The study results suggest that pedagogic lurking is a widespread phenomenon, with some perceiving it as problematic and others as a step towards more active participation. Most interestingly, there does seem to be a lack of appetite for learning analytics software that would allow the close monitoring of student learning engagement and progress. Implications of this study for online learning and teaching are discussed.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115546263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present the development and validation of a serious game that combines autostereoscopy and Natural User Interfaces for dental learning in higher education. The game includes two modes: neutral and real-world background. A comparative study to check different aspects was carried out. A total of 33 dentistry students participated in the study. From the results, the students increased significantly their knowledge about teeth morphology. Most of the students preferred the neutral background for dental learning. The real-world background was identified as being more suitable for leisure activities.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126711493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aiming at addressing this issue, through design, we developed a digital-analogue model playground to help them understand and cope with the socially difficult situations experienced when they go to a physical playground to interact with peers. Based on therapists and parents' insights, we created the model playground with built in collaborative protocols providing immediate feedback to the children in terms of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. Our design artefact was evaluated in a rehabilitation clinic for autistic children and demonstrates promising potential for digital-analogue devices as useful resources training peer social interaction. Our findings document that digital-analogue design devices can facilitate the development of social skills and norms through peer learning activities amongst children with autism.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124641735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a development holds the potential to take learning experiences from the classroom into the real world, but also supports the educational vision of adventure learning and learning through design and creation. This challenges current learning and teaching practices, requiring new pedagogical models and different perspectives on designing learning experiences and appropriate technological tools. This paper discusses the theoretical assumptions and design aspects of developing a toolkit that supports adventure learning. The SmartZoos project aims to design and develop a toolset which allows teachers, but also students, to take an active role in designing location-based games, adventure trails and other challenges (quizzes, assignments, etc.) with personal mobile devices.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128892556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Access to informational data should be characterized through its ease of use, consistency and reliability. Libraries have become target spaces for the deployment of applications for Augmented and Virtual Reality worlds, due to their complexity of information repositories and the associated indexing processes, as well as to its users' profiles (students, professors, librarians) and their access to technology. The current work models interaction in a virtually rendered library aiming to provide the users with an immersive experience of viewing library resources (books) and their metadata. A low-cost, affordable, technical setup is proposed for deployment, consisting of a mobile device and the Google Cardboard VR Headset. With the purpose of further integration, the virtual scene has been rendered using panoramic-based imagery. Complementary to the state-of-the art virtual tours for educational landscapes (museums, classrooms, libraries), such solutions could enhance indoor exploration for informational or marketing purposes.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129025972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kayama, Kozo Okano","doi":"10.1109/ICALT.2017.73","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICALT.2017.73","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents SMart-Learning, which is a set of state machine simulators for developing thinking skills. SMart-Learning handles a variant state machine diagram notation based on UML. The learners of the diagram require various thinking skills such as requirements analysis, concept formation including abstraction for a domain, and modeling conforming to the semantics. Evaluation of their diagrams is crucial in such learning but should not place an unnecessary burden on the learners when they use tools supporting the evaluation. However, usability aspects other than effectiveness of such tools has not received much attention. SMart-Learning provides three simulators to improve learners' skills step by step. Through an evaluation in which five learners use SMart-Learning, the effectiveness, especially usability, is discussed.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128606689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But simply providing students books to read does not tell much about how it actually happens. Blogging after reading serves to present clues to the inquiries: how readers interact with texts, how students grow during the course of self-paced reading, how students make use of a social platform for learning reading, and what problems could be encountered and solved with prompt guidance and support. This study was aimed to investigate how blogging effects successful extensive reading in an EFL tertiary class and then test an extensive reading model with blogging the scaffold at three different developmental phases using structural equation modeling. Results show that learners did follow a three-phase model in an extensive reading program supported by a shared blog to develop a reading habit in English, manifesting a developmental trajectory along which the affective, cognitive and social processes were all exercised in readers.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124576499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenge increases proportionally with the increase of volume of the textual content. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to visualization of textual data that depicts information on a continuum (temporal or spatial) allowing inferences to be made about thematic organization of a document and its structure. Our visualization method—termed ThemeTrack—creates a visual map: delineating key themes and tracking their presence throughout the text, highlighting their variations and relationships. It aims to make the review of textual data more efficient. To assess the viability of the proposed approach, a series of experiments were conducted using graduate-level theses and published articles in the peer-reviewed journals. The applications of the proposed method are discussed and the real-word examples are provided.","PeriodicalId":134966,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124638428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
