It is estimated that 15% to 25% of the US population are affected at some time in their lives with urticaria and that 33% of all urticaria cases are considered to be chronic. Although acute urticaria is generally benign and self-limiting, serious medical illness may occur with CU. The incidence of CU is estimated to be as high as 5% in the general population and greater than 10% when surveying allergy and dermatology patients. CU is an episodic, pruritic disorder in which 45% to 90% of patients will not have an identifiable cause and occurs 4 times more often in females than males. The average disease duration of CU is between 2 and 5 years, and its typical onset is in the third to fourth decade of life. CU is thought to have the most impact on quality of life than any other allergic disease. This article will provide a clinical update and r...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"49 1","pages":"305-309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76212943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article reviews the existing literature to determine the type and quality of evidence available to determine an association between acetaminophen or paracetamol use and asthma in children. Seven studies that specifically reviewed data in the pediatric population as it related to acetaminophen or paracetamol use with the diagnosis of asthma were included in this review, all of which show some potential for association of acetaminophen and asthma in children. The questionnaires used in these studies stemmed from the ISAAC study and were modified to meet the needs of the population and the study endpoints. A variation of this questionnaire was used to ask about demographic, medication use, and possible risk factors for asthma. In most studies, parents were asked to recall this information over periods of time ranging from months to up to 6 years. This article describes components of the Head-off Environmental Asthma in Louisiana (HEAL), phase II project, a collaboration between community and medical facilities for children with asthma in New Orleans. HEAL phase II extends and builds on the lessons learned from HEAL I, a post-Katrina research project, an observational study directed by Tulane University Health Sciences Center and the New Orleans Department of Health. HEAL phase II offers an opportunity to understand, from a health system’s perspective, how factors associated with the health care setting, patient-family, health care provider, asthma education, and community work together to create optimal conditions that support pediatric asthma care in New Orleans. In this context, this article will discuss factors contributing to health disparities in asthma; the need for a mul...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"52 1","pages":"209-216"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83874869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Insufficient sleep has been associated with worse physical and mental health outcomes, and it is known to affect work performance and ability to accomplish necessary tasks. While some research has looked at the sleep of caregivers of loved ones with chronic illness and found that they experience poorer sleep, little is known about the impact of caring for a child with asthma on the caregiver's sleep and the ways in which their sleep may be affected. Community Action Against Asthma, a community-based participatory research partnership, conducted interviews with semistructured and open-ended questions with 40 caregivers of children with asthma who live in Detroit. Findings showed that caregivers regularly experience poor quality sleep because of sleeping lightly in order to listen for the child's symptoms, wake multiple times to check on the child because of worry, and provide care for child when he or she experiences symptoms in the middle of the night. Results of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale indicate that 12.5% of caregivers received a score of 16 or more, the score on the scale used to indicate likely presence of a sleep disorder, and 42.5% had a score of 10 or more, indicating excessive sleepiness. Sleep disturbance in caregivers is an underrecognized consequence of childhood asthma, with implications for providers caring for children with asthma.</p>","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"4 5","pages":"217-225"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/2150129713478635","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32832651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
