Designers can manipulate the edge-based blending function, as well as the geometry of the boundary curves, to design and modify the patch shape. We discuss the derivation of the edge-based blending function, the ease of design and the connection of several patches with G/sup 1/ continuity. We demonstrate its validity by modifying rectangular patches according to its changes.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"40 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114113555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of most importance is the multiresolution shape metric, which measures distances according to image content shape information. Accompanied with it is a feature/non-feature image characterization philosophy. The second effort is the modification of an existing color metric, whose distance computation is dominated by color distribution of images. The third idea concerns the image querying behavior of the general public, so as to propose and design a versatile power metric, which holds the properties of both the shape metric and the color metric, for dealing with various kinds of hand-drawn queries. Finally, after applying the shape metric to video shot boundary detection, a multiresolution scene change detection algorithm is proposed. For now, we have implemented these metrics on a personal computer for two applications. One is for image database management with content-based indexing and the other is for video shot boundary detection. Experiments show that the speed and the accuracy of both image retrieval and scene change detection are quite good.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123981247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper presents a new representation scheme, called a spherical light field, of the plenoptic function, that is based on spheres. While methods using spherical coordinates are thought to require substantially more computation than those using planar or cylindrical coordinates, we show that spheres can also be used efficiently in representing and resampling the flow of light. Our image based rendering algorithm is different from the previous systems, the light field and lumigraph, in that it is an \"object space\" algorithm that can be easily embedded into the traditional polygonal rendering system. Our method is easily accelerated by 3D graphics boards that support the primitive functionality, such as viewing and smooth shading. In addition, we introduce an encoding scheme based on wavelets for compression of the huge data resulting from sampling of the spherical light field. The proposed technique can be easily adapted to compress the light field and lumigraph data, and offers as high compression ratios as the previous methods. Furthermore, it naturally creates a multi resolutional representation of the light flow that can be exploited effectively in the future applications. We show how to access the compressed data efficiently using a modified significance map and an incremental decoding technique, and report experimental results on several test data sets.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127504628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The input to our system, finger actions, originates from a user. Based on this input, we animate the finger actions and display an operated pattern of string figures. A stabilizing procedure is in charge of obtaining a stable state of the string figures. Processing string figures on a computer is difficult, since the string's dynamics are still unknown. Our system uses a set-of-crossings representation method for processing string figures. We employ some local transformations of the string figures to stabilize them. Furthermore, topological characteristics of the string figures can be observed.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"73 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126104864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fiducial tracking is gaining interest as a solution to this problem in video see-through AR because of the availability of digitized real scenes. There are several AR systems using fiducial tracking, but most of them operate in small desktop workspaces. It is difficult to apply them directly to large scale applications. The wide range of work distance and non-uniform lighting conditions make fiducial detection very difficult. Adding new fiducials requires off-line processing for measuring positions of new fiducials. We propose a fast and robust fiducial detection procedure with carefully designed color fiducials and noise analysis of digitized images. We also present a dynamic workspace extension method with on-line position determination of unknown features. We present a framework for applying AR to large scale applications.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128990730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal to create photo-realistic images has lead to the development of completely new software techniques for dealing with the inherent geometric and optical complexity of real world scenes. This paper gives an overview of advanced algorithms for photo-realistic rendering and in particular discusses hierarchical techniques for global illumination computations.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129243338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first describe the state of the art, then focus on the particular approach taken at the University of Pennsylvania with the Jack system. Various aspects of real-time virtual humans are considered, such as their appearance and motion, interactive control, autonomous actions, gestures, attention, locomotion and multiple individuals. The underlying architecture consists of a sense-control-act structure that permits reactive behaviors to be locally adaptive to the environment, and a PaT-Net (parallel transition network) parallel-finite-state machine controller that can be used to drive virtual humans through complex tasks. We then argue for a deep connection between language and animation and describe current efforts in linking them through two systems: the Jack Presenter and the JackMOO extension to lambdaMOO. Finally, we outline a parameterized action representation for mediating between language instructions and animated actions.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128021350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It allows the illumination to be changed interactively without knowing any geometrical information (e.g. depth or surface normal) of the scene, but the resulting images are physically correct. The scene is first sampled from different view points and under different illuminations. By treating each pixel on the image plane as a surface element, the sampled images are used to measure the apparent BRDF of each surface element. Two compression schemes, spherical harmonics and discrete cosine transform, are proposed to compress the tabular BRDF data. Whenever the user changes the illumination a certain number of views are reconstructed. The correct user perspective view is then displayed using the standard texture mapping hardware. Hence, the intensity, the type and the number of the light sources can be manipulated interactively.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"711 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133016327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
