We do it by using a set of standard components and a consistent and standardized interface throughout: for the library components, for the designs themselves, and for the testbenches. It is possible to get designs working quickly because the control is implicit and the synthesis scripts are standardised, even though the projects covered a range from radix 4 multiplication and division, memory interleaver, a synchrotron controller, and parts for a 3 dimensional graphics engine. This pilot project is intended to enhance the design and practical experiences of undergraduate engineering students by combining the resources of the Electrical Engineering Department, the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department, and the Center for Electronic Design, Communications, and Computing (CEDCC). The EE Department curriculum and laboratories support electronic circuit design and microelectronic processing, while the IE Department has significant expertise and laboratory facilities in printed circuit board assembly with a strong emphasis on surface mount technology processes. This panel was formed as part of a NSF Course and Curriculum Development (CCD) grant to help define the appropriate mix between specific skills, fundamentals, and exposure to current technology. Their input calls for curricula with broader coverage of the entire design cycle from concept to manufacturing. The panel lists specific concepts that are increasingly important for today's chip designers and manufacturers, as well as timeless fundamentals that must continue to be emphasized in undergraduate programs. This is due to its flexibility, ease of use, and cost (free via ftp). Magic has been ported to many platforms, including the MAC-II and DOS, but mainly Unix-based platforms. The DOS version was limited and not widely used. With the proliferation of Windows 95/NT platforms, it seems only natural that Magic be ported to Windows 95/NT. Yet, there does not appear to be a port to Windows 95/NT available. The reason for this appears to be the difficulty of programming \"windows\" in this environment. We believe that we have a way around this difficulty. Development is currently underway to port Magic to Windows 95/NT using Tcl and the Tk Toolkit. This should ease the interface to the window system through \"generic\" routines. This paper presents the experience of supervising and managing diverse projects in the advanced VLSIC analog/digital systems design graduate course at the Microelectronics System Design Lab (MSDL), Oakland University. Another pronounced benefit in assigning multiple projects is linking students to ongoing research efforts at the MSDL. Some of the completed one-term projects are directly connected to industrial applications. Other projects contributed to the effort of building apt analog standard cells library. All projects have been implemented through the MOSIS facilities.
