Unlike WKB method, the MAF solution does not diverge at the turning points and there is no need of connection formulae. Comparison with exact results for practical wave guides show that the errors in MAF solutions are small. Use of a first order perturbation theory together with the MAF solution reduces very much the error in the eigenvalues. It has been shown that an improvement of the method gives almost exact eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. Though the method will be illustrated with examples of optical wave-guides, it is equally applicable to problems in quantum mechanics and other areas of physics and engineering.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. The dependence of switching time on the power of signal remaining on the wavelength into which the radiation is tuned, on concentration of doping elements, reflectivity of cavity output mirror and optical pump power is obtained. It is shown that additional losses because of the coupling of optical fibre and Bragg grating written on electrooptic waveguide results in reduction of the switching time, however at the same time the efficiency of laser generation also decreases.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. For instance, in the vicinity of the photonic band gap the propagation direction becomes super sensitive to the wavelength and to the angle at which the beam impinges the crystal. These superprism phenomena can be used for high resolution demultiplexing or beam steering. In addition, a very unique effect of negative refraction implying self-focusing of the beam suggests possibilities for three dimensional, real image photography. By forming defects in the crystal lattice one can \"trap\" light at wavelengths within the photonic band gap and force it to oscillate or be guided along the defects. The concept of a defect waveguide in the one-dimensional version of a photonic crystal, i.e. a multilayer Bragg reflector, is known under the name Bragg reflection waveguides since the early 70s. In 1987 it was shown that photonic band gaps and light trapping in defect waveguides are possible in all three dimensions. Photonic waveguides in twoand three dimensions allow very sharp bends without radiation loss, thus enabling ultra compact integrated circuits. In active materials emission rate and its angular spectrum can be controlled by the photonic band gap design, which can be utilized for very efficient, narrow-band and highly directional light emitting diodes, or \"zero-threshold\" lasers. Photonic crystals open possibilities for the next-generation multifunctional integrated components that provide increased functionality in about 100 times smaller footprint than offered by today's integrated optics.","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. Taking into account this, we have studied femtosecond light pulse compression in quasiperiodic nonsymmetric and symmetric Fibonacci-like structures. The theoretical analysis has shown that non-symmetric Fibonacci structures are more promising for the compressor design than periodic stacks. One of such advantages is decrease of laser pulse compression length in a quasiperiodic structure, which allows to reduce the spatial length of compression by 3-4 times (compared to periodic stacks) if the refraction index contrast is large enough (/spl Delta/n = 0.8).","PeriodicalId":126085,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat.
