Based on V. Domontovych’s fictionalized biography «A Lonesome Traveller Walking along a Lonesome Road» and Ralph Dutli’s novel «Soutine’s Last Journey» («Soutines letzte Fahrt»), it analyses the inter-artistic interaction of literature and painting, traces how the translation is done from the language of visual art into the language of literary work, and how the artist’s creative heritage and especially the peculiarities of his artistic technique influence the poetics of the biographical novel. Applying the methodology of intermedial analysis, it explores the ways in which art manifests itself on compositional, poetical, linguistic and stylistic levels in the novels about artists.\u0000\u0000The interaction of the verbal and fine arts is analysed at the level of thematization, construction of the artist’s image and description of the creative process. The intermediality of biographical novels about Vincent van Gogh and Chaim Soutine is considered through the transfer of features of a work of fine art into verbal art, through the employment of the main means of image creation in painting, such as colour, line, composition, etc. Based on the artistic practices of avant-garde art, the artists under analysis worked within, particular attention is paid to the identification of the poetical principles of artistic trends in the style of a literary work, that is, naturalistic and impressionist elements in Van Gogh’s biography and expressionist and surrealist elements in the novel about Soutine. In addition, the role of a pictorial quotation in the biographical fiction about the artist is worked out. A significant attention in biographical novels about artists is given to artistic detail and ekphrasis.\u0000\u0000Novels about artists provide rich material for the research of the dialogue between literature and fine arts not only for literary scholars but also for art critics.

Baum). The daily routine is skillfully combined with fairy-tale mood, it becomes possible due to the characters and the objects in these tales. The article describes the possible functions of objects in fiction, in particular, in a literary tale. The main attention is paid to the definition of functions performed by objects in the given fairy tales and the role of magic and magical objects in these works because the presence of magic objects in the text is one of the markers of fairy tales as a genre. Objects are defined as one of the important components of fairy tales. In addition to magical objects, fairy tales contain ordinary household items that perform the functions of various markers: create a background, describe the scene, characterize the characters of the epoch or place of action. An important role is played by the revival of objects, as well as the transformation of objects from ordinary to magical (a chest, book, pump, glass dog, and mannequin). Putting spells on objects is an important part of Baum's fairy tales. Revival is Baum’s favorite fairy-tale technique. In his works time, toys, mannequins, and stuffed birds come to life. This is done with the help of spells performed by wizards or gnomes. Objects in these tales serve as markers of his epoch. The author writes how and what the children played, focuses on the elements of interior design, the activities of the characters, as well as the fashion of that time. In most cases, such objects belong to the era of the author, without duplicating the folk tale tradition of magical objects. We conclude that the essence of objects in analyzed works is represented as follows: everyday objects that characterize the epoch, place of residence of the characters, daily habits; magical objects, the origin of which is not always known, and their magical power is often discovered by chance; objects that turn from ordinary to magical under the influence of magic. Thanks to the objects, a reader gets the opportunity to get additional characteristics of the characters, the idea of the world where the characters exist, and the characters’ (in) ability to use certain things influence the plot of fairy tales.

The problem of authorship in literary studies is related to the question of approaches to textual research: should we pay attention to the author’s personality, what place does the author occupy in the author-text-reader relationship, and is it possible to completely abandon the author in favour of the reader or the text? The subject of the study is the concept of “author” in literature in the context of the historical development of the phenomenon of authorship. The purpose of the study is an attempt to comprehensively analyse the phenomenon of authorship, its evolution, and to compare different theories and approaches to the study of literary authorship. Anglo-American literary critics (E. Bennett, S. Burke, and J. Frow), considering the issue of authorship, include in their searches the early epochs – Antiquity and the Middle Ages, where there were proto-models of authorship. The figure of the author as an independent creator whose ideas are presented in his literary work wereconsolidated in the Modern period. This was facilitated, in particular, by the invention of printing and copyright. In Romanticism, the concept of “author” is more developed. Here, the author appears as a carrier of original ideas, and the literary work is a real reflection of his thoughts and inspiration. The development of modernism is undergoing dramatic changes. In the twentieth century, representatives of the formal school of literary criticism, the new criticism, determined that a work cannot be explained solely by the author’s personality. Besides, the focus was on the text and later on the reader. The works of R. Barth and M. Foucault reached their apogee without author-centered approach in the 1960s. At the end of the century, literary critics resumed an active discussion about the place of the author, considering the “death of the author” to be too radical. The study uses the historical method to trace the evolution of the phenomenon of authorship, the comparative method to help establish logical connections between different theories, and the method of analysis. In the course of the study, the author identifies the periods of development of authorship and the specific features inherent in each of them. In particular, the author identifies the characteristic features of authorship in the ancient era, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. An important element of the work is the establishment of relationships between different theories of authorship in the twentieth century, where there is a struggle with traditional ideas about the author. Based on the research of S. Burke, it is determined that the transition from author to text and reader was carried out gradually during the first half of the twentieth century. The “death of the author” was the result of the work of many literary scho

The epistolary heritage was chosen as the object, as it is a grateful material for the study of the author as a real person without the admixture of interpretations of the recipients. A similar study is on time also because Lesya Ukrainka's published letters without Soviet banknotes are involved.\u0000\u0000Anthropological literary studies has been chosen as the main literary approach. This vector of exploration was determined by the reasoning of the well-known forester L. Skupeyko, who noted that modern science needs research on the concept of the author's personality. The study of the state of development of the problem has shown that science has occasional concluding statements, but there is no intelligence that would be the basis for such a study.\u0000\u0000Working with epistolary required special objectivity. M. Kotsyubynska's warnings about such treatment of letters were identified as the basis and important for compliance. To outline the content of the concepts of "responsibility" and "vocation" was chosen the latest study E. Mulyachuk. Thus, in order to determine one's own mission - life strategy - it is extremely important to be aware of one's own self-determination, to be ready to resist everyday life, and to give preference to the interests of others.\u0000\u0000Lesia Ukrainka's epistolary legacy gives grounds to say that it is important for a writer to have the inner strength to overcome her own misfortune in order to realize her own life strategy. This will help to overcome the fear of living. In addition, the awareness of the professional vocation must be in harmony with life goals. According to Lesia Ukrainka, the professional mission should be realized through a number of specific actions: publishing translations, forming a library, etc. In the future, it is advisable to continue the study of epistolary heritage, as well as to study the life strategies of the main characters of the writer's works. In this way, we will approach the creation of the concept of the personality of Lesya Ukrainka's work.

The philological,\u0000the elements of the formal (the definition of genre dominant) and the comparative methods are\u0000used (comparison with the genre matrix of whimsical prose and the whimsical V. Miniailo’s creativity in the context\u0000of social realism, which is out of present-day literary researches. In the dilogy the psychological dominant\u0000is represented. The author focuses on the evolution of characters (rather than the events) and on their\u0000emotional reactions to circumstances. The tragic pathos (which is impossible for the genre matrix\u0000of whimsical prose) plays an important role in the dilogy. These features point to a socio-psychological\u0000narrative strategy (combined with a lyrical-romantic and philosophical-existential motives) as a genre\u0000dominant of the observed book. The Miniailo’s novel “Eternal Ivan” (1994) is also devoted to the events\u0000of the 1920s in the Ukrainian village, but conventionality, grotesque, parochialism and satire make\u0000it whimsical. We primarily deal with the poesy of the Sicilian school and the Dolce Stil Nuovo (‘sweet new style’). The interest of literary criticism in the historical and cultural background of influential literary phenomena, which have not lost their relevance, is defined by the need for reinterpreting them in new paradigms. The methods of cultural, historical, biographical, hermeneutic, and comparative analyses as well as the method of generalisation have been exploited for this research. The European poetic tradition has passed a long way in searching for new forms and means of the artistic representation of reality. The emergence of the Sicilian School on the Apennine Peninsula in the 13th century became the initial stage of the literary and linguistic history of the Old World. It marked the beginning of Italian poesy the development of the Dolce Stil Nuovo and was largely the forerunner of Dante’s and Petrarch’s poems, laying the foundations of the philosophy of lyric poetry. The Sicilians gave a powerful impetus to the further development of poetic theory, images, and themes, which would be pivotal in stilnovismo, as well as to the assimilation of many authors of the Renaissance in Europe. The appeal to certain themes and motives as well as their transformation highlighted the idea of Sicilian authors about poetry as a specific kind of philosophy. We emphasise that the time of origination and a highly cultured environment have caused the refinement of art forms and stylistic devices for revealing the conceptual content of such verses. Giacomo da Lentini reconceptualised the approaches to rhyming and poetising, and most importantly — to the psychological perception of reality and understanding of love in the metaphysical dimension. The ideological and aesthetic unity of the poets of the Dolce Stil Nuovo, who developed the innovations of da Lentini, made it possible to relate them with the writers of the early Renaissance. The article also focuses on the specifics of literary activity during the expansion of new European poetry leading to the invention of a sonnet as the poetic form that follows a particular rhyming pattern.

In particular, the apocalyptic motifs have been investigated, because the biblical legend about the imminent arrival of the apocalypse is one of the most famous and, probably, the most popular in society. The prophecies about the end of the world get attention every time during major wars, terrible world catastrophes, great social upheavals etc. The First World War, which was the first upheaval of such a scale in the 20th century, was one such event. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that, despite the existing studies devoted to Ukrainian works about the First World War, the texts of combatant writers were not analysed for apocalyptic imagery. The subjects of the study were the works of K. Polishchuk, O. Makovei, and O. Turianskyi. It is argued that the motives of hopelessness, despair and misunderstanding, for what and for what interests ordinary soldiers are fighting, have been were common to all writers. They perceive the war as the end of the world. The leading problems of the works of these writers are the general dehumanization of society, which allowed a bloody slaughter, and the deviation of an individual personality, which is broken by a traumatic war experience. The images that represent individual characters of the apocalyptic myth in the analysed works can be transformed into a dragon, a fury or an angel of death. Their purpose is the destruction of the world. And, therefore, each person can make a choice about what his life will be. This optimism is not preserved in the analysed texts of K. Polishchuk and O. Makovei. Their works are characterised by absolute pessimism. Humanity is not capable of a positive choice, it is doomed, because it constantly prefers the death instinct, according to Z. Freud. On the other hand, in O. Turyanskyi’s novel, man and humanity do win over the terrible dehumanizing reality. And the world still has hope for further revival.
