In the Spanish learning context, the first and most common prepositions to be taught in Secondary Education are the units in, on, at. However, the fact that the teaching of these prepositions comes at an early stage does not mean that they are easy to learn. In fact, teaching materials have typically assumed that prepositions are used in a non-systematic way, thus dealing with them from a collocational perspective. Against that position, research in the field of Cognitive Linguistics (henceforth CL) has demonstrated that only a small minority of prepositional uses are thoroughly idiomatic. According to this discipline, there exist two positions in relation to prepositional meaning, namely monosemy and polysemy. Following the latter perspective, Navarro i Ferrando (1998) has developed a theoretical model in which the meanings of the prepositions in, on and at can be described by radial networks containing spatial, force-dynamic and functional semantic elements. In the present study, the effectiveness of this model in teaching the prepositions in, on, at has been tested. For this purpose, an experiment has been designed in which two groups of 4th-year ESO are taught the target prepositions following two different approaches: CL-based and traditional, respectively. Thus, it is hypothesised that, after the study, the group following the CL approach will present a higher improvement in their command of the target prepositions than the group taught by means of a traditional approach. The overall results obtained in the experiment corroborate the hypothesis stated above, thus proving the advantages that a field such as CL can offer to the sphere of language teaching. {"title":"La eficacia cultural en la comunicación de las ONGD: campaña #CierraUnicef","authors":"Leyre Navarrete Emmanuel","doi":"10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.28","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.28","url":null,"abstract":"Ante la diversidad y pluralidad de comunicaciones por parte de las ONGD hoy en dia, es importante recordar la particularidad del tercer sector y la responsabilidad de estas organizaciones como interlocutores sociales que fomenten la sensibilizacion de la ciudadania, su educacion, la lucha por la justicia social y contra las relaciones de poder, tanto local como globalmente. Tratandose de actores con responsabilidad social ante la ciudadania, es necesario que sus discursos esten guiados por dichos valores sin caer en la contradiccion de que la necesidad recaudatoria suponga perpetuar estereotipos y situaciones generadoras de desigualdad que ellas mismas luchan por eliminar. Habiendo encarnado un aparente giro en los discursos tradicionales de las ONGD, la campana #CierraUnicef se analiza en este articulo con una mirada constructiva, utilizando como metodo de analisis el decalogo del Vademecum para una Informacion Internacional Responsable, del proyecto DEVREPORTER, con el objetivo de localizar posibles elementos generadores de desigualdad en las relaciones de cooperacion, asi como avances positivos en dicha direccion que faciliten el camino hacia una comunicacion desde las ONGD mas inclusiva, empoderadora y respetuosa sobre la que seguir construyendo. Para responder a nuestra pregunta nos hemos centrado en el analisis de investigaciones de las autoras Haynes, Nos, Irando y Ferne, entre otras no menos importantes. Asi, a lo largo del texto se podra ver claramente la estrecha relacion entre la filosofia con ninas y ninos y la etica del discurso, que se muestra en la importancia del dialogo, de la busqueda de una comunidad comunicativa ideal y el no perseguir objetivos individuales o estrategicos. Sin embargo, es durante el prerrafaelismo –movimiento artistico desarrollado durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX– cuando empieza a cobrar importancia la naturaleza gracias al simbolismo que adquiere cada especie vegetal representada, un simbolismo que ayudaba a entender el significado de la obra. Este estudio pretende centrar su atencion en la amapola o adormidera, y para ello se analizan dos figuras femeninas de gran relevancia dentro de la pintura decimononica: Ofelia e Isabella. A traves de estos ejemplos, se procura mostrar tanto el simbolismo vegetal hallado en dichas pinturas, como los conocimientos que los prerrafaelitas tenian en otros campos de estudio diferentes a este. {"title":"Teaching apologies through the use of audiovisual materials","authors":"S. García","doi":"10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.22","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.22","url":null,"abstract":"Since Austin’s (1962) classic work How To Do Things With Words there have been numerous studies about the way in which utterances are used as a mean to perform actions. The branch of linguistics that deals with this phenomenon is pragmatics, which emerged in the 1960s as a reaction to Chomsky’s idea that the importance of language lies in the correct use of grammar (MartinezFlor and Uso-Juan 2010). After the elaboration of several models of communicative competence presented by a number of authors such as Canale and Swain (1980), Bachman (1990), and Celce-Murcia (1995, 2007), the idea that pragmatic awareness is necessary in order for speakers to be successful in communication has spread, being one of the most relevant constructs the one introduced by CelceMurcia (2007). Research has been conducted especially on speech acts, such as Leech’s (2014) book The Pragmatics of Politeness, whose taxonomy will be used in this study, and on the use of audiovisual material for teaching purposes. For that reason, we have carried out an analysis on speech acts, and in particular on apologies, in the fiction TV series The Big Bang Theory. Ademas, hemos visto un interes creciente por el programa en el ambito europeo y es aqui donde observamos como las instituciones europeas se involucran y acreditan las habilidades desarrolladas en el curso. Del mismo modo, analizamos este interes entre los ciudadanos de los paises europeos con una muestra de fab lab nodo y participante del programa. Las comunidades de fab labs se encuentran muy fragmentadas; por eso, en Francia, el evento internacional Fab 14+, celebrado en el mes de julio de 2018 con mas de 1200 fab labs procedentes de todo el mundo, intento reunir a todos los actores, no solo para centrarse en la ciencia y en la tecnologia, sino tambien en la ecologia, la solidaridad, la educacion, la movilidad, la energia y la alimentacion. Variables, such as age, gender, mother tongue, and the sociolinguistic context, have been taken into consideration when exploring language attitudes. However, the research on young learners’ attitudes towards languages in English-based schools is scarce. The present paper focuses on young learners’ language attitudes in a high English immersion context in the province of Castello de la Plana, in the Valencian Community, where two official languages coexist, Spanish as the majority language, and Valencian as the minority language. However, English is the leading language of instruction in this international school context. Many studies have been conducted within the framework of language attitudes across ages. However, as far as we know, no studies have accounted for young learners’ attitudes in an English immersion context, such as international schools. Therefore, the present study aims at filling in this research gap by analysing children’s language attitudes in an English immersion school context. The aims of this paper are twofold: in the first place, to analyse the language attitudes towards the three languages under investigation (Spanish, English and Valencian) of multilingual children attending an English immersion school. And, in the second place, to investigate the effect of age on language attitudes. The findings derived from the present study confirm the impact of age on young learners’ language attitudes.
