The usage of this advanced social media enables educators or students to build personal learning environments that include invited peers, tutors or educators, aggregated or recommended resources, as well as online experiments and relevant simulation or data analysis services. The services and the experiments are accessible through simple widgets that can easily be implemented and that can intercommunicate with lightweight protocols such as RSS feeds. The proposed approach is illustrated with services supporting a control course taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127599161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Literature used traditional statistical methods and qualitative techniques to identify factors that affect student retention up most and predict their persistence. In this paper we developed two neural network models using a feed-forward backpropagation network to predict retention for students in science and engineering fields. The first model is used to predict incoming freshmen retention and identify correlated pre-college factors. The second model is to classify freshmen groups into three classes: at-risk, intermediate, and advanced students. With total of 338 samples used, 70.1% of students classified correctly.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115940567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The finalized EU-funded project PeTEX-Platform for e-Learning and Telemetric Experimentation has developed a prototype of an e-learning platform based on Moodle for the design and implementation of educational and training programs in the field of manufacturing engineering. The principle goal of this project was to establish individual and group oriented learning for different target groups like students and professional workers within a platform-system able to sustain a multi-country learning community. Hence, an educational model was designed which integrates the tele-operated experimentation platform with teaching content and learning activities in order to support a successful learning walkthrough for different target groups.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131239947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It aims to characterize piezoelectric devices using electric network theory and to complement the instruction of Thévenin's Theorem in classes about electric circuits. The employed approach allows us to outline the most important concepts of operation of the piezoelectric transducers. The manner for obtaining the equivalent electric circuit and a simple experimental procedure are presented. The work shows that Thévenin's Theorem, commonly taught in electric circuits classes, can be used for evaluating of piezoelectric devices. The methodology employed in this work facilitates the comprehension of the physical principles of the piezoelectric elements.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"289 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114403503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As an education pattern, e-learning systems have become more and more popular. It commonly refers to teaching efforts propagated through the use of computers in a bid to impart knowledge in a non traditional classroom environment. As a prerequisite for an effective development of e-learning systems, it is important to have certain knowledge about users' opinions and build an evaluation regarding them. Hence, an opinion mining method has been applied in this paper for the sake of helping the developers to improve and promote the quality of relevant services. Actually, three feature selection methods MI (Mutual Information), IG (Information Gain), and CHI statistics (CHI) have been investigated and advanced along with our proper HMM and SVM-based hybrid learning method. In fact, the experimental results have indicated that opinion mining becomes more difficult and challenging when performed for e-learning blogs. Moreover, we attempt to demonstrate that IG performs the best potential for sentimental terms selection and exhibits the best performance for sentiment classification.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123840741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the globalization of economy, engineering products are manufactured by integrating resources from many countries all over the world. Engineering projects are implemented by the people with different cultural background. Programs of higher engineering education seem to be more specialized and more comprehensive. Meanwhile, each program is getting more and more cross disciplinary based. The trend of these changes continuous forward and the changes are getting more and more rapidly so that higher institutions find more difficult to cope with these changes than before. It becomes very important to improve the agility of engineering education in order to keep its capability of competition in education market. According to the experiences in manufacturing industries, the agility is simply considered as the ability of quick responsiveness at low costs. In this paper, based on the successful implementation in manufacturing industries, virtual organization is introduced to improve the agility of engineering education. A two-dimension model is developed to illustrate how different programs are built on different disciplines by means of virtual organization. In this model all the disciplines in an institution are considered as a set of real organizations in real dimension and all the programs are considered as a set of virtual organizations in virtual dimension. Furthermore, the concepts of modularization and postponement are employed in curriculum development to facilitate the implementation of virtual organization in higher engineering education and then to combine the advantages of scale and scope for teaching administration.","PeriodicalId":146973,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116974676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
