-level learning program. A total of 701 (88%) patients attended one of the monthly meetings composed of 60 to 80 patients, where they were educated regarding the nature of the disease, trigger factors, prevention, and inhaler use through a locally customized education tool using audiovisual aids. A short questionnaire to assess changes in KAP was completed by 580 participants (83%). A comparison of responses to baseline was performed using the c2 test. The baseline study revealed lacunae in 4 areas of KAP: awareness of nature of asthma, early signs of exacerbation, compliance with therapy, and preferential inhaler use. In postint...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"31 1","pages":"71-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82884608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
