This article seeks to expand the current debate by identifying ethical arguments in support of regulatory reforms to eliminate the use of human subjects for potency assessments of these therapeutics. Although human subject testing is the best method to assess biological potency, it also exposes subjects to significant risks, risks that ought to be avoided as much as possible. Innovation in in vitro immunoassays will soon provide feasible alternatives to biological assessments. This article argues that the allergology community must now consider eliminating human subjects in standardization and potency assessment methods as an ethical imperative in regulatory reforms. This article aimed to explore the issues pertaining to the parental use of the WAAP for their children with asthma. A qualitative method using focus group discussions was used to gather qualitative data from parents of children with asthma who are on review at primary care clinics in Singapore. Qualitative data analysis based on grounded theory was carried out to identify emergent themes. Parents expressed difficulty in differentiating asthma-related symptoms from early symptoms of an upper-respiratory tract infection. Because of the failure to recognize cough as an asthma-related symptom, they focused more on symptomatic treatment of cough. The present purpose was to conduct a study in conjunction with the 2008 ING Georgia Marathon and Half-Marathon in Atlanta.Methods: The authors conducted an online secure survey in winter 2008 using PsychData, using previously validated questions from other research and national surveys. Data were summarized from participating recreational athletes on sociodemographic attributes; training locations; participant and family member diagnosis of asthma; and participant knowledge and awareness of signs, symptoms, and management.Results: There were 1151 participants (99.4%) who provided informed consent and then answered the survey (more than 10% of initially registered athletes); 7 athletes (0.6%) did not consent. Secondhand smoke (SHS) exacerbates asthma symptoms and attacks. Parental smoking is likely the most common and recurring source of SHS exposure among children. School-based asthma management programs can play a major role in educating students and their families about how to reduce, eliminate, and cope with SHS exposure. Between January 2007 and May 2008, a total of 121 middle and 248 elementary school students who participated in school-based asthma management programs in elementary school completed pretest and posttest surveys assessing asthma behaviors and management difficulties. Subgroups of 40 middle and 54 elementary school students participated in 15 focus groups. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent sample t tests.
