Neglecting values in computing systems can result in a system that does not make sense to users, that does not serve stakeholders, and that can trigger undesirable impacts, difficult to predict and reverse, in the context in which it is used. This situation is even more critical for widely used systems, such as Online Social Networks (OSN). This paper presents a value-oriented method for the evaluation of OSN. The method is based on Organizational Semiotics and inspired by the heuristic evaluation. The method was evaluated by representatives from its target audience and results were positive about its ease and usefulness of use, showing potential to contribute to discussions and practices on human values in HCI.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122399715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Brazil, WhatsApp has been pointed out as one of the main vehicles for disseminating false information, reaching millions of people all across the country. This paper presents an evaluation on WhatsApp with a values-oriented approach to investigate what aspects of this platform contributed to the false information spread in Brazil. The evaluation was conducted with 6 WhatsApp heavy users in a 2-hour session, identifying 16 different problems. Results revealed aspects of the technical infrastructure and user interface that influence the way different stakeholders can use the tool to promote false information. Finally, the paper presents prospective paths for improvements on the platform and possible ways to deal with the identified problems.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130770365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our question is: how the information systems and the human-computer interaction fields can help to improve the human behavior towards the consumption of healthy food for wellbeing? This paper searches for answers to this question with a case study in which we attempt to motivate and persuade people to eat healthy food by using an information system and, on the other hand, influence owners of restaurants to offer more healthy food. In this work we present a persuasive information system, designed using the Persuasive OpenDesign framework (a socially aware platform for open design) and discuss preliminary results of using it. We conclude this paper with future lines of work on this subject.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116681847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While some studies focus on adapting game elements according to demographic and behavioural information of the user profile, few of them explore (or even consider) cultural factors. These cultural factors play an essential role in our societies' development. Thus, this work proposes and evaluates a representative model to understand better the relationship between cultural factors and gamification within educational domains, namely the Gamification for Cultural Studies Model (GamiCSM). Through a qualitative approach, we map Hofstede's cultural dimensions (i.e., power distance, individualism/collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, long/short-term orientation, and indulgence/restraint) with a Taxonomy of Gamification Elements for Education (TGEEE), a recent model for gamification elements for educational environments. Furthermore, we adapted a survey to evaluate the resultant model with eight domain experts in gamification and education. Based on this evaluation, we are able to propose a starting model, containing some additional refinements and improvements. Thus, the main contributions of this work are: (i) the first model to relate game elements and cultural dimensions within educational domains and (ii) a state-of-the-art empirical study intersecting culture, gamification and education.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115440558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Open Design, the diversity of activities, design objects and participants involved implies in a rich context for Consolidation practice, but a challenging one in terms of features to support it. This paper presents a Conceptual Scheme created to help understanding and identifying Consolidation requirements for Open Design settings. The Scheme was evaluated with eight Open Design professionals in an exploratory case study, resulting in 49 requirements for an Open Design platform under development. In a Focus Group, professionals discussed the Scheme usage, its positive points and opportunities for improvements. Results suggest the Scheme was relevant for the professionals to understand Consolidation as a defined, comprehensive and applicable process in an Open Design context, and was useful to guide them from understanding Consolidation to identifying requirements to support it in a technical system.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115678391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when courses have a higher number of students, there can be a work overload on human tutors, impacting their work quality. To mitigate this problem, artificial smart tutors can be used not only to increase the capacity to meet students' needs but also to improve the monitoring of their performance. Increasing the scalability of online courses can be achieved using an intelligent artificial tutor. Goal: Analyze the viability of an intelligent tutor in meeting the main tutoring demands made by students on Dell Accessible Learning platform. Method: We developed an artifact called STUART that monitors DAL and interacts with students, providing automation, intelligence, and support to the teaching and learning process. We programmed STUART to meet reactively and proactively students' main demands, based on the corpus of interactions scenarios on previous courses. Fourteen participants attended two classes of a Distance Education Course, with and without STUART, where interaction data were collected. Results: For 76% of the participants, STUART helped solve the more frequent problems in the pedagogical, technical, and content levels. There was an average reduction of 87% in the requests for a human tutor and a reduction of 27% in the time needed to finish tasks. That resulted in the preference of STUART compared to the human tutor for 85% of the students. SUS (usability assessment) scored 86.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128363394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the technology evolution in different contexts has not imposed limits on user-product interactions. For instance, in immersive technologies, the goal is to create a sense of immersion for the user, to the point that the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds are blurred. There are entertainment applications for large events in that context, whose goal is to transform the audience's role from a mere spectator to an active element of the show. Thus, one of UX's most important dimensions in this context is user engagement (UE). In this work, we propose two metrics to investigate engagement through the automated analysis of logs, which are records that contain the data of the users' immersive interaction. We carried out two studies with two applications that actively engage the user in different experiences. The results showed the feasibility of using the metrics in log files, enabling both the automatic evaluation of UX and engagement understanding.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"10 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113938752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such systems are flexible and can be easily reconfigured, there are few restrictions on their creation. In this context, this paper is based on techniques from the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) to propose a list of decisions to be taken into account when creating a DMI, observing its gains and losses, in order to find a common point for the building of this equipment.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130238541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The understanding of elements related to games is a challenge, especially empathic games, i.e., those that foster users' empathy. This category of games makes users think over delicate and moving themes. This study aims at human interpretations of different sorts of data from discussion forums on empathic games. To do so, we considered ratings of user comments analyzed in previous research with two games, \"That Dragon, Cancer\" and \"Valiant Heart\", and we used an analysis tool. The data patterns allowed theories to emerge, and also allowed us to analyze users' profiles and comments, by reorganizing the previously proposed categories, but now based on assumptions of Grounded Theory. The methodological path points out ways in which the interpretation of the data proved to be useful for the future development of a conceptual framework for creating and evaluating this kind of game.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133824941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, considering privacy in design time might be a good way to address these concerns. In this context, the Privacy Design Model (PDM) aims to support OSN designers to reflect about privacy de-sign aspects. In this study, PDM is applied to analyze the privacy in WhatsApp. Our results points to relevant aspects regarding privacy in instant messages OSNs, but wich are not (well) covered in PDM dimensions. Thus, we identified the need to a further investigation about PDM expressiveness and a possible model review.","PeriodicalId":102113,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127475944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
