As a consequence of globalisation and the need of an international and intercultural communication tool (Jenkins, Cogo, and Dewey 2011, Cogo 2012), English has emerged as a lingua franca and English acquisition is in the spotlight. This research aims to understand how English teaching could be improved at school. While different language approaches and methodologies are used, the mother tongue of the learner is not taken into account in English teaching and the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is still used as guideline, not only in Europe but also worldwide (Nakatani 2012). We live in a multilingual world where all languages are in constant contact and identities are blurred, mostly when English has raised as the universal language. Taking this into account, our research focuses on a plurilingual approach to English language teaching in order to improve English learning in primary school based on an understanding of languages from an ecological point of view. Dobre","doi":"10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6035/forumrecerca.2018.23.14","url":null,"abstract":"William Faulkner’s fifth novel, As I Lay Dying (1930) (henceforth AILD) is the author’s tour the force as he delves into the depths of the family sphere and skilfully portrays the complex, almost pathological universe of several individuals. Narrating the vicissitudes which the Bundrens face on their journey to the city of Jefferson, where they are to take the matriarch Addie Bundren’s dead body, the family’s nine-day trip concludes with a ruinous end for almost all of its members. For Darl Bundren, this price is the confinement in an insane asylum. As a consequence, literary criticism has frequently read Darl Bundren as a mentally deranged individual. The aim of this paper is to challenge the label of insane attached to Darl, interpreting him as a traumatized subject instead. Using Contemporary trauma theory as a critical tool, we will bring forward those symptoms which account for Darl suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a state triggered by his participation in WWI. Moreover, we will examine those aspects accounting for the complexity of his trauma, as the maternal abandonment he has been exposed to. Finally, our argumentation will allow us to dismiss the assumption that Darl is a schizophrenic. Para ello hemos utilizado como metodologia, por una parte, el estudio de las dos historias en las versiones de los hermanos Grimm y, por otra parte, se ha recurrido a las investigaciones de autores como Bruno Bettelheim, entre otros. De esta manera, expondremos ideas como las de familia, respeto, cuidado de los mayores o generosidad en estas narraciones. The present article attempts to tackle and solve some of the issues encountered by both teachers and students in the classroom regarding vocabulary knowledge. This article presents a study examining the effects of the Vocabulary Box, Kick Me Activity, and the Vocabulary Survey in 2nd-year ESO1 students, to show if the method of learning words has an impact on the student learning process. Results are based on the final written test, student observation, and student survey. Different methods produced significant variations in achievement scores, and the data-collection instruments showed that students had a preference for the Vocabulary Box and selected the Kick Me Activity as a second choice. This is precisely the fractured linguistic context of the Valencian Community, where the burgeoning role of English in the educational system adds to the asymmetrical bilingual setting in which the autochthonous language is minoritized in its own territory. Therefore, drawing on multilingualism and language attitudes as the theoretical framework, this study provides an interface between both concepts by focusing on the correlation between self-perceived competence and language attitudes in the Valencian multilingual setting by secondary education students. As part of more extensive research examining the correlation between several variables and language attitudes, this paper builds on the previous findings on language attitudes in Catalan-speaking areas. It analyses the impact of self-assessed competence in both the majority and minority languages (Catalan and Spanish) on language attitudes towards the three languages amongst a sample of 62 4thyear ESO students from the Catalan-speaking area of the Valencian Community. From a quantitative approach, this cross-sectional study presents a statistical analysis of the gathered data, searching bivariate correlations to determine the correlation between both variables. It’s HBO». Este eslogan de la HBO revela con contundencia como el canal trata de distanciarse de un modo tradicional de entender la television. Sus series se caracterizan por una calidad que no se pliega a los criterios de exito inmediato; cuando apuestan por una produccion, le conceden tiempo y no la cancelan segun criterios economicos, sino que saben cerrarlas a nivel discursivo. Asi, permiten la experimentacion, el riesgo creativo y construyen una audiencia paciente. Con Los Soprano (David Chase, 1999-2007) y A dos metros bajo tierra (Alan Ball, 2001-2005), mostraron que se podia abordar lo familiar desde esquemas complejos. Con The Wire (David Simon, 2002-2008), mostraron que podia hacerse television sin espectaculo ni sentimentalidad. Seducidos por el exito global de Perdidos (J. J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber, Damon Lindelof, 2004- 2010) de la ABC, la HBO aposto por Juego de tronos (David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, 2011-), que se ha convertido en la serie de mayor popularidad global desde la violencia y el erotismo: al ser un canal de pago, la HBO puede permitirse trascender los limites de la representacion. Esta investigacion pretende estudiar como Juego de tronos, siguiendo la estela de la marca HBO, preparo las condiciones de aparicion de otra serie aun mas trascendente: Westworld (Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, 2016-). Partim de la premissa que la subtitulacio al portugues de contingut audiovisual en forro pot ser una eina beneficiosa en la sensibilitzacio de la poblacio en l’ambit de la cooperacio. En aquest cas, parlem sobre l’abandonament que viuen els ancians i les ancianes a Sao Tome i sobre el risc d’extincio del crioll forro amb tot el que aixo comporta: perdua d’aspectes culturals, desigualtats dels seus parlants respecte als monolingues de portugues, etc. Per tal de portar a terme l’objectiu de la investigacio, es va realitzar una primera entrevista a tres ancians que parlen en crioll forro sobre questions socials i culturals de Sao Tome. Aquest video es va subtitular al portugues i es va mostrar a un grup de persones de diferents edats i professions perque servira de base per reflexionar sobre el que diuen els ancians i quina n’es la percepcio de la poblacio en general.
