The previous method, using tetrahedral-cell subdivision, often generates multiple critical points in a hexahedral cell, and this causes several defects in flow visualization. First, we propose a new criterion for differences between interpolation functions, and investigate the reasons for the generation of multiple critical points in a hexahedral cell. Next, to prevent the generation of multiple critical points, we propose an improved method using both tetrahedral-cell subdivision and a trilinear interpolation function. Our method finds critical points by using a linear interpolation function, and, when multiple critical points are found in a hexahedral cell, a numerical integration scheme (Newton's method) is applied and a more precise position is calculated. We apply our approach to several sets of velocity data and evaluate it in several ways.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"283 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122960488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on image selection, the first step in the process of reconstruction of the 3D structure of a specimen from its projections. Noise from a variety of sources makes automatic detection of particle positions a difficult task. New image acquisition devices and modern electron microscopy methods require the processing and rendering of very large images (50-100 million pixels). We describe techniques for processing large images, algorithms for detecting particle positions on compressed images using the crosspoint method, and methods for position refinement. EMMA, an interactive visualization environment for experimenting with particle identification methods is presented.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126872140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The triangulation of the terrain is generated incrementally on-the-fly during the rendering time. We show that since the view changes smoothly only a few incremental modifications are required to update the triangulation to a new view. The resulting triangles form a multiresolution Delaunay triangulation which satisfies a predetermined view-dependent error tolerance. The presented method provides a guaranteed quality mesh since it has control over the global geometric approximation error of the multiresolution view-dependent triangulation.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116350962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A runtime environment and authoring tools for interactive scenarios have been designed and implemented. We adopt a scenario-based representation to unfold a story in the virtual environment. A producer can make Virtual Stage applications which reflect his/her own scenario. While singing-along to the song played by Virtual Stage, the participants use their body to interact with virtual characters which behave intelligently in the virtual environment. The scenario written via authoring tools describes the interaction between the participant and virtual characters. The system analyzes video images of the participant to extract participant-related data, then the video image is composed into the rendered scene of a virtual environment.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113968725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we describe a hierarchical model of body actions based on fine-grained action primitives. The associated recognition algorithm allows on-the-fly identification of simultaneous actions. Measurements highlight robustness to participants' variability and high detection rates when using the full potential of the action model. An example illustrates an interaction with a virtual character driven by the participant's action recognition.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132184529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first apply a uniform space subdivision for constructing the adaptively subdivided volume. Then we merge coherent uniform blocks to generate adaptive-sized blocks that are efficient for leaping space. To accomplish this, an efficient block merging algorithm based on a boundary following and scan-filling strategy is proposed. Experimental results show that our fast volume rendering scheme is superior to other schemes in constructing a data structure for fast rendering; due to its simple construction approach, construction speed is more than three times faster than a hierarchical data structure, the octree. A 25% to 70% performance gain in rendering time over the octree is also exhibited. The additional advantages of our scheme are a stable acceleration for animation and an associativity with a compression-based volume rendering.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124072454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this system, the analysis results can be expressed in various ways by interactive operations: corresponding to the user's tentative demands, multiple physical quantities are displayed on the same screen simultaneously; for transient phenomena, animation is available; and distributed vectors and multi-layer scalar data can be observed in stereo vision. By employing the proposed system structure, analysts can easily and intuitively grasp inter-object and intra-object relationships, complicated deformations and changes of physical quantities through time in the objects.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132299577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It does not trade-off the image quality for the rendering speed. However, it still falls short of interactive manipulation of volume data, mainly due to the ray-by-ray volume access pattern and the long ray path in the transparent regions. In this paper, we present an object-order template-based volume rendering method that uses run-length encoding to enable the skipping of highly transparent regions. We present three algorithms, one for each principal axis direction. By combining the advantages of object-order volume traversal and run-length encoded volumes, the algorithms achieve high-quality rendering in a much shorter time than the original template-based volume rendering.","PeriodicalId":128371,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings The Fifth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116906372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
