This change has typically been attributed to the growth of the papacy’s political agenda. This article provides a more detailed examination of the language used by the popes and their supporters. The results of this study reveal that papal condemnations of the Hohenstaufen during this period were based on established descriptions of Islamic enemies of the crusades in the Levant, now applied to the papacy’s Christian enemies in Italy. More specifically, this language reflects the dissemination of a particular typology of crusading enemy contained in the intercessory crusading rituals promoted by the papacy during this period. The presence of this rhetoric reveals the important role these rituals played in establishing a devotional framework that supported the expansion of the crusading movement to new theatres and enemies.","PeriodicalId":112464,"journal":{"name":"Al-Masāq","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122022922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though in the past five years, publications focusing on the Islamicate Western Mediterranean have become more common, Yale University Press is to be commended for their support of a project that Bloom writes he has mulled over for the past 45 years. Bloom’s authority as a scholar of Islamic art, his collection of photographs, his access to sites, and his expertise in mosque architecture come together in this work to offer a much-needed addition to the field of Islamic Art. Architecture of the Islamic West, with its stunning glossy photographs (many of which were taken by Bloom) and plans drawn by Nicholas Warner, offers a tantalising glimpse into the richness of the buildings of the Western Mediterranean, leaving the reader hungry for morein short this volume serves as the perfect amuse-bouche for the non-specialist, and a welcome contribution for specialists in need of a competent, survey text to introduce Islamicate architecture of North Africa and alAndalus to new students. While other scholars have provided apt chapter-by-chapter summaries of Architecture of the Islamic West, it is worth zooming out to look at the narrative arc of the book.
