Education is widely recognized as a valuable contribution to asthma management. Asthma’s high incidence in urban areas and the documented challenges that poor urban families face in managing asthma make effective education particularly important. However, its potential is undercut when the educational content is not relevant to learners’ experiences with, and beliefs about, asthma. This article focuses on urban adolescents’ understandings of asthma with the goal of identifying directions for more effective and relevant asthma education. Method. This qualitative study employed a culturally relevant stance with the goal of accessing participants’ beliefs and theories about asthma and asthma management. Ongoing focus group meetings with urban adolescents were used as well as semistructured one-on-one interviews.Findings. Data demonstrated that participants understood asthma triggers and symptoms. Data trends also identified participants’ belief that asthma is a condition that cannot be controlled, a view that conflicts with asthma therapy goals. Discussions. Because participants’ understandings were grounded in their experiential knowledge, top-down, information-focused education is unlikely to be effective in changing participants’ beliefs. These findings highlight the necessity for educational approaches that assess what learners already know about asthma, their experiences with the condition, and the understandings they have formulated about asthma. Educators can then build on learners’ knowledge in ways that effectively teach important information about this complex condition.","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"8 1","pages":"103-111"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81772805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One in 7 children in the United States is diagnosed with asthma, the leading cause of chronic childhood disease. Although a manageable condition when recommended medication regimens are followed and environmental control measures implemented, asthma remains the third most common reason for hospitalization among non-newborn hospital stays. As the primary health care home to a fifth of all low-income children who are especially vulnerable to asthma, federally qualified health centers play a critical role in providing comprehensive and preventive asthma care to their pediatric patients. Many health centers rely on the asthma education and counseling services of traditional and nontraditional providers, such as clinicians and community health workers, who may or may not be certified as asthma educators, as essential elements of asthma management and control. Asthma counselors are particularly valuable for patient home assessments and tailored education and counseling that are recommended component...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"49 1","pages":"112-122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83760409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To determine the factor structure of the Illness Intrusiveness Rating Scale in young adults with only allergies versus those with both allergies and asthma to evaluate the domains of impairment associated with these 2 chronic health conditions. Method. A total of 454 young adults with allergies (n = 255) or asthma + allergies (n = 199) between the ages of 18 and 25 (mean = 19.39, standard deviation = 1.34) completed the study questionnaire as a part of a larger study of the psychosocial adjustment of young adults with a chronic health condition. Results. A 3-factor structure (Identity, Intimacy, and Relationships and Personal Development) of the Illness Intrusiveness Rating Scale had better fit than a 1-factor structure. Several modifications to the original 3-factor model improved the fit within this population. Conclusions. The 3-factor model was shown to be effective within young adults with allergies and asthma + allergies with some modifications. Focus groups were conducted with 22 adults living in metropolitan and regional New South Wales, Australia. Key findings were that the perceived stigma of asthma, the need for social support, and the need for “asthma-friendly general practitioners” concerned participants more than formal self-management procedures such as written Asthma Action Plans and medication regimes. Social cognitive theory was used to explain the fluid relationship between persons with asthma, their environment, and their behavior in relation to self-management strategies and in identifying patient-centered approaches. This qualitative research suggests that asthma is viewed as a specific, individualized condition best managed from the perspective of patients’ disease experience and environmental context and not one that is appropriately represented by collective, generic ...","PeriodicalId":15244,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators","volume":"9 8 1","pages":"49-56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90581978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
