It also reviews the legends, miracle stories and devotional practices that developed around the site and discusses these within the context of the pilgrims’ experience during their voyage to the Holy Land. The article argues that in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the visit to the church of Cassiope marked the first contact between western pilgrims and the Greek rite and the first instance of shared worship during their pilgrimage.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126353063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are more adequately described by such terms as “convergence,” “cohabitation,” “contested sacred place,” “interfaith crossover.” Future studies would benefit from the evolution of an analytical vocabulary consisting of components such as: the confessional ownership of the sacred space; the religious reasons for its veneration; the direction of interfaith crossovers; the nature of the act performed by adherents of different religions; the social standing and motivation of these adherents; the existence of a developmental trajectory.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133416604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fact poses considerable difficulties for the historiographical assessment of this period. Recently brought to scholarly attention, a Shīʿī Arabic account has been presented in previous scholarship as a counter-narrative to Byzantine historians’ portrayal of the period of interest. The present study sets out to, first, re-appraise, in the light of fresh historical testimonies, the extent of Byzantine records’ affinities with this “ignored Arabic account” and second, to gauge whether this Arabic evidence can be an aid in filling the historiographical lacuna created by the Byzantine chroniclers’ and hagiographers’ one-sided depiction of the late Amorian period. The latter aim will be pursued via analysis of the rival representations of a traumatic event which happened during Bardas’s rule, namely the earthquake of Constantinople.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"06 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127371489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The later chapters go on to discuss the abbey’s administration, lordship, and its treatment of its peasants. The second section concludes with a discussion of Cava’s role within the regional economy. This detailed discussion includes many points of interest. These include the abbey’s evolving relationship with Salerno’s Jewish community, which suffered increasing pressure and persecution especially under Angevin rule in the late thirteenth century. Loud also stresses Cava’s role in the regional economy. As he demonstrates, the abbey pursued several economic roles: providing a secure depository where local elites could safeguard their property, acting as a creditor (an unusual role for a monastic institution), involving itself in trade with locations as distant as North Africa and the Kingdom of Jerusalem as well as more local commerce in Salerno. As a landowner it typically relied upon long-term leases rather than farming estates through its own personnel. Loud concludes his work with an appeal for further research into the Cava archive which clearly has a great deal more to offer. He also suggests that more could be learned from comparative studies – placing Cava side-by-side with other regional landowners. Certainly, the idea of conducting comparative local analyses makes a great deal of sense but this might also work on an international scale. Cava’s fluctuating fortunes, whilst very different in local context and experience from many other monastic houses, orders and networks in this period, nonetheless maps out a very common trajectory. Many other houses picked up substantial momentum in the eleventh and early twelfth centuries; reached their peak in the late-twelfth or early thirteenth centuries and then found themselves increasingly embattled thereafter. Exceptions could be found of course (mostly obviously the mendicants) and yet Cava’s experience was not unique and perhaps another zone for future research might be the influence of far broader macro social and cultural changes sweeping the Catholic world in shaping the abbey’s fortunes. Taken overall, The Social World of the Abbey of Cava represents a deeply impressive piece of work offering a nuanced and multi-faceted reconstruction of a fascinating monastic institution.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129170623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As mentioned in its incipit, the scope of the booklet, entitled al-Isfār ʽan ḥukm al-asfār, was to accompany al-Bārizī in the pilgrimage to Mecca and provide him with the medical information necessary to keep healthy and cure sickness during the journey. By analysing the structure and contents of the unedited manuscript of this “provision for travellers”, this article discusses how Ibn al-Amshāṭī, mostly engaged with scholarly works, collected, organized and adapted scientific knowledge in a booklet for a non-professional readership. By looking into this process of knowledge transmission and adaptation, this article seeks to contribute to the re-evaluation of Mamlūk literary heritage.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125007336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The papacy’s conception of sacred space was one-dimensional, confrontational, and Eurocentric, promoting the idea of a binary conflict between Christians and Muslims and airbrushed diverse Eastern Christian communities to create a homogenous group. The themes of invasion and occupation of Christian holy sites by Muslims, and Islamic mockery and defilement of them, are staples of the genre, even when the holy places were in Frankish possession. However, through close comparison of the crusade calls, one can also trace subtler shifts in specific elements of the encyclical letters in response to the changing military and political context in the Levant and new devotional trends in the West.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121650192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
