The results suggest that it is possible to understand the amount of similarity between artifacts as an indirect measure of the student social network. These findings imply that it is possible to uncover the classroom social network using only the source code produced by the students. The proposed method may be used as an instrument for considering and applying social techniques to improve student learning. This research is the first step in redefining the role of plagiarism detection in the programming assessment process as an effective learning intervention tool as opposed to a simple disciplinary procedure.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130998850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework discusses on the possible employability skills as required for an entry level engineer in Malaysia based on many other earlier studies. A set of questionnaires was later developed to gauge this model from the perspective of Malaysian employers from engineering sectors. Based on the results obtained, this paper will discuss, among others, the preferred entry-level employability skills as valued by employers when hiring fresh engineering graduates. The data was collected from September to December 2009 through face-to-face and telephone interviews with employers from Kelang Valley area, the main industrial area in Malaysia. Five hundreds employers were approached, and of this, three hundreds were successfully interviewed. The interviews were only carried out with high ranking officers, in this case; Head of Division or higher to assure accurate results. The questionnaires comprise ten (10) main employability skills as described in MEES. A “multi-attribute value technique” and statistical methods were used for data analysis. The findings suggested that the employers perceived employability skills as “required” with an average rating score of 4.06 out of 5.00. The most required skill is “communication skills” while the least required is “engineering system approach”. However, there are differences in the priorities of employability skills by the four different categories of industries considered in this study. The framework and the findings presented perhaps can be used as guidance for the employers in their recruitment exercise. The findings could also be helpful in guiding the education providers, trainers, career advisors and the likes in increasing the employability skills of engineering fresh graduates.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132243389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The majority of barriers are related to the challenging issue concerning the integration of e-learning into universities. Hence, it is deemed relevant to understand whether different stakeholders in HEIs tend to embrace or ostracize e-learning for their work. This study investigates the extent to which the HEIs associated with the science of electricity in Turkey are ready for e-learning. It also examines two factors that presumably affect the perceptions of academic staff on e-learning: first, the degree to which teachers believe that e-learning would be free of effort and would enhance their teaching; second, whether teachers need training on e-learning before embarking on it. To address these issues, a web-based survey was distributed to 417 programs in 360 HEIs in Turkey. More than 1206 active academic staff were invited to participate in the survey with 289 answering all the questions and 53 some of them. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed. Overall, the findings indicate that the academic staff in the HEI associated with the subject of electricity in Turkey generally show positive experiences, confidences and attitudes towards e-learning. In spite of the fact that their readiness seems to be sufficient, their attitudes towards e-learning must be strengthened in order to facilitate effective adoption of e-learning.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114701440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main reason is that animation preparation is too time consuming. A more technical reason is that when a particular data structure is encoded into an animation, it does not have the flexibility often needed in a classroom setting. There is also a pedagogical reason: a number of prior studies have found that using algorithm visualization in a classroom had no significant effect on student's performance. We believe that the Tablet PC, empowered by digital ink, will challenge the current boundaries imposed upon algorithm animation. One of the potential advantages of this new technology is that it allows the expression and exchange of ideas in an interactive environment using sketch based interfaces. In this paper we discuss teaching and learning Tablet PC based environment in which students using a stylus would draw a particular instance of a data structure and then invoke an algorithm to animate over this data structure. A completely natural way of drawing using a digital pen will generate a data structure model, which (once it is checked for correctness) will serve as a basis for execution of various computational algorithms.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128643408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strangely, time management have received a great attention in office automation software, like Project management tools, agendas, to-do lists etc, but has been totally forgot in what nowadays is the absolute dominator of human-computer interactions, i.e. social networks, and even in e-learning system. In this paper, we will present the main characteristics of services like meeting organization, shared agendas, shared calendars, task management and to-do lists services added to our virtual community platform, used in educational settings. They are not just a customization of existing similar services: the fact of being integrated and available inside the virtual community gives them many new possibilities of usage and usefulness for end-users. The scope of the virtual community and its well defined mission for participants (a classroom, a research group, a meeting, a secretariat etc) maximizes the benefits obtainable from the usage of these services inside the community with the other members. In the paper, these aspects will be presented together with the theoretical aspects related to time-based interaction among virtual communities. Some of these services will be presented in the details of their structure and in the great potential that could be expressed when used as a support to the virtual community life, like for example the task-list service, a quite sophisticated, CPM (critical path method)-compatible planner resembling project management software and used to plan, monitor and manage the activities of community members. The results of early experimentations on virtual learning communities composed by teachers, students and tutors will be illustrated","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123858964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
