The article focuses on three possible ways of introducing foreign readers to Polish literature: by discussing texts that were originally written by Polish (and bilingual) authors in “ major ” languages, by interpreting world-lit-erature texts that are intertextually connected with Polish ones and/or their authors, and by the comparative analysis of translations that have been produced by different translators of Polish literature working in different parts of the world. “ Minor ” -literature strategies are connected with the need to adopt widely read languages, which is often driven by mechanisms of the World Republic of Letters as described by Pascale Casanova. When “ minor ” literary authors/works estab-lish themselves internationally, they enter other literatures and produce intercultural intertextuality. Translations play a crucial role in the above-mentioned pro-cesses, and they can serve as tools for comprehensive understanding and interpretation, which will also be explored in depth in order to add a currently missing element to our knowledge of what European literature is, and how particular European literatures contribute to it.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126148734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Angesichts der Unterschiede zwischen beiden Sprachen bringt der Vergleich der französischen und englischen Übersetzungen verschiedene Strategien zur Geltung: Die französischen heideggerianischen „Jünger der Wörtlichkeit“ versuchen, die chaotische Sprache des Dichters und so dessen subtile Philosophie wiederzugeben. Allerdings weisen ihre Übersetzungen hier und da Inkorrektheiten auf, die der deutsche Text nicht beinhaltet. Die dem Deutschen näher stehende englische Sprache wiederum erlaubt es den Übersetzern, Hölderlins Syntax und Verse getreuer wiederzugeben. Ansonsten eint die französischsprachigen schweizerischen Übersetzer, die sich von den „Jüngern der Wörtlichkeit“ durch die Wahl einer schlichteren und korrekteren Sprache unterscheiden und dadurch eine angenehmere Übersetzung liefern, und die englischen Dichter eine gemeinsame Tendenz, die esoterisch anmutenden Verse Hölderlins pädagogisch zu explizieren und so die verzwickte Pindarsche Sprache zu lockern. Schließlich bevorzugen die schweizerischen und englischen Übersetzer-Dichter eine fruchtbringende Nachdichtung, die eine gewisse Osmose zwischen dem übersetzten Werk und dem Werk des übersetzenden Dichters erahnen lässt.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126966561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prosification began at least in the Middle Ages, and it has acquired an ir-repressible momentum in Western literatures since the eighteenth century with the emergence of the modern notion of literature and the ever-increasing propor-tion of narrative fiction in the corpus. Nevertheless, it is largely ignored by literary historians and theorists, except in the case of the “ prose poem. ” After establishing essential working definitions of the notions involved, and evoking some historical examples of interlingual prosification and versification (particularly French translations of Paradise Lost ), this article proposes to develop a systematic approach to intralingual versification and prosification as translational phenomena that dis-play a similar productivity and betray the same aporetic limits as interlingual translation. They often reveal deep trends in the concepts of language, form, and representation that prevail in a particular literary culture.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127005821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through various archival materials from the Tolstoy museums in Moscow and at Yasnaya Polyana, the paper traces Constance Garnett’s thorough and hard work, and her communication and collaboration with Leo Tolstoy. The article also gives a picture of how The Kingdom of God Is within You was published and reviewed in England and in the US. There are some contradictions concerning where the meeting between Leo Tolstoy and Constance Garnett during her visit to Russia in 1894 took place. According to archival materials and Tatiana Tolstoy’s diary, her only meeting with Tolstoy took place on 12/24 January, and it was in Moscow, not at Yasnaya Polyana as some critics say. The article points out the growth of interest in Tolstoy in England in the last decades of his life.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122432670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, we consider that digital literatures are a very useful workbench for exploring the consequences of global digital circulation as a factual process but also as an imaginary storytelling. Literatures born digital can show how rituals of reading, formulas of production, and narratives are being modified in the twenty-first century. This article traverses a very large and diverse domain: digital literatures circulating in Spanish all over the world, not just those created in Spanish-speaking countries. The starting point is Ciberia, a repository of digital literature in Spanish, but other digital collections such as LitElat, IloveE-Poetry, Hermeneia, ELMCIP, and ELO are also covered. The authors use a post-Bourdieu methodology to study circulating digital literatures in Spanish as an emerging and dynamic field. By doing so, they show how these literatures give birth to new communities of reader-writers, reading differently and perhaps announcing how readers from the new generation are going to read.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128751637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The remarkable fact is that they presented to the Polish reader medieval epic stories, previously unknown in Poland, and became favourite reading for many generations. However, the matière de Bretagne came to Poland through the medium of German translations from French; only the fourth narrative, the anonymous Fortunatus , is of German origin. These fantastic adventures appealed to Polish readers, who found in them not only popular European motifs but also first attempts at prose fiction, which enables the discussion of cultural systems and values. While the first three novels represent the values of chivalric culture, Fortunatus aimed to describe the contemporary world and its rules. It is notable that these Polish prose narratives anticipated the development of the novel in the seventeenth century: the first modern novel, Don Quixote by Cervantes, in the form of a parody of medieval romances, questions the values of the bygone chivalric code. These sixteenth-cen-tury Polish narratives, translated from German, perform a similar function.","PeriodicalId":101944,"journal":{"name":"Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125589037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
