In this context, all-optical packet switching is emerging as the most promising technology for covering such new requirements. In this paper, we deal with the performance analysis of an optical packet switch with a feedback delay line buffer configuration. The network mode operation is slotted and the case of a realistic traffic model (i.e., variable-length packets modelled by self-similar traffic) fitted into trains of fixed-size slots is considered. Results from contention resolution performed by using both the time and the wavelength domains show that they must be exploited as combined tools in order to obtain good node performance.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Starting with the basic principle behind DCF, its need for upgrading the 1310 nm optical fiber links is discussed. The experimental and theoretical results of some researchers have been cited. The latest trend in optical communication has been to use dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems in the gain window of an optical fiber amplifier. However, nonlinear effects like four wave mixing (FWM) impose serious limitations. To overcome this difficulty use of fibers with non-zero dispersion has been suggested. For long distance repeater less transmission this dispersion will go on accumulating and will limit the number of bits one can send at each wavelength. Properly designed dispersion compensating fibers can overcome this difficulty. Already there has been some work in this direction by various researchers.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Due to the index contrast between the membrane and the surrounding air, a good confinement of light inside the membrane is obtained. The 2D PC consists of a triangular lattice of air holes drilled through the membrane. A single line waveguide is obtained by removing a row of first neighbor holes, which introduces an extended linear defect in the periodic structure responsible for the emergence of electromagnetic modes inside the gap. To study the dispersion curves and the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic modes appearing in the waveguide. 3D calculations are necessary to take into account the finite height of the membrane and the occurrence of vertical losses.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. The exotic materials under consideration are so-called backward-wave (BW) media or Veselago, media, whose both permittivity and permeability are negative, and so-called wire media with negative permittivity. Considering finite-period one-dimensional PBG structures, whose each period consists of one layer of a usual material and one layer of a BW-medium, we have found that the usage of a negative material makes it possible to dramatically widen the band gap of one-dimensional layered PBG structures. We have studied waveguiding properties of a plane two-layered waveguide, whose one layer is a usual magnetodielectric, but another one is a slab of a BW-material, and have shown a possibility of propagation of super-slow waves in such a waveguide. We demonstrated unusual dispersion properties of photonic crystals, containing wire media described by a uniaxial dyadic of permittivity having one negative component.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. In the MSE the solution of the Helmholtz's equation is presented in the special form of a single expression. As a consequence, attained liberty from the obligation of the superposition principle permits to solve both linear and nonlinear problems with the same ease. In the MSE the Helmholtz's equation is reformulated to the set of first order differential equations and the boundary problem is solved numerically. Using the MSE steady-state boundary problems are investigated for wavelength scale multilayer and modulated 1D photonic structures including loss, amplification and nonuniformity evoked by intense electromagnetic field.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. The distinctive feature of the method is a presentation of the Helmholtz's equation solution in each layer of a structure in the special form of a single expression. The electrodynamical problem of plane wave interaction with MDM Fabry-Perot structure is solved. The electric field amplitude distribution within and outside of the structure is obtained. The field localization at the resonance state is observed. Including amplification in the dielectric space between multilayer mirrors brings to the transformation of the microinterferometer's transmission peaks to the amplified ones.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat.
