Improving the quality of care provided to patients with pulmonary disorders is imperative, but properly performed and correctly interpreted spirometry is typically missing in primary care. There are increasing calls for widespread training efforts to mitigate this deficiency. This article describes why spirometry is needed in primary care and how it is performed and evaluated. Data Sources. The latest spirometry recommendations from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease; the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society; the American College of Physicians; the American College of Chest Physicians; and the US Preventive Services Task Force were consulted. Conclusions. Using spirometry to evaluate lung function is one of the simplest, most common pulmonary function tests. Nurse practitioners (NPs) will undoubtedly encounter these patients in their practice, and having comprehensive knowledge about spirometry will be a grea...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"31 1","pages":"282-289"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86487087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess the theoretical and practical knowledge of health care providers (HCPs) in relation to the use of metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) and spacer devices. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, among 52 HCPs using a stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to assess theoretical knowledge; practical knowledge was assessed by direct demonstration of the use of an MDI and a spacer device. Results. Among the participants, 57% were female. The majority provided education to their patients (92%). Of the HCPs, 36.5% completed the demonstration of holding the spacer with a mask and MDI together and then shaking well 4 to 5 times, 78.8% completed the demonstration of cap removal, 15.4% completed the demonstration of checking for any foreign body in the spacer, 78.8% completed the demonstration of holding the device properly, 69.2% completed the demonstration of inhaling slowly and deeply, 55.8% completed the demonstration of maintaining the seal f...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"8 1","pages":"261-265"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86507939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, they provide a prescription for daily self-management. The objective of this study was to evaluate caregivers’ perception of the value and practical usage of a color-coded wallet WAAP compared to a full-page, black/white plan. Both WAAPs are given at every appointment with education for use. A survey regarding both WAAPs was completed by caregivers of children seen in a pediatric asthma clinic. Surveys included twenty-three multiple choice and two open-ended questions. A total of 32 surveys were completed. Ninety-seven percent and 90% of parents reported the full-page and wallet WAAP as extremely or somewhat useful, respectively. Despite instruction, only 19% of caregivers reported showing a WAAP to their pharmacy, even with 90% reporting they carried the wallet WAAP in their purse/wallet. The inadequate provision of allergy services in the United Kingdom is attributed, in part, to poor undergraduate teaching of the subject. We ascertained the level of medical student knowledge about allergy, an extremely common disease, and congenital heart disease, an important yet rare condition, to see if the focus of medical student teaching was correctly matched to disease burden within the general population. Methods. An online quiz was designed consisting of 10 questions on common allergy problems and 10 questions on congenital heart disease to be taken by medical students. Results. Two hundred and fourteen respondents took the quiz, the majority (78.5%) of who were clinical medical students. There was a significant difference between the mean scores for the allergy (µ = 28.7%, standard deviation = 15.5) and congenital heart disease (µ = 40.1%, standard deviation = 21.3) sections; t(213) = −6.78, P < .0001.
