However, awareness of the possibility of death seems to have prevailed. In existential psychology and philosophy, awareness of death is a universal condition in life, and facing the anxiety this awareness might invoke has the potential of being life-invigorating. In a hermeneutic analysis of Qualitative data, generated in a study on new parents' existential meaning-making, this study aimed to explore awareness of death as experienced in parenthood transition. The results found two overarching themes: Awareness of my own Finitude and Fragility of our loved ones. These were interpreted in existential philosophical and psychological theories, and concludes that awareness of death might signify an existential integration of 'self' in the new role of parenthood. Acknowledging these thoughts as healthcare professionals could support the meaning-making of parenthood transition, by normalizing their universal nature.
","PeriodicalId":11041,"journal":{"name":"Death Studies","volume":" ","pages":"807-815"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141237521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It accentuated the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual vulnerabilities of patients approaching death. This study explored the lived experience of palliative inpatients during the pandemic. We conducted interviews with 22 palliative inpatients registered in a Canadian urban palliative care program, aimed to uncover how the pandemic impacted participants' experiences of approaching end-of-life. The reflexive thematic analysis revealed 6 themes: putting off going into hospital, the influence of the pandemic on hospital experience, maintaining dignity in care, emotional impact of nearing death, making sense of end-of-life circumstances and coping with end-of-life. Findings highlight the vulnerability of patients approaching death, and how that was accentuated during the pandemic. Findings reveal how the pandemic strained, threatened, and undermined human connectedness. These lived experiences of palliative inpatients offer guidance for future pandemic planning and strategies for providing optimal palliative care.
","PeriodicalId":11041,"journal":{"name":"Death Studies","volume":" ","pages":"699-713"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141476156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since loneliness is one of the most pronounced challenges for bereaved individuals, we investigated grief-specific social expectations and its association with loneliness and grief severity. Initially, we developed an Inventory of Social Expectations in Bereavement (ISEB). Its factorial and psychometric validity was then tested in a bereaved sample (N = 344; 28.3 ± 11.1 years; 74.4% female). A two-factor solution for the scale fit the data best (factor 1: \"relationship to others,\" factor 2: \"relationship to the deceased\") and demonstrated good psychometric validity. Higher ISEB-levels were associated with higher levels in grief severity and loneliness. The results suggest that individual social expectations affect the experience of loneliness after the loss of a significant other. The ISEB assesses these expectations time-efficiently and provides a basis for therapeutic interventions. Expressing expectations as probabilistic beliefs about the future renders them amenable for corrective experiences in clinical practice.
","PeriodicalId":11041,"journal":{"name":"Death Studies","volume":" ","pages":"238-248"},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139995890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We searched seven international electronic databases. Five studies were selected and critically appraised. Thematic analysis was employed. Five themes (with 13 subthemes) were derived: suffering sudden changes and are severely impacted, multiple feelings and needs of waiting, final farewell, personal and family difficulties after leaving the ED, and journey through grief. Participants (N = 604) were randomly exposed to a podcast about ACP containing clean humor, profane humor, or no humor. Results indicated that profanity and perceived humor were positively related to offensiveness, and offensiveness was negatively related to perceived speaker and message effectiveness. When perceived as non-offensive, perceived humor was positively related to perceived speaker and message effectiveness.
