The main source of malfunctions is the PMK's electrode which acts linke an antenna. An incident electromagnetic field can couple into the electrode and cause an interference voltage at the PMK's input connector. This signal can be misinterpreted as the electrocardiogram (ECG) of the heart and mislead the PMK to wrong reactions. In current practice it is often assumed that the phase difference between dipole moments does not change the power measured at the GTEM output port. The results from this work disprove this assumption. Results from experiments show a significant change in the measured power when the phase was altered. Simulations using time-domain transmission line method (TLM) performed using the procedures described in standards MIMIC the experimental results and the variation of power magnitude agrees with that of experiments. SuperNECTM was used to produce radiation patterns for different phases which are used to gain an insight into the impact of phase. A commonly used approximation is to treat the interference as additive white Gaussian Noise (AWGN). For pulse modulated interference and impulsive interference, this approximation gives severe underestimations of the BEP. For this issue, a correction factor is proposed in. This impulsiveness correction factor ICF has earlier been investigated for different combinations of pulsed signals. In this work, the ICF is investigated for Class A interference. A modular multi-port network analyzer was developed to evaluate line coupling in a complex environment. The frequency range of interest was lower than 500 kHz however measurement time had to be kept low. Therefore a measurement solution in time domain was selected. The resulting data was to be used for system simulation in time and frequency domains. The set-up for a multi-port network analyzer is described in this paper and is used as an example. The measurement data of this analyzer is of medium quality. Therefore signal analysis is necessary to produce reliable input data for simulations. The main emphasis of this paper is to describe the steps of signal processing from experience. Pre- and final scans are performed to reduce the time for the characterization of the device under test. Emission measurements in time-domain can reduce the measurement time for a single scan up to a factor of 4000. In this paper test procedures for radiated emission measurements are presented. An initial scan is proposed to determine the minimum dwell time that is required to get reproducable measurement results. If the dwell time that is required by the device under test is much smaller than the settling time of the quasi peak detector an enhanced pre- and final scan is proposed. However if the required dwell time is larger than the settling time of the quasi peak a full maximization is proposed. The procedures have been applied in an anechoic chamber in the frequency range 30 MHz -1 GHz. By such measurements the characterization of highly unstationary signals has become available. Therefore an analytical model has been developed allowing the determination of induced voltage into a pacemaker in a magnetic field with low frequencies between 10 Hz and 30 kHz. A distinction between left pectoral unipolar and bipolar pacemaker electrodes has been made here. Furthermore the different positions of a bipolar electrode were taken into consideration. It was found that depending on the position of the bipolar electrodes in a homogeneous magnetic field, major differences of induced voltage occur. The main task of this project is to ascertain the influence of electric conductivity on interference voltage in bipolar electrodes. The measurement circuit has been placed into an original pacemaker case and therefore allowed the comparison between bipolar and unipolar electrodes by only mode switching. The magnetic field has been generated by a Helmholtz coil. Part of the Helmholtz coil system was a model of a human torso filled with saline solution to simulate human tissue. The result of the measurements showed a dependency between electric conductivity and induced voltage. The extensively discussed security factor of bipolar electrodes could be calculated from the above-mentioned measurements.
