We undertook to assess HIV/AIDS related knowledge and sexual behaviour among secondary school students in Benin City. Methods: In a cross-sectional study using a 59-item selfadministered \u0000questionnaire, a survey was carried out among \u00001917 students (48.7% male and 51.3% female; age: 11-24 years) systematically selected from 13 secondary schools in Benin City to assess HIV/AID related knowledge and sexual behaviour. Results: Awareness of HIV/AIDS was high. Misconceptions about the cause and spread was very high (91.4% and 93.1% of respondents, respectively). The knowledge on prevention was poor as only 40.4% of the respondents knew how to avoid contacting HIV/AIDS. While 9.1% of the students indicated ever having sex (with 67.4% of them using condom before sex), only 2.4% engaged in commercial sex. \u0000Some of the males (4.2%) are homosexuals. As many as \u00005.8% of the youths (and 12.4% of those who had done HIV test in the preceding 12 months) were HIV positive. \u0000Conclusion: Despite the various educational efforts to address the problems of HIV/AIDS, the knowledge of secondary school students in Benin City is still poor and the adolescents still engage in risky behavours. This calls for educational intervention that will impact in-depth knowledge about HIV/ AIDS among the youths who are at the center of HIV/AIDS pandemic. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: HIV/AIDS knowledge, risky sexual behaviour, \u0000questionnaire survey, secondary schools, Benin City

Methods: In a controlled study, sleep deprivation was induced in 10 \u0000groups of mice (6 in each group) for 72 hr by using grid suspended over water method. Trazodone (5 and 10 mg/kg, ip), L-arginine (50 mg/kg, ip), L-NAME (10 mg/kg, ip) and methylene blue (10 mg/kg, i.p) were administered for 5 days, 2 days prior to the 72 hr sleep deprivation. Various behavioral tests (plus maze, zero maze, mirror \u0000chamber, actophotometer) followed by oxidative stress parameters (malondialdehyde level, reduced glutathione, catalase, nitrite and protein) were assessed in the animals. Results: The trazodone treatment significantly indcued anti-anxiety like effect, improved locomotor activity and antioxidant effect as indicated by reduced lipid peroxidation, nitrite concentration and restoration of depleted reduced glutathione and catalase activity. \u0000Further, prior treatment of the animals with L-NAME and methylene blue potentiated the protective effect of trazodone (5 mg/kg) (p<0.05). However, L-arginine combined with trazodone (5mg/kg) reversed the protective effect of trazodone (p<0.05). Conclusion: Results of present study suggest that NO modulation \u0000is involved in the protective effect of trazodone against sleep deprivation-induced anxiety like behavior and oxidative damage in mice. \u0000 \u0000Keywords: Anxiety, locomotor activity, oxidative stress, sleep deprivation, trazodone, L-arginine, L-NAME, methylene blue.

Phytochemical screening was carried out according to standard procedures. Free radical scavenging activity was determined by measuring the decrease in the visible absorbance of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) on addition of the plant extract. The mean inhibitory concentration (IC50), which is the \u0000concentration of extract needed to decrease the initial absorbance of DPPH by 50% was determined graphically. Total phenolic, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin contents were determined by spectrophotometric methods. \u0000Results: Alkaloids, anthraquinones, tannins, saponins, steroids, \u0000terpenoids, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides were found to be \u0000present in both the fruits and leaves. Only AF fruit contained \u0000phlobatannins. IC50 values of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.1 mg/ml were \u0000recorded for Vitamin E, AF leaves and AF fruits respectively. Through the complexation of HP-β-CD, it is possible to enhance the water solubility and hence the drug bioavailability after oral administration. The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of pH and concentration of HP-β-CD on the solubility of gliclazide as it shows pH dependent solubility and stability. \u0000Method: The equilibrium solubility of gliclazide in a series of \u0000solutions of varying pH (from 1.2 to 11) was determined and \u0000compared with the equilibrium solubility of gliclazide in the \u0000presence of 20% HP- β-CD at same pH values. \u0000Result: As the pH increases from 9.2 to 11 its solubility \u0000relatively constant (3.5 μg/ml ± 0.5). Addition of 20% HP-\u0001-CD \u0000increased the solubility to about 9 times at pH 1.2 and 4; 15 \u0000times at pH 6.8; 40 times at pH 7.4; 58 times at pH 9.2 and 67 \u0000times at pH 11. It was observed that solubility of protonated \u0000form is more than neutral molecule. HP-β-CD resulted in \u0000increased solubility at all pH values. But inclusion of drug in the \u0000cavity of HP-β-CD might depend upon charged state of the \u0000molecule. \u0000Conclusion: The solubility of gliclazide can be increased either \u0000by the addition of HP-β-CD or by adding pH lowering agents. \u0000 \u0000 Keywords: pH, hydroxypropylated-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), gliclazide.
