{"title":"Application of the 6-SNP elevated LDL-cholesterol polygenic risk score in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia phenotype from an Argentine population.","authors":"Virginia Bañares, Javier Martini, Graciela López, Pablo Corral, Laura Schreier","doi":"10.24875/GMM.M24000918","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24875/GMM.M24000918","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>LDL-cholesterol greater than 190 mg/dL indicates severe hypercholesterolemia (HS) of monogenic and/or polygenic origin. Genetic risk scores (GRS) evaluate potential polygenic causes.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>we applied a GRS of 6-SNP (GRS-6) in HS individuals.</p><p><strong>Material and methods: </strong>69 subjects from the Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HF) Detection registry in Argentina (Da Vinci).</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>with 44 individuals with HF-phenotype, not carriers of genetic variants that indicate a monogenic origin (HF/M-) and 26 controls, the GRS-6 cut-off value was established, > 0.76, sensitivity 0.59, specificity 0.69. 15/44(34 %) HF/M- presented GRS-6+. The mean GRS-6 values in HF/M-, HF/M+ and controls were 0.72 ± 0.17, 0.66 ± 0.17, and 0.70 ± 0.13 respectively (p = 0.43). There were no significant differences in cholesterol values, or in the clinical score, between cases with positive vs negative GRS-6. However, the cost of some of the equipment necessary for its evaluation could be prohibitive for its generalized use in some settings.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>The purpose of the present study was to compare two handheld dynamometers to evaluate the measure of concordance between the measurements. Material and methods The study was conducted in the outpatient Geriatrics clinics where 120 community-dwelling participants aged 60 years and more were evaluated using two devices: the JAMAR<sup>®</sup> Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer and the digital hand dynamometer CAMRY<sup>®</sup> EH101.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>We observed a positive correlation between the two devices for dominant hand (DH) Pearson r 0.974 (p < 0.001) and a Spearman ρ 0.973 (p < 0.001) for non-dominant hand (NDH) Lin's coefficient for the DH was 0.98 (p < 0.001) and for the NDH 0.97 (p < 0.001). It is estimated that there are 65 million people affected by this entity, although other figures speak of 200 million.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To characterize the population affected by long COVID in Mexico.</p><p><strong>Material and methods: </strong>Patients older than 18 years who agreed to answer an online survey and who met the criteria for long COVID were included.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Data from 203 subjects were included, with 138 (68.0%) being found to be females, and average age to be 41.8 years; 29.6% had severe disease, and 70.4%, mild to moderate disease; 89.7% had received prior COVID-19 vaccination: 6.9% had received one dose; 31.5%, two doses; and 51.2%, three or more doses. The main risk factors were diabetes, overweight or obesity, and hypertension. This work reports, based on data requested from the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), the types of institutions that use animals for research and how many of these have an ethics committee. Research centres, colleges, hospitals, national institutes, technical colleges, and public universities are the types of institutions that report using animals for experimentation. Only 54% of institutions have ethics committees. Mexican institutions from 2015 to 2021 used a total of 2,112,786 animals. Mammals are the most widely used animal group. The scientific purposes for using animals depend on the type of institution that uses them. From the patients, sociodemographic data, clinical history and pharmacological treatments were obtained. From the physicians, sociodemographic and academic information were collected.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Mean age of the patients was 63 ± 11 years and 31.7% were prescribed NSAIDs. When compare exposed versus non-exposed to NSAIDs, being in uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled hypertension, multimorbidity and polypharmacy. The variables associated to the prescription of NSAIDs were: uncontrolled hypertension, multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Objetivos: Investigar el efecto del posacondicionamiento isquémico remoto (PAIR) en la función del ventrículo izquierdo durante la intervención coronaria percutánea primaria (ICPP) en pacientes con IAMCEST. Material y métodos: Estudio de intervención pre y posprueba con un total de 60 pacientes con IAMCEST. Los pacientes fueron divididos en dos grupos: con y sin PAIR. Resultados: En el seguimiento de seis meses se observó una diferencia significativa en la fracción de eyección del ventrículo izquierdo en pacientes con ICPP, la cual fue mayor en el grupo con PAIR en comparación con el grupo sin PAIR: 1.0 (−1.0 a 4.3) versus −1.0 (−4.0 a –1.3), p = 0.033. En la medición de seis meses, el volumen sistólico final del ventrículo izquierdo en los pacientes sin PAIR fue mayor en comparación con el grupo homólogo: 79.3 ± 30.5 mL versus 64.4 ± 21.4 mL, p = 0.032.
