We investigated two configurations of microchip lasers (Nd:YVO/sub 4/ and Nd:YAG @ 1064 nm) with 808 nm pumping. The pump-induced tunability of microchip lasers was found to be on the level of tens MHz/mW. The offset frequency between two microchip lasers could be stabilised for hours applying only /spl plusmn/5%-changes of pumping power. The electronic buffering and add/drop unit allows random memory access, variable packet length, and aggregation/segregation of low bit rate streams. The design is scalable to a large number of wavelengths, and employs contention resolution by using the wavelength dimension combined with electronic buffering. The number of buffer inputs, i.e. the number of optoelectronic conversions, is minimized. The packet loss and delay performance when using fixed packet length and electronic buffering are investigated by simulation. If the link utilization is moderate, the buffering requirements becomes minimal. If number of wavelengths in the link is increased, the number of buffer inputs can be reduced. These new structures are radially-symmetric microstructured fibers having a high-index core (silica in our case) surrounded by a cylindrical multilayer omnidirectional mirror as cladding, which is formed by a set of alternating layers of silica and a lower refractive-index dielectric. The interplay between the unusual geometric dispersion behavior shown by the multilayered cladding of the fiber and the material dispersion corresponding to the silica core allows us to establish a procedure to design flattened dispersion profiles. In this work we focus our attention on achromatic flattened dispersion fibers in the 0.8 /spl mu/m wavelength window and even on ultraflattened structures about the 1.5 /spl mu/m interval. An algorithm for the dimensioning of the necessary network resources for realizations of this random process is presented and discussed. In the PICCO project, the approach used for lithographic pattern definition has been, so far, primarily the 'conventional' one, i.e. direct-write electron-beam lithography. Photonic crystals were fabricated by stacking two-dimensional photonic plates by micromanipulation. Accurate periodicity was maintained by using fiducial holes, which were prepared in the frame of photonic plates, and polystyrene microspheres as stoppers. With this method, up to two periods (eight layers) of woodpile structures with a periodicity of 1.4 /spl mu/m and a pile width of 0.37 /spl mu/m were fabricated. With this technique, the accurate alignment of lattice can be achieved automatically regardless of how complicated the photonic crystal structure is. Thus, this technique is suitable for fabricating complex structures. The fabricated crystals were evaluated based on their optical properties. In the measurements of transmittance, a dip appeared in the supposed wavelength region (3-5 /spl mu/m), and its intensity become stronger as the number of layers increased. In the measurements of reflectance, a peak appeared at the same wavelength.
