While the first two represent the age-old role of university professors, the last, service, is a relatively new phenomenon. Near the beginning of the 19th century, Prussia introduced the notion that the state should provide formally for the education of primary school teachers. In the teachers seminaries the future Prussian schoolmasters received a form of secondary education coupled with pedagogy and practice teaching. Despite some hankering to go on to university studies, the prospective teachers were confined to teaching the children of the working classes. The teachers seminaries inspired the French ecole normale; the model was brought to the United States by Horace Mann in the 1830s. By the end of the century American colleges and universities offered teacher preparation programs for the elementary and secondary level.","PeriodicalId":104526,"journal":{"name":"Western European Education","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123620182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fair enough. Upon closer inspection of Swedish education in our time, one finds that since the end of World War II the nation has engaged in a continuous, systematic quest to make its educational system more egalitarian and to adjust it to the demands of a modern, industrialized nation determined to do its utmost to contribute to the search for peace. Having been a so-called neutral nation in World War II, Sweden was ready earlier than other European nations to initiate reforms aimed at opening up the educational system to many more youth.","PeriodicalId":104526,"journal":{"name":"Western European Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130233666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
