It supports business type mobility and networking within Europe and with the rest of the world. It contributes to significant societal benefits. Therefore, air transport is a drive of economic growth, creator of jobs and of technological innovation, helping Europe to advance towards the Lisbon goals. It generates around 4 million jobs in Europe (direct, indirect and induced), and this number is estimated to rise by 1.5 million more by 2020. The challenge to foster the development of the air transport in balance with the related safety and environmental constraints, addresses also the proper regulation of one of its major components, the Air Navigation Services (ANS). The paper provides briefly the necessary background and business particularities of ANS and their regulation and then describes the development of a collaborative complementary way to apply sufficient, efficient and effective regulation to this natural monopoly business.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125350020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They operate 75 area control centres (ACCs). The European Commission (EC) with the Council and the European Parliament have been introducing since April 2004, regulations establishing the “Single European Sky” (SES). They liberate and regulate the market of ANS making it gradually part of the “Single Market”. Forced by regulations the currently fragmented airspace of Europe will have to be organized by 2013 in a small number of Functional Airspace Blocks (FABs). Charles Darwin observed2 that organizations under environmental constraints develop characteristics that help them to survive and even thrive. In respect, the European ANSPs are under institutional and regulative pressure to comply with a number of conditions and methods. In our hypothesis this will force the ANSPs to develop isomorphic characteristics and finally revert to collaborative schemes of operations. The paper takes stock of recent developments and performs observations of phenomena that may be preceding the formation of particular organizational isomorphic patterns leading to collaborative operating environments and systems in ANS.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115193815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, the impacts of a change can delay the whole product development project, and failed communication of changes can cause rework and scrap in production. Lean product development is one possibility to organize product development efficiently. We have conducted four case studies in heavy machinery, mechatronics and automotive industries in Finland and in Sweden to identify the current challenges in engineering change management. The challenges are categorized according to the lean product development principles they break. The results show that most challenges are related to processes and technology used in engineering change management. We suggest that implementing lean product development principles at the case companies could help in overcoming the challenges discovered.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124642205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the push or pull an idea is needed either to meet the market requirements or to translate a technology into a potential product, service or process. In reference to innovation processes this early-phase is represented as a black box. The handling of and work with ideas is quite fuzzy and unstructured in this phase. Thinking of the idea to be the first step to a successful innovation it is necessary to enhance the input quality to the subsequent steps of innovation processes. Therefore, the innovators' work within the ideation phase needs to be externalised and supported. As ideation processes become more and more spatially dislocated the interaction between innovators needs to be addressed independently of their physical locations. This paper describes the work of innovators in the early-stage of innovation and how they handle ideas in the fuzzyfront end of innovation. A framework for ideation work in business processes and an online IT toolset developed on the basis of this knowledge which supports innovators to work with ideas more efficiently and effectively in a collaborative manner is described. The toolset supports dislocated innovation workers within the generation, development and evaluation of ideas.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121115466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early supplier involvement (ESI) enables a collaborative approach. The aim of the paper is to find success factors for staying competitive in the global market by ESI and to discover the benefits and challenges in implementing ESI in the foundry industry. Moreover, we present solutions proposed by the foundry industry professionals for the found challenges. We conducted four case studies in foundries and their customers. The case studies showed that ESI has improved the development processes. Long-term commitment enables trust, which is the most important factor when implementing ESI. Our research supports previous results about the benefits of ESI, and we claim that ESI is beneficial especially for the foundry industry due to their production process type.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121160362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though, it is clear that navigating the enterprise through the complex world of strategic issues is essential. This paper deals with a holistic approach to manage the different strategic tasks to become or stay such a solution provider. In this context, an enterprise has to handle not only the development of products and services in a way to fulfil customer needs. Furthermore, issues like human resources, process management, marketing, procurement, logistic and so on have to be concerned. In the following, a systematic approach will be introduced that covers all strategic tasks under the topics of “initiation”, “positioning”, “value creation”, “change” and “performance measurement”. The additional value of this approach is the management of the interactions of these topics that leads to a holistic strategic management tool for practitioners.","PeriodicalId":124214,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117112897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
